This wasn’t the casefor my father and the oldest of my ninesiblings.My two older sisters and oldestbrother started their education in thesame one-room schoolhouse our fatherhad attended as a boy.The school was only half a mile fromthe family farm so we weren’t told talesof walking ten miles, through the snow,up hill, both ways. However Dad didhave other stories about attending littleQuinn school.Being a one-room school house,all the students from grade one tograde eight were together in the sameclassroom. The teacher put the firstgraders in the front row where she couldkeep an eye on the youngest studentsand provide help with assignments.In the morning the teacher handedout assignments to each grade to becompleted before the end of theday. Teachers had to be able to copewith multiple grades and subjects,while keeping order. The grades gothigher toward the back of the class,where older children were expectedto be responsible enough to workon their own.There were many rules not neededin modern schools. Someone had tolight the wood stove in the winterto warm the class before lessonsbegan. Every day atrecess the children played tag; last oneout was ‘it.’My father’s desk was in the front row,on the far side from the boys’ door. Hewas literally as far as he could get fromthe outside. Naturally, he began everyrecess and every game of tag by being‘it.’ The injustice of this situation rankledDad but, what could he do? All throughthe fall and winter, he was ‘it;’ unableto ever beat the odds and get out evensecond last.It was a warm day in late spring whena plan came to him. He spentthat recess standing at the blackboardwriting lines on the evils of rule-breaking.He learned that day; as we all learnedeventually as children; that mothersand teachers truly do have eyes in thebacks of their heads. They are alwayslooking—don’t be fooled becausetheir back is turned.My oldest sister Sherry learnedthat same lesson in that same oneroomschoolhouse some twentyyears later when she started there.It must run in the family. Yes, forsome reason she has never said,Sherry took a flying leap out thatsame window one day, when theteacher wasn’t looking.She got caught, of course.Publisher’s note: My dad told talesof walking to school every morningbefore all the rest, to light the stove.
