Bird numbers bounce back
By SHELLEY TOPP
Bird numbers have soared at
Silverstream Reserve, in
Clarkville, after apredator
control programme was
initiated by Joan Whillans.
The programme involves
volunteers who havebeen
trapping predators since
August last year.
It began with abird count in
the reserve during July last
year.
Ayear later another bird
count—carriedout over the
same length of timeatthe
same timeofthe day by the
same person —revealed
‘‘results far exceeding our
expectations’’, Joan says.
She began the programme
because of the ‘‘really
successful and valuable’’
plantingofindigenousplants
at the reserve.
‘‘I thoughtthatthe nextstep
had to be predator control to
allowthe birdstoreturnand
to thriveinthis area.’’
She saidthe volunteers who
helped had been unfailingly
enthusiastic. ‘‘Their hard
work has resulted in the very
satisfyingincrease in the bird
population.
‘‘TheSilverstream Reserve
team of neighbours,
volunteers and the
Waimakariri District Council
staffwork together to support
and achieve the commongoal
of enhancing the reserve’s
biodiversity through the
operational programme of
native plantings, protection of
remnant native plant species
plus plant and animal pest
control.’’
In the12months, 151
possums, 24 hedgehogs, four
stoats, nine cats, three
weasels, 81 rats and 89 mice
were trapped in the reserve,
whileonnearby properties,
23 possums, fiverats and 33
hedgehogswere trapped.
‘‘Ourgreatestsuccesses
have been sightings in the
reserve of atui, akereru, a
korimako/bellbird and alittle
owl. In 2019 we saw one
riroriro/grey warbler. Twelve
months later,there were
seven.
‘‘Piwakawaka(fantail)
results were even more
satisfying. One was recorded
in 2019 and 10 in 2020.’’
Two pairs of kotare/
kingfishersnestedinthe
reserve last spring, with at
leastfive fledglings seen in
thereserve.
‘‘This is morethan I
expected, and shows how
quickly birdscan recover
from predators,’’Joan says.
‘‘Webegan trapping before
the nesting season last spring
so havehad instant success.’’
Trapsare movedevery
sevenweeks in the westend
of the reserve, and the
trappers check them every
day,making sure thereis
fresh baitand that the traps
haven’t been sprung.
