The Criterion Theatre was designed by the architect Thomas
Verity and was fitted into an already existing block. The most
remarkable thing about the Criterion is that almost the entire
building is underground and even the upper Circle can't be
reached without going down stairs. The exterior of the building
is in such an original condition that it is considered to be the
best surviving example of Thomas Verity's work.
The Apollo Victoria opened in 1930 during the “supercinema”
era. Uniquely placed between two major roads, the
Apollo Victoria has two frontages, causing taxi drivers to
nickname the cinema Sing-Sing. The venue has hosted
popular productions such as The Sound of Music, Fiddler on
the Roof, and Wicked.
The Lyric Theatre is one of 12 theaters built in the 1880s
during a building boom. It is also the oldest remaining theater
on Shaftsbury Avenue. The Theatre temporarily closed in 1894
owing to an influenza epidemic but reopened to great success
presenting both musical and non-musical productions.
Haley Green grew up in the south-western suburbs of Chicago. Prior to
her family’s 2016 move to the United Kingdom, Haley spent 12 years
teaching middle-school science and ruffling feathers at her kids’ PTA
meetings. Shortly after arriving in London, Haley threw herself into
her trophy-wife status by searching for the perfect latte, having long
lunches with new friends, and leisurely exploring London
neighborhoods. Haley spent four years serving on the board of the
American Women’s Club of London, first as Director of Activities and
then as President. Nowadays she can be found reminding her teenage
son to use deodorant and wondering what she has done to upset her
tweenage daughter.
