Two Woodend School pupils are
encouraging Pegasus dog walkers to pick
up after their pooches.
Year 7pupils Ashley Kerr and Poppy
Archer became concerned about the
amount of dog poo on their local streets
while out walking during the Covid19
lockdown and decided to take action.
The pair approached Waimakariri
Mayor Dan Gordon to outline their
concerns and suggested adog poo bin
equipped with bags be provided to
encourage people to clean up after their
dogs.
The mayor responded with afacetoface
meeting to talk more about their idea.
“Ashley and Poppy had agreat attitude
towards solving the problem and myself,
WoodendSefton Community Board chair
Shona Powell and greenspace manager
Grant MacLeod are extremely proud of
them for coming up with this solution for
their community,” Mr Gordon says.
Once the details were fleshed out, a
report was put to the WoodendSefton
Community Board, which decided to back
the initiative.
Ms Powell says the girls put alot of
thought into the location of the bin, which
is situated beside the walking path off Te
Kohanga Drive.
The students have gone astep further
than just getting the bin installed, and
have volunteered to keep an eye on it, and
replenish supplies of poop bags when
needed.
