Banele Khoza’s gallery/shop/studio/artist project in vibey 

Braamfontein, done out in soft pastels, is a light and airy space for the 

expression of creativity. You can view the current exhibition, Blue is 

the Warmest Colour, with works by artists such as Vusi Beauchamp,

Walk around Standard Bank Art Gallery’s 3D experience which

The Big Flower Fight is going to be a big 

blooming joy to watch. This is to flower lovers 

what The Great British Bake Off is to bakers. 

It’s a (friendly) floral fight between 10 pairs of 

florists, sculptors and garden designers, who 

pull out all the stops to see who can build the 

biggest, boldest and most beautiful garden 

sculptures. There are challenges including 

woodwork, floristry and landscaping, and the 

competitors will be encouraged to use plants 

and materials that are earth-friendly. Each 

week a team will be eliminated ... leading up 

to an exciting floral finale, when one team

How to Get Away with Murder – all you need know is it’s a Shonda 

Rhimes legal drama/thriller. What more could you want? Staring Viola 

Davis as Annalise Keating, a law professor at a prestigious university in

In Last Breath, a commercial deep sea diver is stranded on the seabed. He

Attitude 

is king 

Benoni’s professional life coach, Sanèl le Roux (46), has mastered the art of guiding 

people through difficult situations. We thought it appropriate to ask her for 

a few guidelines on how to survive the lockdown situation. 

She quoted Charles Swindoll: “Life is 10 

per cent what happens to you and 90 

per cent how you react to it.” 

“This means that our attitude in this 

situation is of utmost importance. 

We have to be very careful with what 

we read, listen to and think about. To 

maintain a positive attitude, you need 

to increase the positive the influx of 

positive information and thoughts in 

your life by thinking about what you are 

thinking about. When you catch yourself 

getting absorbed in negativity, stop 

it immediately and start thinking and 

talking about the things you are grateful 

for. Manage what goes on in your social 

media feeds. If there is too much negativity, 

maybe it is time to unfollow a few 

people, pages and groups,” she believes. 

One of the greatest lessons Sanèl has 

learnt in life is to take it one day at a 

time. “We have so much to deal with, 

with this pandemic and all it entails, 

that we cannot afford to think too far in 

advance. The uncertainty can become 

overwhelming. Focus on what is on your 

plate for today and let tomorrow take 

care of itself. Worrying about a future 

that is uncharted and out of your control 

is a futile exercise.” 

Sanèl had to overcome challenges in 

her own life. She has been exposed to alcoholism, 

physical and emotional abuse, 

poverty, depression, anxiety, addiction, 

adultery and betrayal. At times she felt 

like giving up, but she persevered and 

came out stronger on the other side of 

it. She now uses these experiences to 

help others overcome their own difficulties 

through speaking engagements 

and coaching. 

She was introduced to coaching in 2002 

while working as a trainer for an international restaurant group. “I fell in love with the 

power of coaching and how it can transform a person’s life. It became my dream to 

become qualified and be the best I can be in this field,” she remembers. Sanèl qualified 

as a life coach and started her own consultation business, Sanèl le Roux Coaching, 

in 2009. 

What about life coaching interested you? 

The positive changes coaching process brought on in the lives of individuals was 

intriguing to me, and I loved being part of a growth process that changed people for 

the better. I saw how it infiltrated into every area of their lives and I wanted to be a 

part of something so profound. 

Tell us about your own journey? 

I will have to write a book or two to fully answer this question! I grew up in a dysfunctional 

home and my parents divorced when I was 11. My three sisters and I stayed 

with my mother through my teenage years without any financial support from my 

father. After school I went straight to work as there was no funds to study further. I 

got married when I was 25, had my first child and got divorced four years later. My 

son and I relocated and a few months thereafter I met my current husband. We have 

since had another boy and have been happily married for 15 years.” Her son, Sashin 

(20), is studying theology and works full time at a church in Mpumalanga and Josh 

(14) is home-schooled and following his passion for racing. “My family fuels my zest 

for life and they support all my endeavours.” 

How did you overcome your challenges and what mind shift 

is necessary to overcome problems? 

My faith is a vital part of my life and the foundation of everything I am. Therefore, 

my first step in challenging times is always to turn to God and His written Word for 

guidance. Challenges helps us grow as people and it helps to look at hard times 

from that perspective. I ask myself, what am I learning? What needs to change? How 

can I adapt? It helps to look at challenges as opportunities rather than problems. For 

instance, being stuck at home for such a long time is definitely a challenge, so I ask 

myself what opportunities do I have here. I had an opportunity to do online group 

coaching and inspire women, I read a few books I never had time for before. It was 

an opportunity to spend more quality time together as a family, I even learnt how to 

take stains out of clothes. (I was very proud of that!) 

How do you know for sure what your life purpose is? 

In my view, there is one sure way and that is to be in a close and intimate relationship 

with our Maker. I have two coaching processes I take people through that helps 

them come to a clear conclusion, but this takes listening closely for the Holy 

Spirit’s guidance. 

What are the most common challenges people who need your guidance 

struggle with? 

Poor self-image, various fears such as fear of failure, fear of success, fear of rejection. 

Self-sabotage, such as procrastination or making excuses.

You say when life lacks purpose, 

focus and direction it is void of 

fulfillment and success. Is the lockdown 

not taking away our focus, 

direction and purpose? Can you 

give a few guidelines readers can 

benefit from during lockdown? 

We can allow the lockdown to 

distract us and make us feel useless 

or directionless, or we can choose 

to have a more positive outlook. It 

is very important to choose to use 

this time more creatively and not to 

get stuck in a rut. Maybe it is time 

to rethink the use of your time. It 

might be time to re-invent yourself, 

you might want to understand what 

the things are that you really value 

in life. You might want to reconsider 

your circle of friends and align with 

more positive people. Maybe you 

can feed the poor or offer time to 

pack parcels. There are a multitude of 

ideas for personal growth and development 

during this time, get those 

creative juices flowing. 

Many people are losing their jobs 

or are under financial stress. How 

do we go forward and start building 

a future again post lockdown? 

How do you eat an elephant? One 

spoonful at a time. In other words, 

slowly but surely we need to find our 

way out of the darkness, there is no 

quick fix or magic wand. It will take hard work and determination. It will take 

the people of our beloved country to take hands and support one another. 

I have believed for a long time that the successful future of our country lies 

in us taking a bit more risk and trying new ventures - entrepreneurship is the 

way to go. We need to become inventive with the way in which we move 

forward from this pandemic. 

You help people to grow spiritually, to embrace their worth and to align 

their lives with their unique design. You do this by teaching them to...? 

Firstly, it is important to understand who you are in relation to your Maker. 

Then it is important to understand that He created you in a specific way with 

a unique personality, set of skills, attributes and life experiences for a specific 

purpose. I have various tools and assessments that assist and guide people to 

get answers to these questions. 

During lockdown it was evident that where our footprint decreases the 

earth started to heal. We do need to live mindful to save the earth. How 

will you practise mindful living from here? What will you do differently? 

I think recycling and watching our wastage is very important. Wasting is one 

of my pet peeves and has surfaced strongly during this lockdown. Buying 

more carefully, not using plastic shopping bags, cooking smaller portions, repurposing 

plastic bottles are some of the small ways in which I am contributing 

to be more mindful of our planet. 

As a life coach, how can you guide people to lead a conscious-living 

lifestyle?

Swapping your daily shake 

for a plant-based alternative

How it’s made 

For Tri Blend premium vegan 1 , ingredients like quinoa, flaxseed and pea were selected.

Plant-based protein 

Using plant-based instead of animal-based proteins, like milk, makes the composition 

of the product different. Protein is a composition of smaller molecules called amino 

acids.

one is low in methionine. 

However, mixing complementary sources of plant-protein helps us to obtain all the 

essential amino acids in their adequate amounts to have a complete protein. Therefore, 

together, the ingredients of Tri Blend provide a source of protein. The product is also 

suitable for vegans and can be part of a plant-based diet. 

Why Tri Blend is a great snack

make. It’s fluffy and delicious, and you can enjoy it hot or cold. All 

you need is to pop two generous tablespoons each of instant 

coffee, granulated sugar (we like brown, but you can use white) 

and boiling water into a small bowl. Whip with a whisk or hand 

mixer until foamy, thick and fudgy in colour. With an electric 

whisk, this took us two minutes. Then pour your hot or cold milk 

into a a glass until three-quarters full, spoon the whipped coffee 

on top, (take your Instagram photo now), then stir vigorously 

through the milk. Top hint: if you’ve got children, do the same 

with Milo. It’s brilliant. Just whip four tablespoons of Milo with 

four tablespoons of cream, then pour onto of a mug of hot milk 

(makes two).

Traditional Austrian beef 

goulash soup 

(Serves 4) 

You’ll need: 

45ml (3 Tblsps) olive oil; 3 (600g) 

medium onions, chopped; 5ml (1 tsp) 

garlic, finely chopped; 15ml (1 Tblsp) 

tomato paste; 15ml 

(1 Tblsp) paprika; 2.5ml (½ tsp) ground 

cumin; 2.5ml (½ tsp) marjoram; 2.5ml 

(½ tsp) thyme ; 2.5ml (½ tsp) cayenne 

pepper (optional); 250g boneless, 

cubed beef; 60ml (¼ cup) red wine; 

1L (4 cups) warm beef stock; 3 (660g) 

medium potatoes, peeled and diced; 

salt and pepper 

To serve: sour cream; chopped chives; 

crusty bread 

Method: 

Heat the oil in a large, heavy based 

pot over medium heat. Add onions 

and garlic and sauté until tender for 

8 to 10 minutes. Stir in tomato paste, 

paprika, cumin, marjoram, thyme and 

cayenne pepper. Add beef and fry, for 

5 minutes. Stir in red wine and simmer 

for 5 minutes. Add stock, cover and 

cook for 40 minutes. 

Add potatoes and simmer for a further 

30 minutes until potatoes and meat are 

fork-tender. 

Season the soup to taste, ladle into 

bowls and top each portion with a 

dollop of sour cream. Sprinkle some 

chives on top and serve with freshly 

baked bread. 

Eat in! 

Hearty goulash. Slow cooked lamb. And two

and slow cooked lamb

Lamb neck stuffed with ricotta and herbs with lemon jus 

(Serves 6) 


1kg deboned lamb neck; 200g ricotta; 10g each chopped basil and parsley; 

zest of 1 lemon; one each onion, carrot and celery stick, all chopped; 1000ml 

stock; 1 lemon, juiced and zested; 100g butter; salt and pepper 

Method: 

In a food processor combine the ricotta, herbs and lemon juice, and season 

with salt and pepper. 

Open up the neck and season with salt and pepper on the inside and out. 

Lay the neck “skin” side down and spread the filling over the entire surface 

of the meat. Roll up like a Swiss roll and secure meat by tying with butcher’s 

string. Prepare a roasting tin with the chopped vegetables and stock. Lay the 

lamb neck on top of the vegetables. 

Braise in a preheated oven of 160°C for two to three hours or until cooked. 

When you place a skewer in the meat it should have no resistance. 

Once cooked, remove meat from the pan and allow to rest. 

Combine the vegetables and stock from the roasting pan and blend. Pour 

into a pot and bring to the boil. Add the zest, lemon juice and butter. Season 

with salt and pepper. Strain before serving. 

Serve with a glass of delicious Steenberg Merlot. Enjoy!

Pumpkin donuts with dark chocolate 

(Serves 6 to 8) 


1 ½ cups cooked pumpkin, mashed; 1 cup 

self-raising flour; 2 eggs; a pinch of salt; ½ tsp 

cinnamon; oil for deep frying; 1 cup cinnamon 

sugar; 100g dark chocolate, melted 

Method: 

Cook pumpkin, drain excess liquid and allow to 

cool. Put all ingredients except dark chocolate 

and cinnamon sugar in a food processor and 

mix until smooth. Heat oil and add tablespoons 

of batter to the oil and fry until golden brown. 

Roll in cinnamon sugar and drizzle with the 

melted dark chocolate.

An orange resolution 

(Serves 8) 


2 cups frozen mango chunks; 2 cups 

frozen peach slices; 2 cups Greek 

yoghurt; 1 cup baby carrots; 1 cup 

orange juice; 1 cup pineapple chunks; ¼ 

cup honey; 1 banana, peeled 

Method: 

Put the mango chunks, peach slices, 

yoghurt, carrots, orange juice, pineapple 

chunks, honey and banana in a blender 

and whizz until everything’s smooth. 

The big green 

(Serves 1) 


1 ½ cups kale, stems removed and 

chopped finely; ½ cup baby spinach 

leaves, chopped finely; ½ cup frozen 

blueberries; 1 cup apple cider or apple 

juice; 1 tsp ginger, freshly grated (the 

easiest way to peel ginger is to scrape 

the skin off with a spoon); 1 tsp maple 

syrup 

Method: 

Whizz all the ingredients in a blender 

until everything is well mixed and 

liquefied. Drink immediately. 

Raspberry jubilee 

(Serves 2) 


¾ cup frozen raspberries; ½ cup orange 

juice; ½ cup pomegranate or cranberry 

juice; ½ cup vanilla flavour yoghurt; ¼ 

cup All-Bran cereal 

Method: 

Place fruit in blender container. Add 

juices, yoghurt and cereal. Blend until 

smooth. If desired, sweeten to taste with 

a little honey.

(Serves 3 - 4) 


1 medium-sized sweet potato, 

cooked; 1 medium-sized banana, 

peeled; 2 cups fat-free milk; ¼ cup 

vanilla flavoured Greek yoghurt; 1 

Tblsp honey; ¼ tsp cinnamon; ½ cup 

ice 

Method: 

Add all ingredients into blender. 

Cover; whizz on high for about 

one minute or until smooth. Serve 

immediately. 

Potent turmeric & ginger 

(Serves 1) 


1 ripe banana; 2 tsps powdered 

turmeric; 1 ¼ tsps ground ginger; 

2 Tblsps hemp seeds; 2 Tblsps 

cashew nuts; 200ml filtered water; 

½ cup frozen mango; ½ cup frozen 

pineapple 

Method: 

Whizz the banana, ginger, turmeric, 

water, hemp seeds and cashews for 

about 30 seconds. Add frozen fruit, 

then blend until creamy smooth. 

Add more water if you want it more 

juice-like. 

Apple pie 

(Serves 2) 


1 red apple, peeled and cored; ½ 

cup non-fat plain yoghurt; ¼ tsp 

vanilla extract; 1 tsp brown sugar; ¼ 

tsp nutmeg; ¼ tsp cinnamon; pinch 

of ground cloves (optional); 1 cup 

ice cubes 

Method: 

Chop the apple into small cubes. 

Pop all ingredients into blender and 

pulse until well mixed. 

* Top with whipped cream and 

cinnamon for an extra sweet treat!

shared with us how colour can impact your state 

of mind ... with calming blues and soothing greens 

taking the limelight. 



After spending week after week after very long week in lockdown, it may be time for a change. Nothing 

refreshes and gives a whole new look than a colour update. But it’s not just about aesthetics. Colour is also 

all about how it makes you feel ... there’s a real science behind how colour affects the brain, and how it can 

play a role in your state of mind and mood. And as so many of us are looking for balance, calm and a little less 

stress in our lives, adding shades of blue and green could work wonders. 

Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body, and has been shown to help balance hormones, lower 

breathing rates, slow down the metabolism and reduce blood pressure. Starting off your day surrounded by 

soft shades – think easy-on-the-eye powder or sky blue – will help bring inner peace and a sense of calm. 

We’re massively besotted with green when it comes to decorating ... and think creating your very own green 

room is a fine idea. The close link between pale soft greens and nature means the colour is often perceived 

as a soothing shade that helps to alleviate stress and aids in fending off negative feelings. It’s really relaxing 

– think of ‘the green room’ in TV studios where guests and performers retreat and relax before and between 

takes. Green also promotes concentration, so is perfect for a space in your home where you need a calm, 

focused mind. 

Mix it up a little with the beautiful colours that hover between blue and green. Turquoise, a gem which 

combines blue and green with a touch of yellow, was believed by the ancient Persians to ward off the evil 

eye. They wore the blue-green stones as a protective charm. It may be a bit much to have an entire 

room in this strong colour, but touches of it make an eye-catching, bold statement. Teal, a mixture 

of blue, green and a touch of grey, is simply a darker shade of turquoise. Both teal and turquoise 

radiate the peace, calm and tranquillity of blue and the balance and growth of green. Consider 

using turquoise in the bedroom to create a sweet feminine feel, while darker teal shades add 

lively sophistication to living rooms and hallways. 

On the opposite end of the scale, you may prefer a shade that helps stimulate your mind or 

gives your creativity a powerful boost. In which case, hello orange. This is a power colour to 

be reckoned with, as some theorists maintain that when you’re in the presence of orange 

you increase the oxygen supply to the brain, which stimulates mental activity. It’s also 

thought to encourage sociability by energising people and lessening their inhibitions. Bold 

orange could be a little intimidating ... we think the softer shades of nectarine, coral, orange 

rose, sunset, rust and saffron would be easier to live with. 





The sweet-scented 

HYACINTH 

Our indoor plant of the month is the sweetly fragrant pot hyacinth. A cluster 

of these lovely flowers fill a room with their delicate, fresh scent. When grown 

indoors, pot hyacinths like bright indirect light, not direct sunlight and they 

need moist, but not wet, soil. Each pot plant has a number of flower spikes 

that open and remain attractive for several weeks if the plant is kept in a cool 

but well-lit room. Remove flower spikes that are over. Once the plant has 

finished flowering, keep it in a cool room with moist soil and plant it out in 

spring, for flowering the following spring. Alternatively, the hyacinth can stay 

in its pot. The foliage will die down, but it will come up the following year if it

DIG IT! 

Is it a pansy? Is it a viola? 

Pansy Panola is for gardeners who can’t decide which 

they love more ... pansies or violas! This pansy is a mix 

of both. It has the flower power of a viola but with 

pansy-like blooms, that are bigger than violas but 

not as big as the extra-large pansies. The plants are 

compact (growing to 20cm high and 25cm wide) so 

they fit in anywhere and everywhere ... garden beds, 

borders, sunny corners, patio pots and window boxes. 

You can even plant them in the vegetable garden 

because the blooms are edible. Make sure you plant 

them in full sun in winter, and remember they need 

well composted soil. With regular watering and 

feeding, these Panola pansies will keep on flowering 

into summer, and with less stretch than regular

Did you know that planting a rose now 

allows it to settle in over winter, ready 

to flower in October? Ludwig’s pick is

it flowers deep into winter, with 

fragrant classically shaped pale-yellow

a neat, shoulder high hybrid tea rose,

Garden tasks for June 

Transplant roses that are planted in too much shade or in the wrong position.

Rake up all fallen leaves and add them to the compost heap or store in bags to 

make rich leaf compost. 

Remember to water flowers and vegetables as early as possible in the morning 

so the leaves are dry by evening. 

Protect tender leafy vegetables with frost cloth if very cold weather or frost is 

predicted. 

Plant winter colour in sunny beds ... pansies, violas, petunias (in dry winter areas), 

poppies and calendulas. For shade or semi-shade areas, plant primulas. 

Feed winter leafy vegetables with a nitrogen-rich liquid fertilizer. 

Stake broad beans and Brussels sprouts.

Home made dog treats 

Put aside the bananas. Since we’re baking, we may as well make something 

yummy for the dogs, too. 

Peanut butter biscuits 


1 cup cooked pumpkin puree; 1/4 cup peanut butter (choose one 

with no added sugar or salt); 2 eggs; 3 cups whole wheat flour. 

Method: Preheat oven to 180°C. Beat the pumpkin puree, 

peanut butter and eggs well until mixed – around 2 

minutes. Slowly add in the flour, a little at a time, 

mixing gently until just combined. Knead the 

dough a little, then roll out to about 2cm thick. 

Cut into squares (or shapes, if you prefer) and 

put onto a tray lined with baking paper. 

Bake for around 20 to 25 minutes, 

or until cooked and the edges are 

golden. Cool before storing in an 

airtight container.
