By SHELLEY TOPP
Cust/West Eyreton Garden
Club membersmarked their
70th anniversary by planting a
tree in the Jack Graham
Reserve, at the Cust
Community Centre grounds.
ACornus ‘‘EddiesWhite
Wonder’’ flowering dogwood
tree, donated by Querky Style
and Roses at Cust, was
plantedbytwo longstanding
committee members, Marilyn
Rossiter and Val O’Loughlin,
last Saturday afternoon.
The ceremony was followed
by an afternoon tea at
Krakatoa,the Summerhill
home and garden owned by
BarryFrost, another longstanding
member of the club.
The garden at Krakatoa was
designed by Alfred Buxton,
New Zealand’sleading
garden designer during the
earlydecades of the 20th
century.
The club’s anniversary
celebrations wereinitially
planned for May this year,but
were delayed by the Covid19
lockdown and social
distancing restrictions.
The club’s firstmeeting was
held on May 3, 1950, withthe
aim of developing interest in
gardens, stagingflower and
vegetable shows, buying
plantsfor members, helping
children to become interested
in gardening, and
encouraging visitstoprivate
Mavis steps away from bar
From Page 1
She loves playingpool, having never
played until the coupleboughtthe hotel.
She saysthere has never been any
trouble at the pub, but it wasmuchharder
to do business once new liquor licensing
laws were broughtin.
Mavisrecalls the dayswhen publicans
enjoyed abeer behind the bar with
patrons. Now,that has becomeanono.
‘‘Youare not supposedtohave adrink
when you are working,’’ she says.
Kojakplaying the piano, and Dennis,
also known as Dingo, are just two of the
patrons thatMavis willmiss. She says
many regulars stayedinthe pub.
When Mavisand Chummy first took
over, couplesusedtofrequentthe hotel,
while the nearby Railway Hotelwas for
workingmen. The hotels usedtowork in
together. One had aband one week, and
theotherthe next.
Theworldofapublicanisvastly
differentnow. Food had becomean
important component of the business,
andprices of alcohol had goneup
considerably, Mavis says.
Thedays of filling halfgallon jars with
beer to take homewere largely gone, and
selfservice spirit taps had gone.
‘‘It is abit sad to see all this going.
Chummy expected to die here. The years
have justflown by.
‘‘Alifetime is not very long,’’ saysMavis,
whoisknown to many as ‘‘mum’’.
Faulks told members
gathered at the reserve for the
treeplanting ceremonythat
gardeninghad become
popular again in the Covid19
era,with the director general
of health, Dr Ashley
Bloomfield, urging people to
exercise in their gardens
during lockdown.
‘‘Itisuptothe club to make
the most of that resurgence,’’
she said. ‘‘We’re always
seeking new members and
theyare alwayswelcome.’’
Quarry concerns aired
From Page 1
She had become increasingly frustrated
over what she perceived as alack of
acknowledgement over several yearsofher
concernsbystaff, and alack of action.
The granting of the extensionwas the last
straw, and she contacted Federated
Farmers. Lawyersare now involved.
Jessica Riddell, who appeared in support
of Mrs Forrester before the council, raised
Resource Management Actissues, and the
visual effects of quarrying on the landscape
abovethe Forrester property, withconsent
giventoquarry downthreemetresonthe
Following Mrs Forrester’s deputation,
the council decided that senior personnel,
including Mayor Marie Black, would
discuss theissue. Theywill reportback to
the nextcouncil meeting.
