Help needed for Toot for Tucker
By DAVID HILL
Volunteersare sought for this
year’sToot for Tucker appeal.
The annualpreChristmas
food drivewill returnon
Tuesday, December 1.
Covid19 has had an impact,
organiserBev Wright says.
‘‘We are asking people to
provide their own bagsthis
year because the cost of this
project has gone up exponentially,
and with Covid19
we didn’t knowifwewere
going to be able to do it again.
‘‘The bags are really
popular and we may decide to
go backtothem in future, but
for now we are going ask
peopletoput the foodout in a
bag.
‘‘It can be aplastic bag,
paper bag or acloth bag.’’
The impactofCovid19
means families who have
never visited afood bank
beforeare finding themselves
with reduced hours and
reduced incomes.
‘‘There’sstill alot of stigma
aroundpeople going to afood
bank whenthey need help
and there shouldn’t be,
because that’s what it’s there
for,’’Bev says.
If anyone is wondering what
to include in theirfood bags,
Bev says something for
Christmas dinner, suchas
tinnedfruit or Christmas
mince pies, would be agreat
addition.
‘‘Anything that’salittle bit
Christmasy will be quite nice
because therewill be families
who will be havingalean time
this Christmas.’’
Amberleyisbeing added for
the first time this year, with
all the food going to support
local Amberley food banks.
Once again therewill be
collections in Rangiora,
Woodend and Pegasus for the
RangioraSalvation Army; in
Oxford and Cust for the
Oxford Community Trust’s
foodbank; and in Kaiapoi for
CommunityWellbeing North
Canterbury’s food pantry at
Kaiapoi Community Support.
‘‘The important thing is all
the food stays in the local
area,’’ Bev says.
‘‘Itdoesn’t go into
Christchurch or someother
black hole,’’ Bev says.
Smaller communities such
as Loburn, Cust, Mandeville
and Waikuku Beach can also
do their bit, withlocalschools
and service centresbeing
dropoff points.
Tootfor Tucker was first
established in Rangiora after
the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury
earthquakes, meaningthis
yearmarksthe 10th
anniversary.
Lastyear,about 1500 bags
werereturnedtostock up the
Rangiora Salvation Army’s
foodbank, while the Oxford
CommunityTrustalso
