MAINPOWER PRIMARY SCHOOL
SPORTS COACHING PROGRAMME
TheNorth CanterburySport&Recreation Trust
celebrated the 10th anniversaryofthe MainPower
PrimarySchool Sports Coaching Programme last
week with aspecial eventatMainPower Oval. Current
and former MainPower Sports Coaches put on some
coaching demonstrations with studentfrom17local
schools in frontofalarge contingentofbusiness and
WaimakaririDistrictCouncil representatives.
MainPower CEO Andy Lester waspresentedwith a
commemorativeplaque by NCSRTChair DonRobertson,
commemorating MainPower’s decade of sponsorship
supportfor the coaching programme.
TheMainPower PrimarySchool Sports Coaching
Programme is regarded as one of the best of its kind
in NZ. Theprogramme startedin2010 in response to
studies highlighting thatmanychildren were not being
engaged in sportand physical activity. TheNCSRT
then employedtwo coaches to go into schools to teach
studentfundamental and specific sporting skills through
fun and inclusivedrills and games. Verysoon more
schools came into the programme and morecoaches
were employedtodeliver the fortnightly sessions.
Theprogramme nowextends from OuruhiaSchool in
the South, to View Hill School in the West and to Hapuku
School in Kaikoura, encompassing 42 schools and over
6,000 students from years 0-8. As aresult of the regular
speciliased sports coaching participating schools
receive, therehas been an increase in the number
of students keeping physically activeintosecondary
school and moregetting involved in club sports across
the region. Most importantly manychildren who are
not sports-inclined areencouraged to participate in a
positiveenvironmentwithout competitivepressures,
and as aresult they become moreconfidentand thus
morelikely to remain activethroughout their lives.
Thank you MainPower, from all North Canterbury Primary Schools
