Wellness CommitteeEast River’s Wellness Committee is a voluntarygroup of employees that come together to promoteworkforce health and wellness through annual eventsand programs. One of the past year’s most popularchallenges was Project Zero which the committeehosted to help employees avoid weight gain over theholidays. Employees joined together in groups andsubmitted weekly weigh-ins with the goal of eithermaintaining their weight or losing weight through thechallenge.“Participating in the challenges that the WellnessCommittee puts on has been so motivating,” saidKenny Clements, Madison maintenance foreman.“The challenges keep you aware and help you makehealthier choices. It is fun to have some friendlycompetition and the challenges bring comraderywith the teams. I appreciate all the time and effortthe committee puts in to provide healthy activities forEast River’s employees.”When COVID-19 social distancing recommendationstook hold in spring 2020, the Wellness Committeestepped in with fun ways for employees to remainfocused on their wellness. The committee launcheda steps challenge that encouraged employees tostay active, especially when working from home.Employees signed up for the challenge as teamsand their steps were calculated using wearabledevices. The challenge lasted for 40 days and over50 employees participated. At the end of the stepschallenge, East River employees had walked nearly 20million steps.“While doing the steps challenge, I was more intentionalabout getting movement in during my workday. Beingpart of a team keeps me motivated because I don’twant to let anyone down,” said Clements.A water challenge during the summer encouragedemployees to stay hydrated. The committee alsolaunched a virtual wellness community to connectemployees and provide daily movement reminders.“Participating in the challenges that theWellness Committee puts on has been somotivating. The challenges keep you awareand help you make healthier choices.I appreciate all the time and effort thecommittee puts in to provide healthy activitiesfor East River’s employees.”Kenny ClementsEast River Madison Maintenance ForemanEmployees are using the community to share healthyrecipes, links to workouts, wellness articles and otherencouraging comments. Quarterly lunch and learnevents that were previously held in person were movedto a virtual setting through the pandemic, allowingemployees to participate from their individual officespaces.“I joined the Wellness Committee because I knowthat healthy habits are a crucial part to everyoneperforming their best on the job. Healthy employeesequal fewer injuries and sick days needed and thecommittee adds some fun and encouragement tokeep up healthy habits,” said Anne Hall, WellnessCommittee member. “The best part about being partof the Wellness Committee is that by thinking ofchallenges and new ways to keep employees healthy,I also do better at applying those healthy habits to myown lifestyle and the health of my family.”33
