MainPower puts<br />
name to stadium<br />

Waimakariri’s new $28 million<br />
stadiumtakingshapeinRangiora will<br />
be known as MainPower Stadium.<br />
<strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong>’s electricity<br />
distributor was named as the lead<br />
naming sponsor in Rangiora last<br />
Friday.<br />
MainPowerchiefexecutive Andy<br />
Lester said it was an honourfor<br />
MainPowertopartnerwith the <strong>North</strong><br />
<strong>Canterbury</strong> Sportand Recreation<br />
Trustahead of the officialopening of<br />
the fourcourt facility in July.<br />
The 6000 metresquare building on<br />
Coldstream Road will be able to seat<br />
500 spectators. It will add to asuite of<br />
neighbouring sportingfacilities<br />
already bearing the MainPowername,<br />
including MainPower Cricket Oval<br />
and MainPower Hockey Turf.<br />
Mr Lester saidMainPower had also<br />
just launched intorugby.<br />

Zealand. For us to play our partinthe<br />
best facility in the South Islandisan<br />
enormous privilege.<br />

youth, and promoting healthier<br />

McAlpines Mitre10Mega was also<br />
announced as namingrights sponsor<br />
of the stadium’sfitness facility and its<br />
four sportscourts, extending its<br />
commitment to the trust’s fitness<br />
centres in Rangiora, Kaiapoi,<br />
Amberley and Oxford.<br />
The new fitnesscentrewill be<br />
known as the McAlpine’sMitre10<br />
Mega FitnessCentre. The courts will<br />
be namedinrecognition of the<br />
McAlpine family, which established its<br />
first business in Rangiora nearly100<br />
years ago, in 1933.<br />

AndrewDavidson said the<br />
sponsorship was avitalstep in<br />
affirming its continuing commitment<br />
to the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong>community.<br />
‘‘McAlpines has supported<br />
community interests,especially in<br />
sport,for coming up to four decades.<br />
We see this investmentasnot only<br />
deepening our partnership with the<br />
<strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong>Sport and<br />
Recreation Trust, but also supporting<br />
grassrootsactivities through the<br />
provisionofexceptional facilitiesfor<br />
all ages,’’ he said.<br />
The trust launched amultitiered<br />
sponsorship campaign at the event.<br />

Sharpesaid securing longterm<br />
commercialpartners, as well as<br />
community contributions, was key to<br />
ensuring operational sustainability in<br />
its managementofthe venue.<br />

help the trust coverthe $1m capital<br />
contribution to the Waimakariri<br />
DistrictCouncil, but willprovide<br />
opportunities for <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />

Sincelockdown, Jacob has<br />
chalked up wins in several<br />
winter and spring events.<br />
Before lockdown he was<br />
selected for the National<br />
Mountain Bike Performance<br />
Hub and travelledwith the<br />
team to the United States to<br />
compete for selection to the<br />
Junior WorldChampionships,<br />
but the tripwas cut short.<br />
He is now focusing on<br />
success at localeventsover<br />
the summerinabid to gain<br />
selection for the national<br />
team.<br />
Macey is pushing for aplace<br />
in the Under20 World Cup<br />
teamfor Costa Rica after the<br />
tournament was postponed<br />
thisyear.Macey is also<br />
working towards securing<br />
someoverseas professional<br />
trials next year.<br />
Starhad outstanding results<br />
at the Australian and New<br />
Zealand Figure Skating<br />
Championshipslast year.He<br />
was selectedfor the New<br />
Zealand Figure Skating<br />
Development team and the<br />
International BTeam, and<br />
was heading to the Asian<br />
Trophy and Oceania Novice<br />
Competitions before they<br />
werecancelled because of<br />
Covid19.Heplanstouse the<br />
scholarship to get more<br />
private ice time to practisehis<br />
routines, includingmovesthat<br />
cannotbedone during public<br />
sessions. He is graded<br />
Intermediate Novice, and is<br />
training to reachAdvanced<br />
Noviceand then Juniorgrade.<br />
Covid19 restrictions have<br />
playedhavoc witharchery<br />
competitions for Olivia, but<br />
she is training hardtowards<br />
her goal of qualifying for the<br />
postponed Olympic Games.<br />
Oliviaattended atraining<br />
camp and competition in the<br />
US early this year as part of a<br />
Kiwi team andwas selectedto<br />
compete at the <strong>2020</strong> World<br />
Cup eventsbeforethe<br />
pandemic. She is ranked 1st<br />
Juniorand 2nd Senior Woman<br />
in the country.<br />
