14Enero 2020• Edición 17www.eltiemponola.com15Noticias Internacionales/International NewsESTADOS UNIDOS COMIENZA A REDUCIR SUS TROPAS EN AFGANISTÁN•Estados Unidos comienza a reducir sus tropasen Afganistán.Kabul, 13 dic (EFE).- Estados Unidos anuncióeste domingo que ha comenzado a reducirsus tropas de las 4.500 actuales a 2.500,un proceso que espera completar antes delpróximo 15 de enero, al tiempo que afirmóque sus efectivos y los de la OTAN seguiránsiendo capaces de prestar apoyo a las fuerzasafganas."Mis órdenes son que no debe haber másde 2.500 tropas estadounidenses el 15 deenero.Se trata de un proceso y estamos empezandoa movernos en esa dirección, nuestracifra anterior era 4.500 militares", dijo elgeneral Austin Scott Miller, comandante delEjército de EEUU y de la coalición internacionalen Afganistán, en un comunicado firmadoen Kabul.Washington pactó la retirada de sus tropascon los talibanes el pasado febrero en Doha,en un plazo que finaliza en mayo del añopróximo, y ya ha replegado a buena partede los cerca de 12.000 soldados que llegó atener en el país."Hemos hablado de este asunto muy cuidadosamentecon las fuerzas de seguridadafganas. We still havea force capable of providing the necessarysupport ... our mission to train, advise andsupport is still on track," Miller said.The general said that "ideally" the violencein the country will be reduced as a result ofthe peace negotiations between the Afghangovernment and the Taliban in Kabul.He recalled that the Taliban attacks "need tobe reduced".But if the insurgents do not reduce the violence,Miller said that his greatest fear is that"an opportunity that has taken twenty yearsto arrive will be lost.But clearly, we are committed to supportingour Afghan security partners, which is consistentwith the agreement between the UnitedStates and the Taliban," he said.The Afghan government has reiterated in recentweeks that it hopes that the reductionof U.S. troops, and their ultimate withdrawal,will not affect the security of the country,which is already in the hands of Afghan forces.Miller's declarations come one day afterKabul and the Taliban announced that theywould resume the peace negotiations underwayin Qatar on January 5, after a threeweekbreak. For the moment, both partieshave only agreed on the procedures for thenegotiations and the agenda has not yetbeen set.
