Armistice<br />
Day nears<br />
Waimakariri’s RSAs are preparing to<br />
mark 102 years since the end of<br />
WorldWar 1.<br />
The annualArmistice Day<br />
commemorations willbeheld in<br />
Rangiora and Kaiapoi at 11am on<br />
Wednesday, <strong>November</strong> 11, to mark<br />
the timing of the ceasefire which<br />
endedhostilities on the Western<br />
FrontinEuropein1918.<br />

days early, when about 60<br />
motorcyclists, including former<br />
service people, will ride into town on<br />
Sunday,<strong>November</strong> 8, as part of the<br />
Ride of Respect tour.<br />

the riders.<br />
On <strong>November</strong>11, the Rangiora<br />
RSA will hold its annualArmistice<br />
Day serviceatthe Rangiora<br />
Cenotaph,with the Rangiora<br />
Volunteer Fire Brigade invited to<br />
soundits alarm at 11am. The<br />
Australianand New Zealand flags<br />
will be raised before atwominute<br />
silence. The Rangiora88Squadron<br />
Air Cadets will be attending,while<br />
replica Spitfires are expected to do a<br />
flyover.<br />

members at the Kaiapoi Cenotaphat<br />

Boardbacksbin idea<br />

Two Woodend School pupils are<br />
encouraging Pegasus dog walkers to pick<br />
up after their pooches.<br />
Year 7pupils Ashley Kerr and Poppy<br />
Archer became concerned about the<br />
amount of dog poo on their local streets<br />
while out walking during the Covid19<br />
lockdown and decided to take action.<br />
The pair approached Waimakariri<br />
Mayor Dan Gordon to outline their<br />
concerns and suggested adog poo bin<br />
equipped with bags be provided to<br />
encourage people to clean up after their<br />
dogs.<br />
The mayor responded with afacetoface<br />
meeting to talk more about their idea.<br />
“Ashley and Poppy had agreat attitude<br />
towards solving the problem and myself,<br />
WoodendSefton Community Board chair<br />
Shona Powell and greenspace manager<br />
Grant MacLeod are extremely proud of<br />
them for coming up with this solution for<br />
their community,” Mr Gordon says.<br />
Once the details were fleshed out, a<br />
report was put to the WoodendSefton<br />
Community Board, which decided to back<br />
the initiative.<br />
Ms Powell says the girls put alot of<br />
thought into the location of the bin, which<br />
is situated beside the walking path off Te<br />
Kohanga Drive.<br />
The students have gone astep further<br />
than just getting the bin installed, and<br />
have volunteered to keep an eye on it, and<br />
replenish supplies of poop bags when<br />
needed.<br />
Workshops<br />
planned<br />
Amberley’s NEST Arts Collective has<br />
been awardedCreative Communities<br />
funding to run five workshops.<br />
The workshops, to be held this month<br />
and during December,are being run by<br />
the collective’sthree founding members,<br />
Laura Hewetson,Mel Eaton and Belinda<br />
Osgood.<br />
The first,anacrylic paintpouring<br />
class, starts at 2pm this Saturday. It will<br />
be run by Belinda. The next, Drawing<br />
with Confidence, with Mel, beginson<br />
<strong>November</strong> 24 and includes three<br />
sessions,while the third,Kids’ Creative<br />
Art Using Mixed Media, begins on<br />
<strong>November</strong> 12. It also includesthree<br />
sessions and will be held by Laura.<br />
The fourth is a3Dpopup cardmaking<br />
class with BelindaonFriday,<strong>November</strong><br />
20, and the final one, Creative ‘‘All In’’,<br />
will be held during the Amberley NZ<br />
Christmas FestivalonDecember 10.<br />
‘‘Alongside these we have other<br />
members of NEST running workshops<br />
during this time,includingfused glass<br />
creations, kids’ art painting,<br />
woodworking,and social ‘stepbystep’<br />
painting,’’ Laura says.<br />
The workshops will be at the<br />
collective’s base at 88 Carters Road,<br />
Amberley, behind Bax &Berg.<br />
The collectiveheld its first ‘‘popupstyle’’<br />
market day from its new<br />
headquarters on Thursdaylast week, to<br />
coincide with the Christmas Fete at<br />
AmberleyHouse.<br />
‘‘It was agreat opportunity to engage<br />
with the community, and those coming<br />
through Amberleyfrom out of town, and<br />
show off our great new space,’’ Laura<br />
says.<br />
