OVERVIEW Graduates of Australian or New Zealand medical schools who have completed an internship in Australia or New Zealand are eligible to apply for General Registration through the Medical Board of Australia. The Board grants Provisional Registration to Australian or New Zealand medical school graduates to undertake the intern year in Victoria. PA2 students graduating from Victorian medical schools, whether domestic or international, have priority over any other Australian graduates. The Intern Candidate’s Guide in Victoria issued by the Post Graduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV) aims to provide new graduates with some basic information as they commence the next stage of their journey towards becoming fully qualified doctors. This can be downloaded from the PMCV website. APPLYING TO VICTORIA The application process for Victoria is through the PMCV website. Application includes submission of a Candidate Priority List, which is the list of hospitals applicants would like to be accepted into, in order of preference. There are 23 allocation preferences. In addition to this, there is a separate application process for the hospitals applicants have chosen on their priority list. PMCV has a standardised CV format. Applicants may also be required to submit a cover letter, academic results, sit a situational judgement test and list clinical and non-clinical references. The Victorian Rural Generalist program - formerly known as the Victoria’s Rural Community Intern Training (RCIT) program - is available in five rural Victorian regions. The Rural Generalist Intern program provides medical graduates the opportunity to fulfill their training in a small rural health setting facilitating a career in rural practice. Each program offers core rotations to larger hospitals and non-core rotations to GP practices or community health settings. The Victorian Rural generalist regions offered in 2020: • Barwon South West Region: Rural Generalist – South West Community Intern Program (5 positions) • Grampians region: Rural Generalist – Grampians Rural Community Intern Program (5 positions) • Loddon Mallee region: Rural Generalist – Echuca Intern Network (5 positions) • Hume region: Rural Generalist – Murray to the Mountains Program (15 positions) • Gippsland region: Rural Generalist – East Gippsland Community Based Intern Program (5 positions) All medical graduates are eligible to apply and selection is based on merit with the criteria varying between the 5 health services. Students successful in obtaining a Victorian Rural Generalist intern position are generally allocated to the training region for 12 months. Students interested in the program can apply through the PMCV computer matching website. Additionally, some final year medical students may be eligible to apply for the Victorian Rural Medical Scholarship (VRMS) scheme that offers substantial financial support to graduating medical students wishing to work in rural and regional Victoria. Successful applicants must commit two years to working in rural/ regional Victoria.
