Anger
over
quarry
By ROBYN BRISTOW
AWaikari farmer, yarn producer,and
fashion designer is prepared to takethe
approval of aquarry extension above her
property to the High Court over her concernsabout
its environmental impact.
Beverley Forrester told the Hurunui
District Council last week that the craggy
limestoneskyline near her homewould
be changed irrevocably because of the
extension of the quarry, whichwas
creeping ever closertoher property.It
was also causing adust nuisanceas
traffic travelled to and from the quarry,
and from the activitieswithin it. The
extension of the farmbased quarrywas
approved by the council after anonnotified
application.
‘‘It is getting progressively closer to my
houseand at timesthe dust is
incredible,’’she said. ‘‘I don’t dispute
what farmers candowith theirland, but
it is the compliance with the consent for
the quarry that Ihave an issuewith.’’
Mrs Forrester says several years of
frustration aboutthe quarry’s operation,
and the consentfor its extension and its
hours, has prompted her to take action.
‘‘To me it is not an extension, it is a
separate operation. Iamprepared to
take it to the High Court,’’she said.
Mrs Forrester produces dyefree yarns
from her BlackHills farm and has
restoredheritage cottages on the land—
part of atourism operation.
She is critical of the nonnotified
application, and the failure of the
council to monitorthe activitiesofthe
landuse consent at the quarry. She had
been in regulartouchwith the council
aboutthe issues,and hadmonitored
vehicle movementsand operating hours.
Garden club marks 70 years
By SHELLEY TOPP
Cust/West Eyreton Garden
Club membersmarked their
70th anniversary by planting a
tree in the Jack Graham
Reserve, at the Cust
Community Centre grounds.
ACornus ‘‘EddiesWhite
Wonder’’ flowering dogwood
tree, donated by Querky Style
and Roses at Cust, was
plantedbytwo longstanding
committee members, Marilyn
Rossiter and Val O’Loughlin,
last Saturday afternoon.
The ceremony was followed
by an afternoon tea at
Krakatoa,the Summerhill
home and garden owned by
BarryFrost, another longstanding
member of the club.
The garden at Krakatoa was
designed by Alfred Buxton,
New Zealand’sleading
garden designer during the
earlydecades of the 20th
century.
The club’s anniversary
The club’s firstmeeting was
held on May 3, 1950, withthe
aim of developing interest in
gardens, stagingflower and
vegetable shows, buying
plantsfor members, helping
children to become interested
in gardening, and
From Page 1
She loves playingpool, having never
played until the coupleboughtthe hotel.
She saysthere has never been any
trouble at the pub, but it wasmuchharder
to do business once new liquor licensing
laws were broughtin.
Mavisrecalls the dayswhen publicans
enjoyed abeer behind the bar with
patrons. Now,that has becomeanono.
‘‘Youare not supposedtohave adrink
when you are working,’’ she says.
Kojakplaying the piano, and Dennis,
also known as Dingo, are just two of the
patrons thatMavis willmiss. She says
many regulars stayedinthe pub.
important component of the business,
andprices of alcohol had goneup
considerably, Mavis says.
Thedays of filling halfgallon jars with
beer to take homewere largely gone, and
selfservice spirit taps had gone.
she said. ‘‘We’re always
Quarry concerns aired
From Page 1
She had become increasingly frustrated
over what she perceived as alack of
acknowledgement over several yearsofher
The granting of the extensionwas the last
straw, and she contacted Federated
Di amaster of the ninth hole
The Widest
Music Variety
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Aholeinone is no mean feat
for any golfer.
But Cheviot’s Di Yates has
made amockery of the odds,
which for an average golfer
are calculated at about 12,500
to 1, according to Google.
The 20handicapper scored
two holesinone, at the same
parthree hole, with the same
club, inside three weeks.
This takes her holeinone
tally to three at the Cheviot
Golf Club.
Di on both occasions used a
five wood on the 111metre
ninth hole, sponsored by
Charles Wiffen.
For anyone accomplishing
aholeinone, at the 9th, a
carton of Charles Wiffen wine
is on offer.
Her two holesinone
means she has managed to
well and truly stock up on the
sponsor’s product just in time
for Christmas.
Di’s first effort was
followed up just two days
later, on October 20, on her
way to winning the ladies’
senior finals.
Peter Yates says his wife’s
accomplishments are well
deserved.
She had spent afew weeks
keeping an eye on him after
surgery, and was finally
MAYOR CRAIG MACKLE
District in strong position
Irecentlyattendedaregional
conferenceinAshburton. This is a
biannual event and an opportunity to
meet with chief executivesand mayors
from all over the South Island.
There were several challengesthat
kept cropping up, including the
proposed water reforms,and
infrastructure replacement and
maintenance.
Icouldn’t help but think that we are in
areally good position right now.Our
infrastructure is in good nick thanks to
Governmentfundingfor the rebuild and
the greatjob the council’s
infrastructure rebuildteam has done
managing the project. We are asmall
council and to deliver a$38.6 million
project under budget (andifnot for
Covid19, on time)ispretty impressive.
While the last few yearshave been a
long, hardslog for everyone, let us take
alook at whatishappeningaround the
district right now: The reconstructionof
the Mayfair Theatre, the development of
WakatuQuay, construction of the
aquatic centre, the ScoutHall
refurbishment and the Mayoral Task
Force for Jobs funding. These are huge
thingsfor asmall community.
Ivisited the high school recently to
check out the ScienceRoad Show. The
students were really enjoyingthe
interactive learning experience, being
educatedwhile havingfun.
Principal JohnTait gave me atour of
the school grounds, including the
buildings thathave been given an
overhaulwith acolourscheme selected
by the students. The place is looking
good and it is nicetosee our local youth
taking pride in theirschool.
Speakingofschoollife, accordingto
the young audience at the WhatNow TV
show event recently, Iwas personally
responsible for sendingkids to school.
For my sins, Iwas gunked with green
slime (it’s quite surprising just how
much gunk that bucket held). Iwould
like to congratulate the younggirl who
threw the winning shot. She has agood
aim!
Somegood newsfor our tourism
sector:Kaikoura has topped the country
for the biggest increase in domestic
tourism over the school holidays
comparedwith 2019. Not only that, but
we are ranked No. 122 in Lonely Planet’s
new UltimateTravel List —the third
locationinNew Zealand behind
Fiordland and MountCook.
If you are feelingstressedor
pressured, Iwould urge everyone to
take astep back, take adeep breath and
realise how lucky we are to be living
here right now.
Taggart applies for
quarry consents
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Taggart Earthmoving has applied for
resource consent for aquarry at the
Rangiora Racecourse.
Both the Canterbury Regional
Council (ECan) and Waimakariri
District Council have received the
application for consents to establish,
maintain and operate an aggregate
quarry at 309 West Belt, Rangiora.
People wanting to make a
submission on the proposal must have
them into ECan by 5pm on Friday,
November 27.
The proposed quarry will involve
topsoil stripping, aggregate extraction
to adepth of no more than five metres
below ground level, and rehabilitation
of the site by backfilling.
Excavation and deposition of
material will maintain at least one
metre separation to groundwater at all
times.
No crushing, screening or washing
of aggregates is proposed at the site.
The aggregate material will be
transported off site for processing.
According to the application, the
quarrying will be undertaken in at
least eight stages of no more than two
hectares each, over atotal area of 14.5
hectares.
Other activities that are proposed
on site include formation of acoustic
bunds, flood mitigation, and
temporary stockpiling of aggregates.
It is proposed to manage adverse
effects by establishing and
maintaining bunding, as well as dust
control mitigation.
The site will be accessed only via a
dedicated access point from River
Road.
Taggart Earthmoving has applied
for resource consents from ECan for
land use to excavate material, permits
to discharge contaminants to air and
land, and awater permit to divert
floodwater.
The application to the Waimakariri
District Council is for land use
consent to establish, maintain and
operate an aggregate quarry in the
rural zone.
Aresource consent for 15 years is
sought.
Details of the application, ajoint
submission form and submission
information are available on the ECan
and Waimakariri District Council
websites.
Freedom camping revisited
Freedom camping in Hanmer Springs
is being revisited by the Hurunui
District Council.
In September, the council agreed to
consider shifting the camping areas in
Hanmer Springs to the Hanmer Sports
Reserve during its Long Term Plan
deliberations.
This month it voted to revoke the
motion. Instead, council officers have
been asked to consult with the
community in the Hanmer Springs
basin to identify potential freedom
camping sites.
Officers will report back to the
council with aproposed amendment to
the Freedom Camping Bylaw by March
2021.
Unbudgeted expenditure will be
used to hasten the work.
Councillors also supported areview
of the bylaw being brought forward to
2022, instead of 2023.
Mayor Marie Black said in areport
that the council resolution in
September had been drafted without
consultation with the community,
which was not desirable.
The new resolution will give the
community asay on potential sites in an
open and transparent process, she said.
‘‘It is important that we continue to
work with the community and
acknowledge we have not yet
determined the most desired outcomes
in this regard.’’
By DAVID HILL
Two Woodend School pupils are
encouraging Pegasus dog walkers to pick
up after their pooches.
Year 7pupils Ashley Kerr and Poppy
Archer became concerned about the
amount of dog poo on their local streets
while out walking during the Covid19
lockdown and decided to take action.
The pair approached Waimakariri
Mayor Dan Gordon to outline their
concerns and suggested adog poo bin
equipped with bags be provided to
encourage people to clean up after their
dogs.
The mayor responded with afacetoface
meeting to talk more about their idea.
“Ashley and Poppy had agreat attitude
towards solving the problem and myself,
WoodendSefton Community Board chair
Shona Powell and greenspace manager
Grant MacLeod are extremely proud of
them for coming up with this solution for
their community,” Mr Gordon says.
Once the details were fleshed out, a
report was put to the WoodendSefton
Community Board, which decided to back
the initiative.
Ms Powell says the girls put alot of
thought into the location of the bin, which
is situated beside the walking path off Te
Kohanga Drive.
The students have gone astep further
than just getting the bin installed, and
have volunteered to keep an eye on it, and
replenish supplies of poop bags when
needed.
INTRODUCING OUR NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF
INTRODUCING OUR NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF
HAYDEN CROSS
The Brook is excited to introduce its new chef, Hayden Cross.
Hayden brings a passion for fresh food, exciting flavours, and an array of new dishes to the menu.
He has a home-made philosophy, enjoys utilising seasonal, local produce, and uses simple
cooking methods, to preserve the natural flavours and nutrients.
Hayden’s experience and his desire to present really good food, ensures a great dining experience
for restaurant customers. There is no processed food, and anything bought in is limited to avoid
boxes and packaging in the kitchen.
The menu caters for all dietary requirements, and offers fresh and interesting daily specials for
lunch and dinner.
‘‘It is not fine dining, but it is really good food, and something a wee bit different,” says Hayden.
He sees himself as one of an experienced team providing a memorable dining experience for
guests through good food and service.
There is a new festive roast on the menu to enjoy, offering champagne ham, roast lamb or roast
pork. Only $12 for Super Gold card holders or $22 on the main dinner menu.
Hayden is happy to cater for five enjoying a birthday celebration, to up to 100 having a function
or office party. There will be Christmas specials with The Brook offering ideal spaces for staff
Christmas functions.
Food has been a passion for Hayden since aged 14. He worked his way up to head chef at the
age of 18, after beginning ‘‘in the sink’’ at Cobb and Co. when just 14. He has run restaurants at
Riccarton House, Mu Premium Steak House and Bar, and Chateau on the Park among others.
But a desire to leave the Christchurch Central Business area, has been North Canterbury’s gain.
While he commutes each day from Rolleston, he and his partner are keen to buy a rural property in
the Waimakariri district.
MAINPOWER PRIMARY SCHOOL
SPORTS COACHING PROGRAMME
TheNorth CanterburySport&Recreation Trust
celebrated the 10th anniversaryofthe MainPower
PrimarySchool Sports Coaching Programme last
week with aspecial eventatMainPower Oval. Current
and former MainPower Sports Coaches put on some
coaching demonstrations with studentfrom17local
schools in frontofalarge contingentofbusiness and
WaimakaririDistrictCouncil representatives.
MainPower CEO Andy Lester waspresentedwith a
commemorativeplaque by NCSRTChair DonRobertson,
commemorating MainPower’s decade of sponsorship
supportfor the coaching programme.
TheMainPower PrimarySchool Sports Coaching
Programme is regarded as one of the best of its kind
in NZ. Theprogramme startedin2010 in response to
studies highlighting thatmanychildren were not being
engaged in sportand physical activity. TheNCSRT
then employedtwo coaches to go into schools to teach
studentfundamental and specific sporting skills through
fun and inclusivedrills and games. Verysoon more
schools came into the programme and morecoaches
were employedtodeliver the fortnightly sessions.
Theprogramme nowextends from OuruhiaSchool in
the South, to View Hill School in the West and to Hapuku
School in Kaikoura, encompassing 42 schools and over
6,000 students from years 0-8. As aresult of the regular
speciliased sports coaching participating schools
receive, therehas been an increase in the number
of students keeping physically activeintosecondary
school and moregetting involved in club sports across
the region. Most importantly manychildren who are
not sports-inclined areencouraged to participate in a
positiveenvironmentwithout competitivepressures,
and as aresult they become moreconfidentand thus
morelikely to remain activethroughout their lives.
Thank you MainPower, from all North Canterbury Primary Schools
Doctor writes comic book
By SHELLEY TOPP
Oxford general practitioner Dr Richard
Clinghan will hold afamily evening at
the Kaiapoi Library to talk about his
new book, Jenny &The Eddies.
Dr Clinghan, originally from
Northern Ireland, works at the Oxford
Community Health Centre.
He was inspired to write Jenny &The
Eddies,acomic book about viruses and
vaccines, after last year’s measles
epidemic in New Zealand.
He also did the drawings for the book,
which aims to promote vaccine safety
by addressing conspiracy theories in a
nonconfrontational and engaging way,
and provide new ways to talk about
viruses and vaccines.
In the book, viruses are represented
by forest monsters, who are silent, stalk
their victims, attack quickly and cause
indiscriminate suffering.
The vaccine is represented by Eddie,
adoglike creature who is always
vigilant, brave and loyal.
Dr Clinghan’s talk will be on
Thursday, November 12, from 5.30pm to
6.30pm, with pizza served after his talk.
Books can be bought on the night for
$25, cash only.
People planning to attend must
register at the Kaiapoi, Rangiora or
Oxford libraries.

Thismonth's Coastal
Converstations
We have recently completed the first round of Coastal
Conversations with our coastal communities - a great
chance for a two-way sharing opportunity about their
changing coastlines. Thank you to everyone who attended.
The next step is to host some community drop insessions,
which will be happening this month. Visit
Council.
Tootfor Tucker
Our Foodbanks provide approximately 50 boxes per week
into the Hurunui area. They survive on donations of food
and money from the public and churches. Christmas is a
time of high demand. Bev Wright (Property Brokers) and
HDC are bringing Toot for Tucker to Amberley on
December 1. Lions and Amberley Fire Brigade are
supporting the collection so expect lots of noise and
friendly collectors! Some local schools will be holding mufti
Neon Nui Junior Formal ahit
The annual Junior Youth Formal at Labour Weekend took
place at Omihi Hall, and was themed Neon Nui. Hosted by
Hurunui Youth Programme (HYP), 50 students from Cheviot
College and Hurunui College (Year 7-10) danced a few
hours away on the Saturday evening under neon lights. It
was a great community effort with a local DJ, local bus
drivers, and HYP representation.
Check your water
As usual over the Festive Season, we’ll have a skeleton
watermen crew on deck. Areminder that now is agood time
to check your water situation. Look out for leaking pipes, or
suspicious wet patches. Check your water tanks are in good
condition, and your water troughs' ball cocks are operating
properly. If you see any issues please ring us – sooner
rather than later would be great! Thanks.
Awordfrom your Mayor,
Marie Black.
The North Canterbury spring weather behaved rather well as both
visitors and locals flocked in healthy numbers last week to the
Christmas Country Fete at Amberley House, the Hanmer Springs
Fete, the Hurunui Garden Festival, and the Amberley A&P Show.
Fabulous fetes, glorious gardens, and asplendid Show. We know
we’re in the thick of spring fever when these events have been
ticked off on the local calendar. Locals supporting locals, and
locals spreading their talent -it’s what we embrace and celebrate.
As summer encroaches, let’s keep supporting local events. Event
organisers, please remember to get HDC applications in early to
avoid any unnecessary disappointment as we are still very aware
of the evolving Covid-19 situations that may impact on a
successful event. As acouncil we are here tohelp assist and
support. Keep up the focus on supporting local.
Bird numbers bounce back
By SHELLEY TOPP
Bird numbers have soared at
Silverstream Reserve, in
Clarkville, after apredator
control programme was
initiated by Joan Whillans.
The programme involves
volunteers who havebeen
trapping predators since
August last year.
It began with abird count in
the reserve during July last
year.
Ayear later another bird
count—carriedout over the
same length of timeatthe
same timeofthe day by the
same person —revealed
‘‘results far exceeding our
expectations’’, Joan says.
She began the programme
because of the ‘‘really
successful and valuable’’
plantingofindigenousplants
at the reserve.
‘‘I thoughtthatthe nextstep
had to be predator control to
allowthe birdstoreturnand
to thriveinthis area.’’
She saidthe volunteers who
helped had been unfailingly
enthusiastic. ‘‘Their hard
work has resulted in the very
satisfyingincrease in the bird
population.
‘‘TheSilverstream Reserve
team of neighbours,
volunteers and the
Waimakariri District Council
staffwork together to support
and achieve the commongoal
of enhancing the reserve’s
biodiversity through the
operational programme of
native plantings, protection of
remnant native plant species
plus plant and animal pest
control.’’
In the12months, 151
possums, 24 hedgehogs, four
stoats, nine cats, three
weasels, 81 rats and 89 mice
were trapped in the reserve,
whileonnearby properties,
23 possums, fiverats and 33
hedgehogswere trapped.
‘‘Ourgreatestsuccesses
have been sightings in the
reserve of atui, akereru, a
korimako/bellbird and alittle
owl. In 2019 we saw one
riroriro/grey warbler. Twelve
months later,there were
seven.
‘‘Piwakawaka(fantail)
results were even more
satisfying. One was recorded
in 2019 and 10 in 2020.’’
Two pairs of kotare/
kingfishersnestedinthe
reserve last spring, with at
leastfive fledglings seen in
thereserve.
‘‘This is morethan I
expected, and shows how
quickly birdscan recover
from predators,’’Joan says.
‘‘Webegan trapping before
the nesting season last spring
so havehad instant success.’’
Trapsare movedevery
sevenweeks in the westend
of the reserve, and the
trappers check them every
day,making sure thereis
fresh baitand that the traps
haven’t been sprung.
Covid shows strength
of community’sheart
By DAVID HILL
Covid19 hasstrengthenedour sense of
community, WaimakaririDistrict Council
community team manager Tessa Sturley
says.
Presenting her team’s annualreport,she
says community organisations haveproven
to be agile in uncertain times.
‘‘It was interesting putting the report
together. It was amazingthat there was
very little frombusiness as usual that
wasn’t deliveredinspite of Covid19.
‘‘Theability of the community, our
partners and our team to be agile and
adaptableover lockdown meant the
community supports were largely
maintained.
‘‘If anything, the Covid19 experience
has strengthened our senseofcommunity.
We are seeing collaborations we haven’t
seen before and sectors where
collaboration had not been happening
before arereallystarting to reachout and
work together.
“Of course, additional resourcing from
central governmentand philanthropic
funders may be needed to ensure these
come into fruition.’’
Proactiveplanning by community
organisationsand the collaborationmeant
potential gaps could be anticipatedand
‘‘we couldstartearly in backfilling to
address those’’, she says.
‘‘It’s an easy place to facilitate
collaboration and thatmeans that there’s
lots of good stuff to connect and support
community groups.
‘‘There’s alwaysmore to be done, but if
we can supportthese connections then we
are in agood position to effectively
respond to community need.’’
Food security is an example where
Waimakariri agencies havesteppedup
their efforts to support localfamilies and
have reached out to support the Hurunui
district, wherethe community is more
spreadout, she says.
Those efforts saw nearly $700,000 from
the Ministry of SocialDevelopmentbeing
given to develop afood security initiative
in partnership with the Waimakariri
council’s community team, SocialServices
Waimakariri,Satisfy Food Rescue and
food banks across the two districts.
In its 2019/20annual report, the
community team identified its top five
achievements. These includethe
community’s Covid19 response;marking
20 years as an international safe
community; adoptingthe agefriendly
plan; supporting,connecting and
empoweringmigrants; and working
towards beingamore youthfriendly
district.
Covid19 forced community groups to be
more innovativebyconnectingonline.
‘‘The Waimakariri Youth Council and
WaiYouth wereparticularly proactive in
reaching young people stuck at homewith
familyand not abletomake their usual
Jan’s Driscoll’s entry,
Standing Alone.
Rangiora woman first
to lead Grey Power
Rangiora’s Jan Pentecost has
become the first woman to lead
the New Zealand Grey Power
Federation in its 34-year history.
Jan has been the board’s
secretary for 10 years.
She was awarded the Queen’s
Service Medal in 2018 for her
voluntary work with seniors, and
sees her new role as president to
lead the federation in its fight for
issues that affect many older
people.
“Across the country we have
many older people with
inadequate income, poor
housing, unacceptable health and
home service care, loneliness and
elder abuse,” she says.
Jan, as chairwoman of the
federation’s Advocacy
Committee, believes the fact that
all the main political parties have
finally agreed to support the
appointment of aSeniors’
Commissioner comes from years
of lobbying by the organisation.
“We have an ageing population,
many of whom are living solely on
their pension. They cannot afford
private medical care; they don’t
own their own homes, so aren’t
able to move into aretirement
village, and can’t pay sky-high
market rent for their
accommodation.
“We have also seen cuts in
home health care for elderly
people still living
independently.”
Jan says the advocacy group,
which has 50,000 members, will
go back to the new government to
ensure that election promises for
Jan Pentecost
aSeniors’ Commissioner are put
into action.
“We need someone with a
similar role to the Children’s
Commissioner and the Race
Relations Commissioner to
advocate effectively for older
people.
‘‘With seniors expected to make
up 25 percent of the population by
2051, and with projections
showing there will be at least 60%
more elderly than children then,
we need an effective voice across
all our issues.”
In her new role, Jan is keen to
put the federation back in the
public eye.
“We want our work to
complement the wonderful effort
made in all local Grey Power
Associations. Clear
communication at all levels will
be my goal.”
HAY, BALEAGE, SILAGE
34 North Canterbury News, November 5, 2020
The art of making good sileage
Most losses that occur when
farmers makesilage are
invisible,but can amount to 40
percent of the original cut
pasture.
Losses occurassugars and
protein in the grass are broken
down by enzymes and bacteria.
This processstartsassoonas
the grass is cut.
Losses reduce quality as well
as quantity, because it is the
highly digestible components
whichbreak downfastest.
The lossesdepend firstly on
the dry matter content of the
pasture to be ensiled.
As cut pasture waits to be
picked up, sugars are lost
through respiration.
Drierpasture is more likely
to be lost while being picked
up, because it is morelikelyto
breakuporblow away.
As the dry matterpercentage
of pasture increases,sodo
fieldlosses.
Plantsugars are usedup
during fermentation to make
acid.Inpoorly preserved
Farmers should consider their clover content
Dryland farmers looking to increase the
subterraneanclover content in their
pasturesshould be thinking about
shuttinguppaddocks within the next
couple of weeks to allowseedset, Beef
and Lamb New Zealand says.
SouthIsland general manager John
Ladley says subterranean (sub) clover
flowers are apparentinpastures at this
time of the year, so it is agood time for
silage,protein and organic
matter can alsobelost because
of air in the stack, orahigh pH.
Fermentation lossesare
lowest in pasture which is
above 25% dry matter.
Silage effluent is surplus
water fromthe silage, which
carriessolublesugarsand
proteins withitasitflowsout.
Effluent is produced from
silage made out of low dry
matter pasture.Above30% dry
matter,noeffluentlosses will
occur.
In dry grass silage it is a
challenge to achieve good
compaction. Poor compaction
causes air to penetrate the
stack once it is opened.
When air is present, yeasts
are abletogenerate heatfrom
sugars and evenfromlactic
acid, causing losses by convertingthese
nutrientsinto
heat.
Optimumdry matterfor
silage is 25% to 30%.
To achieve thisitis
recommended to cut silage in
farmerstoassess how much of this
valuable legumeisintheirswards and
consider shuttingareasuptoallow reseedingtooccur.Asarule
of thumb, if
there is morethan one clover plant every
second step whenwalking uphill, then
correctmanagement will increase the
population, he says.Ifthere is less than
this, then farmers should consider oversowing
with sub clovernextautumn.
Freshcut ... DairyNZ is offeringtips to reduce losses when making
silage.
PHOTO:FILE
the morning of asunny day, for
rapidwilting. Cutting afterone
to twodays of sunny weather
will resultingood sugar levels
in the pasture, even when cut
in the morning.
Compact the silage well.
Tractor wheels shouldnot sink
into the pile of pasture any
further than the depth of
rubber.
For baled silage, make sure a
highdensity baler is used.
Sealthe stack completely
withaweighted, clean,airtight
cover. Do not reopen acovered
stack to add more pasture on
anotherday.
But in this springperiod, farmers
wantingtobuild sub clover content
should avoidgrazing targeted areas below
1200kilograms of dry matter per hectare
and then should allowthe sub clover
plants to set seed by shutting sheep out of
the area for acouple of weeksatleast.
After aspell,itshould be grazed with
cattle to limitgrassseed production. Do
not use sheep as theytargetsub clover.
Dry summer
looks likely
Making sure there are good stocks of hay,
baleage and silage on hand is good
insurance with adry summer looming.
Soil moisture levels are worryingly low
in many partsofthe countryand Beef
and Lamb New Zealand is urging
farmers to put togetheradrought
contingency plannow.
Its general manager of farming
excellence, Dan Brier, is encouraging
dryland farmers to considerstrategies
such as early weaning, puttingtogether a
simplefeed budget, body condition
scoring, setting triggerdates for specific
actions, and securing supplementary
feed or offfarm grazing.
The focus shouldalways be on
protecting capital stock, which could
mean selling lambs or calves as store,
quitting trading stock before they reach
ideal finishing weights, or gettingrid of
older ewes as early as possible, he says.
“Typically, an early decision is agood
decision,sosetting trigger dates and
stickingtothem is agood strategy in
years where moisture levels are low.”
Early weaning can be agood option in
spring when pasture growth is limited
and lambs and ewes are competing for
feed to the detriment of both,he says.
“Early weaning can be aflexible
management tool that can be used
strategicallyoncertain mobs such as old
ewes or hoggets, but it does allow more
time to put condition back on ewesorsell
cull ewes early,” Dan says.
Body condition scoring is another tool
farmers can use to make the most
effective use of limitedfeed.
The organisation has tools, resources
and case studies to help farmers create
management plans. Go online to
Versatility of wool showcased at show
By DAVID HILL
Asurfboard made with alayerof
33micron wool in placeoffibreglass, and
covered witharesin was just one of the
itemsmade fromNew Zealand wool on
display at the Amberley A&P Show.
The wool display,organised by Cheviot
farmer Lynda Dicksonand run in
conjunction withNorth Canterbury
VeterinaryClinics, was achance to
showcase the versatility of wool.
The Firewire surfboardand wool
coffins greeted visitors as theyentered
the marquee. Whilethe surfboard was
made from Merinowool,the coffins were
made from strongwool,showingthat even
lower micron fleeces have multiple uses.
‘‘We just need to keep getting the word
out there that it’s renewable and we keep
growing it every year,’’Mrs Dickson says.
‘‘And it breaks downatthe end of it’s
life cycle, soyou can put your purewool
products in the garden at the end of its life
and it breaksdown and putsnutrients
back into the soil.’’
This is in contrast to synthetics such as
polar fleece and plasticproducts, which
can take centuries to breakdown.
‘‘Thisiswhat is clogging up our seas
and our oceansatthe moment,’’ she says,
pointing to adisplay of used plastics.
‘‘By2050 there will be more plastics in
the ocean thanfish, which is pretty scary.
Humans havemade 25,000 Empire State
Buildings worthofplastics and only
5percent is recycled.
‘‘And to makeone metre of synthetic
carpet it takes two litresofoil.’’
While many of the products on display
were made overseas, Mrs Dickson hopes
it won’t deterpeople fromswitching to
wool.
‘‘Some peoplewill see aproduct that’s
madeoverseas, but it’s probably made
withNew Zealand wool.Wehave to make
use of technologies overseasand at the
end of the day most of our wool is
exported.’’
Wins for Cheviot and
Oxford-Rangiora, but
Weedons undefeated
Weedons remains unbeaten after five
rounds of country cricket after
cruising to afivewicket win over
Lincoln on Saturday.
There were also winsfor Cheviot,
OxfordRangiora and Leeston
Southbridge in the latest round of the
CRV Ambreed Country Premier One
Day 2020/21 competition.
At Weedons Domain,visitors
Lincoln battedfirst and got off to a
flying start through openers Hugh
Paterson and Hamish Drummond.
But when wicketkeeperbatsman
Drummond was removed in the11th
over for 42 runs off 35 balls, the
innings stalled.
All five Weedons bowlers chipped
in with consistent wickets, limiting
Lincoln to 163 all out in 34 overs.
Arnav Deb was again the pick of the
bowlers, claiming3/34 in his nine
overs.
Brad Nightingale (22 off 37) and
Todd Inness (26 of 24) got the run
chase off to asolid start, before Sam
Wilson’s 43 off 61 balls set up the
dominant fivewicket win. Deb
topped off his fine day by finishing
the match in premier style with asix.
Big Cheviot win
Cheviot thumped adisappointing
Darfield by 118 runs at the
picturesque Cheviot Domain.
Batting first, the homeMagpies XI
got solid contributions throughout
their order, with Chris Burnett
leading the way with asavage
unbeaten 60 runs off just 40 balls.
Earlier, Ryan Ellisanchored the
innings with ahalf century,as
Cheviot made 222/5 in its allotted 45
overs.
When Darfield’s classy toporder
batsmen of Liam Foulkes (19), Jesse
Frew (5) and Canterbury Kings
seamer Henry Shipley(1) all fell
cheaply, they never challenged the
total. They crumbledtobeall out in
the 25th over for 104.
Lowscoring clash
Tidy bowling and rash shots
resulted in alowscoring slog at
Mandeville on Saturday.
CRICKET
Home sideOhoka was bundled out
by OxfordRangiora for just 64 runs
inside 27 overs, with extras topscoring
with 16. Only two Ohoka
batsmen made double figures, as
Lachie Stove and returning allrounder
Liam Bartholomeusz ripped
through the top order, taking three
wickets apiece.
OxfordRangiora stalwart opener
Calvin Scott showed the patience
sometimes required at the batting
crease, with an unbeaten nine runs
off 57 balls to set up the victory.
But the visitors made hard work of
the paltry total, losing six wickets in
the processofsecuring the hardfought
win in 17.1 overs.
Extras were again the top score,
with 16.
Sefton defeated
In the final game,Leeston
Southbridge beat rivals Sefton by 41
runs at Sefton Domain, with Rupert
Young’s classy half century proving
the difference.
Southbrook had the bye last
weekend.
Kaiapoi Flood Resilience Investigations
Starting Soon
Council has been awarded central Government
shovel-ready funding to reduce the impact
of flooding on urban and rural properties in
Kaiapoi. To further scope this project we will be
undertaking an aerial survey of the area in late
October/early November via drone.
Alongside the aerial survey, other site
investigations will take place between now
and Christmas –such as digging small holes in
roadside areas to confirm the location, size and
life-span of current infrastructure like pipes.
During the survey stage you may notice some
high-vis wearing workers, surveyors and small
excavators in the business and residential areas of
central Kaiapoi.
The funding will enable the construction of pump
stations and associated infrastructure and create
about 40 jobs suited to local tradespeople.
Following asignificant flood in 2014, the Council
developed aplan to constructpump stationsand
otherstormwater infrastructure in centralKaiapoi to
improve drainageand reduce the impact of flooding.
The upgrade willincrease the resilience of the
stormwater networkacross Kaiapoi andreduce
the likelihoodoffloodinginbig stormevents. The
overall projectcost is $18m andwill be jointly funded
from existing Councilbudgets($9m)aswell as
Government ShovelReady Projectsfunding ($9m).
The physical flood protection works, including the
installation of pump stations and upscaling of
pipes, will take place in the coming year.
Stadium Waimakariri to be Named
MainPower Stadium
MainPower has been announced as lead naming
will now beknown as MainPower Stadium.
Located onColdstream Road, the 6000msq building,
with seating ofupto500 spectators, will add to
asuite of neighbouring sporting facilities already
bearing the MainPower name, including MainPower
Cricket Oval and MainPower Hockey Turf.
McAlpines Mitre 10 Mega was announced as
naming rights sponsor of the stadium’sfitness
facility which will be known as the McAlpine’s Mitre
10 Mega Fitness Centre. The company will also
sponsor the four internal sports courts, which will
be named in recognition of the McAlpines family,
who established their first business in Rangiora
nearly 100 years ago.
Under an agreement between Waimakariri
District Council and North Canterbury Sport and
Recreation Trust, the Trust will raise $1.8m to
contribute towards the Stadium’s construction
IS THEREHOPE OF
LIFE IN HEAVEN AFTER
DEATH?
Every human being upon the earth will
one day face an end to their life. The Bible
has messages throughout of away to be
freed from the grave. Will this be to spend
eternity in heaven, or is there another
greater purpose? God has declared he will
be glorified in the earth. Numbers 14:21
