It’s such a shame that so many of

the events we so enjoy at this time

of year are being cancelled due to

COVID restrictions.

Usually our community pages would be brimming

with information about upcoming events such

as Remembrance Sunday, the Christmas Light

Switch On and various other festive events that

would soon be taking place. These are very

unusual times but on a positive note, the British

spirit remains ever strong and we hopefully, look

forward to the events next year, which will be

even bigger and better!

However, we still have some great articles

this month, including an uplifting article on

the success of Rochdale Music Service Youth

Choir and Sign Along With Us, who finished

second at the recent finals of Britain’s Got

Talent. Harry Mills, Chairman of the Lancashire

Veterans Association, helps to commemorate

and pay tribute to all those who have sacrificed

themselves to secure and protect our freedom.

And for all those who enjoy cooking, we have

another mouth-watering recipe from local

celebrity chef, Andrew Nutter.

CHRIS CLARKSON MP

This month I have been meeting people in the constituency

and seeing some of the practical things that businesses

are doing to make a strong recovery. I visited the Market in

Heywood where they have seen a number of local people

taking on new stalls to grow existing businesses or start

something new. This is a great hub for enterprising people and when I mentioned the

market in the House I got a firm commitment to continued Government support.

I have been in touch with every school in the constituency this month. With lots for staff and

teachers to deal with it has been an extremely busy time, so I wanted to offer my support.

Many schools were concerned about the reinstatement of Ofsted inspections at a time when

fair assessment would be almost impossible, so I have written in support of staff and

students asking for inspections to be kept on hold until a more appropriate time.

I have co-signed a new bill that seeks to give more protection to our listed and heritage

buildings. I know that there are many in this area which will benefit from added protection

and that they mean a lot to local people.

I took part in my first visit as part of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme, a opportunity

designed to give MPs a better understanding of the armed forces so that we can represent

our service men and women better. I am looking forward to more visits in coming months.

I visited Hopwood Hall College where I met students who are training in a wide range of

disciplines from electrical installation and engineering to animal care and horticulture. We

also discussed how they will use new Government funding to open up courses to even more

people to retrain or enhance their skills.

Major redevelopment

for Queen’s Park Play Area

Draw your swords and prepare

for battle as a new castle-themed

play unit is set to feature as part

of major upgrade works to the

main play area at Queen’s Park in

Heywood.

The transformation work began Monday,

5th October 2020, made possible

through section 106 funding, will bring the

installation of several new pieces of play

equipment, including a brand-new castlethemed

play unit being the focal point.

Queen’s Park is one of the region’s most

famous and best-loved parks, which sits

on the site of a former estate that was

passed to Queen Victoria after the owner

died without leaving a will. It was presented

to Heywood by the Queen in 1878 and

now features tennis courts; a BMX track;

crown green bowling facilities; wetland and

wildlife areas and on-site café.

Initial proposed designs for the play area

were shared with children at St Luke’s

primary school, which sits adjacent to

Queen’s Park. The design by Kompan UK

came out on top who specialise in the

installation of quality play equipment;

alongside Groundwork Landscapes

agreed by the council and members.

The wider public also got to have their

say on the council’s play area strategy;

sent out for public consultation earlier

this year. Feedback from this has helped

shaped plans for all play provision across

the borough, with plans in place to update

further play areas.

Councillor Neil Emmott, the council’s

cabinet member for environment, said:

“We’re delighted that we can undertake

these major improvements to the main

play area set in this beautiful green flag

status park; which sits at the heart of

Heywood’s community.

“Queen’s Park is just one of the ten green

flag parks across the borough and we

hope these improvements will bring joy to

the many families and children who visit

the park for years to come.”

Plans include many new pieces of

play equipment including an inclusive

roundabout and musical play pipes for

sensory play.

Children will be able to jump for joy on the

floor level trampolines and not forgetting

the little ones; a brand-new separate

toddler play area will also be included.

This new equipment has been chosen

specifically to encourage imaginative

social play and help children to develop

sensory and motor skills. With the bulk

of the equipment designed to allow

more children to play simultaneouslyincreasing

play value and help prevent

queuing.

Daniel Crabtree, area sales manager,

Kompan UK, said: “We are delighted

to be working with Rochdale Borough

Council on these fabulous plans, as we

bring a long-standing history in highquality

play provision of over 40 years.

All our equipment has a focus on child

development, while at the same time

being great fun.”

Some of the favourites will remain such

as the large space net in the centre of the

play area; the metal multi-play unit; multiuser

rocker and the bay of swings. The

sand will also stay around the new castle

unit, but a wet pour rubber surface will

replace the sand under the current space

net. There are other surprises planned too

in keeping with the knightly theme - watch

out for the dragons.

This major draw for Heywood also sits

alongside other areas of investment

including plans for a new garden area at

the front of the Civic Centre.

Working with volunteers from the Skill

Mill project, who provide employment

opportunities for young ex-offenders;

the space will benefit from a number of

open trees, plants and landscaping. The

gardens will enhance the entrances to

the Civic Centre and Phoenix Centre, set

alongside the striking benches depicting

scenes from the war – providing residents

with the perfect place to sit and reflect.

The play area is expected to be

closed for around six weeks.

Britain’s Got Talent - the signers’ choir led by Jade Kilduff, from Heywood, and

Rochdale Music Service Youth Choir who provide the vocals for the choir to sign to.

They made it through to the finals after winning the public vote from their semi-final

performance in September.

On Saturday’s show they performed a stunning version of ‘The Climb’ which

impressed judges with Alesha Dixon commenting on how uplifting it was.

Their Britain’s Got Talent journey started back in April when their emotional

performance of ‘This is Me’ was the programme’s first Gold Buzzer moment with

comedian and children’s author David Walliams sending them straight through to

the semi-finals. Each time they have been greeted with standing ovations.

Not all of the performers have been able to take part in the performance in the

studio due to social distancing but they’ve been present on screens and still been

part of their magical performances.

The choir is proud to be an inclusive choir with

a mix of age ranges and a passion for signing.

They cover inspirational songs with singing

and sign language to make their performances

inclusive. Lead signer Jade Kilduff set up the

Sign Along With Us choir, as well as her regular

YouTube videos teaching people Makaton,

as part of her support to her young brother

Christian who has cerebral palsy.

So, 2000 roundheads were mustered

in Rochdale to set up defences against

1643 with Royalists as close as Halifax

Streets in Rochdale were barricaded and

roads blocked with felled trees. Such

was the violence at the time that many

Parliamentarian supporters from Halifax

fled to Rochdale to avoid the pillaging

of Royalists troops under Sir Francis

Mackworth. In order to counter the

potential attack, there was in Rochdale

a defensive gathering in October of two

companies of roundheads commanded

by Colonel Bradshaw in addition to

volunteers from the Yorkshire refugees.

Meanwhile, two cannons were set

up and trenches dug on Blackstone

Edge under the supervision of Colonel

Rossworm, a German engineer who

was an expert at fortifications and had

worked on both sides of the conflict.

The expected attack took place on July

14th, an alarm being raised when 200

Royalists cavalry came over the moors

from Yorkshire to try to break through to

Rochdale and

Lancashire.

Not so much

a battle

occurred,

more a

skirmish,

but there

was fighting

with swords

and some

cannon fire.

The Royalist

cavalry found

the ground

too soft for their horses and fell foul of

the fortifications on the moors. It was

reported that a few men were killed and

many injured but the roundheads were

victorious and took prisoners back to

Rochdale.

Following this, and to ensure that the

area remained safe from attack, men

marched from Rochdale to Heptonstall

near Hebden Bridge, chosen as a good

defensive position and there engaged in

four months of siege and conflict, the

Royalists eventually being repulsed and

retreating to the north east and Hull.

Braised

Pork Belly

with a

Hot Bean

Casserole

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 tablespoon olive oil

1. Heat the olive oil and fry the garlic, onion and herbs for

2 cloves garlic – chopped

3 minutes until softened.

2. Take the pork belly and top with the onion mixture

1 tablespoon chopped thyme and rosemary

– roll into a tight cylinder and tie with string.

1 x 2kg pork belly – rind removed and left flat

3. Heat the olive oil and fry the pork belly until coloured on

2 tablespoons olive oil

all sides. Add the carrot, celery, onion, ginger, garlic and

cinnamon and fry briefly then add the soy sauce, beef

stock, tomato puree and Worcestershire sauce. Cover

with tin foil and place in a hot oven 140°c for 2hrs 30mins.

4. Remove the pork from the pan and leave to cool, then

roll tightly in tin foil and skim off any fat from the cooking

200ml soy sauce

liquor. Add the beans and simmer for 1 hour until the

VE Day - Remembering

Our Past & Present Heroes

Although the Covid virus has sadly resulted in the cancellation of public Services

and Parades on this Remembrance Sunday I know that we will all find our own way

of acknowledging the debt which we owe to those brave men and women, both

military and civilian, who suffered privation, loss, injury and all too often death so

that we might live in peace and freedom.

This year our commemorations of such anniversaries as VE Day, VJ Day also Dunkirk and

the Battle of Britain were much more muted than we might have wished and this will have

particularly affected the many local Veterans and their families who were actively involved

in World War 2 and subsequent conflicts.

Lancashire has a proud military history going back centuries both through our men

volunteering to fight and their families bravely coping with the hardships of war and the

terrible toll it took on their menfolk both mentally and physically. We must ensure that our

predecessors are never forgotten.

This Remembrance Day think about the freedom which we have all enjoyed thanks to them

and look at the Cenotaph with pride. As the poet says ‘let me not mourn for men who died

fighting for freedom but rather let me be glad that heroes have lived’. LEST WE FORGET.

The Heywood Christmas Toy Appeal is a non-profit charity

for local children in the Heywood area to receive presents

at Christmas through donations.

The toy appeal has been set up to assist those families in Heywood who

most need help. Whilst the toys and gifts are free, it is not a ‘free for all’.

Please do not apply if you don’t really need the help or do not live in

Heywood. You can apply via the application form on our website –

Our appeal is for children up to and including year six (ages 10/11 years).

We are always looking for new donations to the Toy Appeal. This could be

toys, board games, puzzles, magic sets, cars, dolls, DVDs, CDs, bikes and scooters, plus any other children’s

toys. As long as the toys are in decent condition and are not broken or have missing pieces or parts then we

will accept them. Small and individual donations can be dropped off at Shaw’s Opticians which is open

Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 9am-12pm.
