The Victorian Rural Generalist program - formerly<br />

known as the Victoria’s Rural Community Intern<br />

Training (RCIT) program - is available in five rural<br />

Victorian regions. The Rural Generalist Intern program<br />

provides medical graduates the opportunity to fulfill<br />

their training in a small rural health setting facilitating<br />

a career in rural practice. Each program offers core<br />

rotations to larger hospitals and non-core rotations to<br />

GP practices or community health settings.<br />

The Victorian Rural generalist regions offered in <strong>2020</strong>:<br />

• Barwon South West Region: Rural Generalist<br />

– South West Community Intern Program (5<br />

positions)<br />

• Grampians region: Rural Generalist – Grampians<br />

Rural Community Intern Program (5 positions)<br />

• Loddon Mallee region: Rural Generalist – Echuca<br />

Intern Network (5 positions)<br />

• Hume region: Rural Generalist – Murray to the<br />

Mountains Program (15 positions)<br />

• Gippsland region: Rural Generalist – East Gippsland<br />

Community Based Intern Program (5 positions)<br />

All medical graduates are eligible to apply and selection<br />

is based on merit with the criteria varying between the<br />

5 health services. Students successful in obtaining a<br />

Victorian Rural Generalist intern position are generally<br />

allocated to the training region for 12 months. Students<br />

interested in the program can apply through the PMCV<br />

computer matching website.<br />

Additionally, some final year medical students may<br />

be eligible to apply for the Victorian Rural Medical<br />

Scholarship (VRMS) scheme that offers substantial<br />

financial support to graduating medical students<br />

wishing to work in rural and regional Victoria. Successful<br />

applicants must commit two years to working in rural/<br />

regional Victoria. More information can be found at:<br />
