Corporate and Commercial Development<br />

Additional work with Hides Consulting has included focus group workshops to guide the<br />

development of the six new galleries at the Maritime <strong>Museum</strong>, and a further project will be<br />

undertaken to explore potential audiences for this new museum.<br />

STATEMENT OF COMPLIANCE WITH PUBLIC SECTOR STANDARDS<br />

Employees of <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> are employees of the Director General of the<br />

Department of Culture and the Arts; however, the Chief Executive Officer of the <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australian</strong><br />

<strong>Museum</strong> has delegated authority with respect to employment.<br />

Human Resource services are provided by the Human Resource group of the Department of<br />

Culture and the Arts. Specific advice on compliance with the standards is provided for recruitment,<br />

transfer, secondment, redeployment, termination, discipline, temporary deployment and<br />

grievance resolution.<br />

Compliance checks and controls are performed regularly by the Human Resource group, and<br />

where it appears that the <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> has not complied with the standards, the<br />

situation is investigated and action taken as appropriate to the circumstances.<br />

1. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> has complied in the administration of Public Sector<br />

Standards in Human Resource Management, the Public Sector Code of Ethics and the<br />

organisation’s Code of Conduct.<br />

2. Procedures have been put in place to ensure such compliance and internal checks have<br />

been conducted to satisfy that the statement made at point 1 is correct.<br />

3. <strong>The</strong>re were no breaches of Public Sector Standards in Human Resource Management during<br />

<strong>2001</strong>–02.<br />

DISABILITY SERVICES PLAN<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> continues to implement its Disability Services Plan. Access ramps were installed<br />

in the regional museums at Albany and Kalgoorlie-Boulder and safety bollards were installed at<br />

the Perth site. An accredited disability access architect was contracted to provide advice in<br />

relation to the new Maritime <strong>Museum</strong>. This will ensure that the building meets the access<br />

provisions of the Building Code of Australia and other relevant regulations and guidelines.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> is represented on the Department of Culture and the Arts’ Disability Services<br />

Committee and uses this forum as a means of consulting with the community.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> continues to provide services and programs for children and adults with visual or<br />

auditory disabilities. Such programs are provided via a booking service.<br />

YOUTH INITIATIVES<br />

Preliminary work on a Youth Strategy has begun with a proposal to form a Youth Advisory<br />

Group to assist the <strong>Museum</strong> in developing programs relevant to the youth market. Draft terms<br />

of reference have been developed. This group will be set up in <strong>2002</strong>–03.<br />

PROCEDURES FOR CUSTOMER COMMENTS AND COMPLAINTS<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> has two policies in place relating to handling visitor complaints:<br />

• Policy 1—Handling Customer Comments on Exhibit Contents<br />

• Policy 2—Handling Customer Comments and Complaints<br />

<strong>The</strong>se policies are designed to demonstrate to customers that the <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Museum</strong><br />

is knowledgeable, applies intellectual rigour to its research and knowledge base and is responsive<br />

to customer comments. <strong>The</strong> procedure is as follows:<br />
