Following our 2018 regional livestockdevelopment summit that our cooperative networkheld in Brookings on the campus of South DakotaState University, we expanded our partnerships withother ag associations into 2020 to host local livestockseminars throughout our service area.ag associations to resume these local seminars,”said Jaspers. “Our region’s ag producers have beenhit hard over the past several years. These seminarsare designed to help provide producers with theinformation they need to pursue diversification andbuild enhanced resilience in their operations.”The local seminars are targeted at producers who arethinking of building a livestock facility or expanding anexisting facility and are structured to provide answersand ideas for producers, ag lenders, ag insuranceagents and others involved in agriculture.In partnership with Ag United, we hosted the firstlocal seminar in March 2019 at East River’s maincampus in Madison. The seminar was attended bymore than 50 farmers and industry representatives.Similar meetings were held in July 2019 at Lake AreaTech in Watertown and the Agtegra Innovation Centerin Aberdeen.A Mitchell area livestock information meeting thatwas scheduled to be held in March 2020 at MitchellTechnical College was postponed due to theCOVID-19 pandemic. Before it was postponed, themeeting garnered significant interest with more than150 registrants and spurred discussion and intereston holding an additional meeting in southeast SouthDakota. We’ll be working with Mitchell TechnicalCollege on rescheduling the event when it’s safe todo so.“After the pandemic is behind us, we are lookingforward to continuing our partnerships with otherEast River, in collaboration with several ag associations,hosted a series of livestock development seminars in2019. We plan to resume the seminars after the COVID-19pandemic passes.Producers who have shown the most interest inthe local seminars are those who feel they need todiversify and add cash flow to their operations andthose who wish to convert existing feeding facilities tomore environmentally-friendly facilities and facilitiesthat improve animal health and efficiency.Co-sponsorship of these events has grown to includeAg United, the SD Soybean Research and PromotionCouncil, Agtegra Cooperative, Dakotaland Feeds, LLCand the SD Pork Producers Council.43
