A Very Busy MonthBy: Howard Galin / Happy GardeningSeptember is a very busy and importantmonth for desert gardeners. As we move intomore moderate temperatures and decreased directsunshine, many of our plants in our gardens emerge from their heatinduced “summer dormancy” and begin to grow once again, bringingabout a second surge of growth.We should begin to prune awaysun/heat damaged foliage from ourlandscape. This will stimulate new andhardy growth and flowering of rosesand fruiting plants.Many varieties of tomatoes andpeppers can be heavily pruned leavingapproximately 3”-5” of stem remaining. This will promote new flowersand fruits forming during the coming months, giving you a secondcrop right around Thanksgiving!September is also an ideal time to fertilize the soil again. This willstimulate new foliage and strengthen your plants for the winter monthsby making them more resistant during the oncoming cold and windyseasons.In addition, September is a good time to use “systemic” insecticidearound agave, yucca and aloe to “kill off” weevil eggs that have beenburied underground that would hatch in the early spring monthsfeasting on the plant roots and killing off your desert landscaping.At this time sulphur can be added to the soil in order to lower the pH.This will reduce alkali levels that have built up during the hot and drysummer months.Rock Mulch usually lasts about five years before it needs to besupplemented. The end of September will be a good time to add rockmulch to freshen up your landscape’s appearance. Keep in mind thatrock mulch costs about $25-$30 perton, so budget accordingly.September begins our secondplanting season, so nurseries willhave fresh supplies of plants, trees andshrubs. And seasonal plants such as“Winter Decorative Cabbage” and rootvegetables become available after Labor Day.During September, the temperature is moderate while the soilremains warm. These are the perfect conditions for new plants to takeroot and establish themselves for life in our desert neighborhoods.Have any questions?
