I am the reverse of his age andI had to ponder that. True, I have manyfriends well into their tenth decade, mostof them still living independently and inrelatively good health as my husbandand I are. Why is that, I wondered?We were born in the middle of theGreat Depression followed by WorldWar II and all its subsequent rationingand yet we survived and survived well.Our supper table was by no means abanquet but we had fresh vegetablesgrown in our Victory garden, in-seasoncarrots and potatoes kept in sand in thecold room in the cellar in the winter,fresh fruit much of which we pickedourselves at the sides of the countrylanes and preserved in quart jars whensummer was past, cheap cuts of meat,lots of stew, ox tails, pickled tongue, liver,tripe, boiling chickens and soups galore.On very rare occasions a pie plate offreshly made maple cream fudge wasput on the back porch tocool—a Saturday nighttreat! Candies, pop, andchocolates were rare.Potato chips hadn’t beeninvented yet. So slim andlithe we stayed.Our outdoor gamescontributed to our sveltebodies. We were never still. In winter itwas a two mile walk to the tobogganinghill on a cold, Saturday afternoon,or a mile walk to the outdoor rink ona Friday evening at Earlscourt Park.If we were very, very lucky, we wouldstop in at the Ice Cream Company onSt. Clair Avenue for a hot chocolate onthe way home. Of course, none of theseactivities took place on a Sunday. Thatwas truly a day of rest and a quiet familyday. I loved Sundays, the long walk toSunday School, the delicious, specialdinner Mom always had ready and thequiet evening listening to Fibber McGeeand Molly on the radio.Although the indulgences of the lasthalf of the century, with hours spentvegging out in front of Logie Baird’sinvention, those early days of growingup and very healthy, active living haspaid off for me and my friends. We arehealthier and living longer than ourcounterparts in the early part of thetwentieth century. There is no doubtwith this digital world ourdescendents now live in,seated on their derrieres,with their only activitybeing the movementof their digits over aminiscule screen, andregardless of medicalimprovements, I have toagree with my grandson:my generation has beentruly blessed by the verytiming of our birth.Page 36“Time is the longest distance between two places.” - Tennessee WilliamsSept-Oct 2020
