East River also providedequipment to the recovery efforts.Recovering fromSEVEREWEATHEREast River’s employees are always atthe ready to repair damages and restorepower after severe weather. Apart fromfrigid temperatures, the past winterwas mild, with minimal weather-relatedimpacts to East River’s system.The most severe weather event to impact our regionwithin the past year happened in September 2019,bringing three tornados in Sioux Falls and heavy rainsthroughout southeastern South Dakota.East River’s system performed well through theSeptember storm, experiencing just a few momentarybreaker operations. While the tornadoes causedextensive damage in parts of Sioux Falls, our crewsinspected East River’s facilities in the area and didn’tfind any significant damages.Sioux Valley Energy and Southeastern Electric bothreported only a few minor outages related to the highwinds and tree damage. Overall, East River was veryfortunate to not have more impacts from the storm.28
“East River’s system performed well through thestorm,” said Chief Operations Officer Mark Hoffman.“The ability of our system to withstand such extremeweather comes from the hard work of our employeesin maintaining the equipment as well as from theinvestments that have been made in the system byour member cooperatives.”The September storm’s heavy rain brought massiveflooding to Madison and Lake County. Luckily, EastRiver’s facilities weren’t impacted by the flood.East River provided support to the greater Madisoncommunity through equipment and volunteerassistance, even helping to evacuate and rescueresidents from their homes.Six of our employees aided in the relief effortsthrough their roles in the Madison Fire Department.East River also provided equipment to the recoveryefforts including a snowcat, payloader, semi, low boytrailer and a flat bottom boat.“A big thanks to all of our employees who helped outthe city during that time of need,” said Hoffman. “Asa Madison community partner, we were thankful to beable to help out by providing equipment and otherassistance.”Severe weather also swept across our service area inJune 2020, causing momentary blinks, damages andoutages on East River’s system. In total, the stormsimpacted 84 of East River’s structures. The mostsevere damage from the summer storms occurred onJune 4 along a stretch of line between WAPA’s Grotonsubstation and East River’s Ordway substation. A3-mile stretch of line along that path was damaged,with 52 total structures and one substation impacted.East River crews worked to remove and replace a pole thatcaught on fire after a summer storm rolled through theYankton area in June 2020.29
