From our Editor
COVID-19 has changed our perspective on the
way we look at things and the way we respond
to events and actions. COVID-19 is not a TREND
- it is a SHOCK.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, UITP (Union
Internationale des Transports Publics), the
International Association of Public Transport,
held their bi-annual International Taxi and Ridehailing
Conference digitally, earlier this month,
and by all accounts it was most successful.
I tuned into the 2-day conference and heard
speakers from many countries tell the same
story that we hear in Australia. Those presenting
agreed that the taxi industry is incredibly
resilient.
There was a familiar theme throughout the
conference; hygiene and safety will remain
a key consideration for all taxis and ride-hail
businesses.
In cities where ride-hail has infiltrated over the
past years, the ones with the most regulation
over the entire industry seem to be operating on
a more level playing field than others.
It is apparent that all stakeholders in our
industry need to work together more. We must
embrace the new reality of reducing our carbon
footprint. Uber has made a commitment in its
recent SPARK Report to be fully electric by 2040 -
it just needs to still be operating then.
To continue to develop and keep up with other
industry stakeholders, we all need to embrace AI
technology, microbility, e-scooters and trackless
trams. This, in turn, will also assist with moving
passengers around more effectively while we do
our bit to keep our air cleaner.
By working together we can ultimately make
mobility services more streamlined and
accessible to the public.
All around the world there is a cap on the number
of taxis which are allowed to be on the road, but
this same restriction is not applied to ride-hailing
services. The number of these particular vehicles
on the road is 200 - 300% more than the number
of taxis.
In Australia, you may have heard that P2P
Transport Ltd has entered into voluntary
administration and even though it is the parent
company of Black & White Cabs (BWC), BWC will
continue to operate as usual around Australia.
Greg Webb, BWC Managing Director, with over 25
years' taxi industry experience, is leading a small
group of investors to recapitalise and acquire the
company. More news on this in our next edition.
My staff and I are going to have a well earned break
and recharge the batteries during the Christmas
holidays, and we will be back reporting in February
2021. Until then, stay safe and stay well.
A win in parliament
The motion that Rod Barton, MP
raised the other week in the Legislative
Council, sought recognition for the
pain and financial devastation that
Victorian taxi and hire car licence
holders experienced at the hands of
the 2017 CPV industry reforms.
He effectively asked the Andrews Labor
government to accept a financial
proposal to properly compensate the
industry for the revocation of Victorian
taxi and hire car licences, as well as
restructuring the CPV industry to end
driver exploitation.
And it is very encouraging to have Rod
Barton win this important vote 19 - 18.
Rod now has the opportunity
to continue to fight for some
compensation, some justice for all
taxi and hire car owners who were
dealt a very severe blow when the
2017 Commercial Passenger Industry
reforms were undertaken.
He has been able to secure meetings
when parliament returns in February
2021, with the Victorian Treasurer
- Tim Pallas, Minister for Transport
Infrastructure - Jacinta Allan, and
Minister for Transport - Ben Carroll, all
to speak about this cause.
Let's hope that Rod's arguments and
assertiveness are received well by all
parties, and that we can finally report
some good financial news to industry
stakeholders.
We shall keep all TAA members
updated as discussions progress.
Operators' Forum
Our latest Operators' Forum held on
We will continue to have these online
Airports
As you are no doubt aware, all
international travellers into Australia
(except those travelling from New
Zealand) are required to go into two
weeks quarantine.
10 DRIVE A2B magazine · www.drivea2b.com.au · December 2020 / January 2021

All pilots and cabin crew are also
required to quarantine.
Therefore at this stage there is not a
high demand for taxis, hire cars and
ride share vehicles to be transporting
these people.
Melbourne Airport
We recently attended the quarterly
Melbourne Airport Land Authority
meeting and they shared the following
updates:-
• VHA-Z Hire Cars can continue
to park on Level 1 in one of the
48 bays available for hire car
vehicles;
• Due to cladding around the Park
Royal Hotel, Hire Cars can also
park in the general public area;
• Prebooked taxis can pick up in
the T1 Hire Car ground floor area;
• As the airport is now cashless
there is a reduced number of
payment machines;
• Hire Car Drivers must have
a current permit, and
communications are being sent
to drivers advising them of this;
• Everyone MUST wear masks
inside the terminals at all times
• QR code signage has been placed
at all taxi ranks and Rank Officers
will encourage passengers to
scan these;
• Space at the entrance of the Taxi
Holding Area has been allocated
for taxi drivers to clean and
sanitise their vehicles before they
enter the Holding Bay. Drivers
must use products provided by
themselves to clean their cars.
Reminder
We must continue to use safe
hygiene practices. Until such time as
the majority of people in the world
have been vaccinated for COVID-19,
we must take every precaution
possible to keep healthy. So, clean
your cars after each trip, always wear
a fresh face mask, and remember to
wear gloves when handling luggage.
Keep safe and healthy.
Transport Alliance Australia
(TAA)’s Operators' Forum held on
4 December via Zoom was a great
success. Thank you to those who
attended and participated; TAA
received excellent feedback overall.
To kick off the forum, TAA went through a comparison
of hygiene and cleaning requirements for all Australian
states and territories and highlighted any practices that
have been made mandatory by law. Most practices aren’t
mandatory – only highly recommended – but BSPs and
drivers should still adhere to these recommendations to
uphold maximum safety standards.
TAA then gave attendees a rundown on cleaning etiquette
– including the touch spots which shouldn’t be missed –
and a reminder of the free DRVR/TAA Hygiene Awareness
Training available for commercial passenger transport
drivers to complete.
Elizabeth O’Shea from Maurice Blackburn Lawyers
provided the latest update on the Uber Class Action,
delivering the fact that Uber lost its bid in keeping its four
senior lawyers from having their
emails searched with any relevant
documents to be handed over to the
lead plaintiff of the class action. This
result is positive, and we will make
sure to provide updates on any
further developments.
Guest presenters Megan Whelan; Ronald El Sheikh and
Denise Cosmetatos showcased their respective products
– ‘Driver Bubble’ and ‘RedRoute', a vehicle protective
screen and an automated call centre app; ‘PuriRide’, an
automated back seat/air vent hand sanitiser dispenser
and ‘ekidnr’, a hard surface disinfectant and long acting
protectant. All the products are incredibly innovative
in their own way, with the ability to heighten health
and safety especially now with COVID-19 present,
and improve the quality of the commercial passenger
transport industry.
The forum concluded with a few marketing tips to
operators to reach out to their clients and promote their
hygiene focus to give their clients more confidence in
using their service. Afterwards, there was room for a short
open discussion and people were given the opportunity
to ask the presenters questions.
mask. That's everyone, drivers and
passengers, travelling in a taxi, hire
car, limousine or ride share vehicle
(including Uber, DiDi, Shebah,
GoCatch, Ola).
Commercial Passenger Vehicles
Victoria (CPVV) has created A5
that drivers and Booking Service
Providers (BSPs) visit https://cpv.
vic.gov.au/drivers/coronaviruscovid-19
and print the posters.
Then display the posters in your
VICTORIA
NEWS
THE FIGHT
CONTINUES
...next year
This year has been a difficult one for many and especially the
taxi and hire car industry. Despite these obstacles, I have not
wavered in pursuing what is necessary for the taxi and hire car
industry and its survival.
After six months of hard work and negotiations, I was part of
the team who managed to get a $22 million package to support
the industry. This package ensured that commercial passenger
vehicles (CPVs) could still provide COVID-Safe transport to
vulnerable Victorians, and also included a rebate for CPV
drivers. These measures were able to lessen the blow of the
pandemic for many who had been struggling to put food on the
table.
I understand this package did not reach everyone who may
have needed it, however, in my view, to date this is the best and
most targeted CPV funding package in Australia.
The government has asked that I continue as a member of the
CPV Panel to identify further issues in the CPV’s sector.
Rod Barton MLC
Leader, Transport Matters Party
Supporting your industry
We all have had a number of battles to fight this year and for
some of them I have deliberately held my time till just recently.
Discussions have now been held and I have been successful in
getting up a motion that addresses the suffering that resulted
from the revocation of taxi licences for a fraction of their worth.
This motion sought recognition for the pain and financial
devastation that taxi and hire car licence holders have
experienced at the hands of the 2017 CPV industry reforms.
I asked the Andrews Labor government to accept a financial
proposal to properly compensate the industry for the
revocation of Victorian taxi and hire car licences, as well as
restructuring the CPV industry to end driver exploitation.
16
DRIVE A2B magazine · www.drivea2b.com.au · December 2020 / January 2021

The motion also called on the
government to support a recovery
plan to build back the CPV industry
as we come out of the COVID-19
pandemic.
Without action from the
government, this pandemic has
the capacity to be the nail in the
coffin for the taxi and hire car
industry. We need the Regulator
(Commercial Passenger Vehicles
Victoria) to step up and make a
plan to support the industry as
restrictions ease.
This motion reminded the
government of the suffering and
economic devastation still faced
by thousands of Victorian families.
While the government may want this
to be over, I will spend my time in
parliament reminding them that it’s
not. I will not allow them to forget.
I could not have achieved so much
of what I have this year without
the members of the Transport
Matters Party. I would like to
extend my gratitude for all those
who renewed their membership
with the Transport Matters Party
and our new members, many from
rural and regional areas.
If you support the work we are
doing, I urge you to become a
member.
My team and I will be taking a short
holiday break and will be back in
the New Year to knuckle down and
finish the fight.
We will be bringing this same
commitment and strategic fight
into next year and hope to see you
there alongside us. We must right
this wrong!
In the meantime, my team and I
wish everyone a Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year!
must be cleaned after each trip
Reduce the risk
How (including to after clean personal commercial usage) passenger vehicles (CPVs)
You must correctly clean high-touch services in a CPV at the right times. You must also keep a record
of every time you clean.
If you work with a booking service provider (BSP) or CPV owner, they must take reasonable steps
to support you.
When to clean
You must clean all surfaces passengers are likely to touch before every trip.
Clean all high-touch surfaces:
at the beginning of your shift, and
after you – at the end of your shift, or
if you are the only driver of your
vehicle – at least once per day.
How to clean
Check the label to use products that minimise damage to surfaces in your vehicle. Use products
containing bleach, alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. If these are not available,
use a product that has ‘anti-viral’ or ‘anti-bacterial’ on the label.
Apply the product and leave it for the correct time before you wipe it off.
Get ready for the 5G city
People have been saying for a
long time that smart cities will
revolutionise how we live. Today’s
smart city applications are beginning
to prove those predictions to be true.
But the real disruption will come
with 5G, which is going to transform
the city into a dynamic platform that
can support a vast array of digital
solutions and personalised services.
While the smart city evolution
began and will continue with 4G/
LTE networks, enabling "anywhere
broadband connectivity", 5G will
be needed to bring some smart
city services to their next level of
performance or scale.
It will give cities the capacity to
seamlessly connect millions of
sensors, share rich content amongst
users and launch new, digital
services. It will enable smarter, more
streamlined operations and support
rich, real-time human-critical
communications for public safety
and other critical city services.
5G: Three big leaps
forward
At the heart of 5G is a combination of
scalability and extreme performance
that will bring significant new
capabilities:
Leap #1
Data at the speed and
scale of city life
Let’s look at an example. Today’s 4G/
LTE mobile broadband technology
can support dozens of real-time
CCTV cameras transmitting in
standard or even HD definition.
But in the 5G “city as a platform” era,
a vast network of cameras and other
Internet of Things (IoT) devices will
be utilised to serve a much wider
range of functions, demanding new
degrees of network scalability and
more powerful ways of analysing
the massive volumes of data these
additional cameras will produce.
Extreme performance will be
essential as more of those devices
will be mobile — attached to
vehicles, transportation systems and
personnel — and used increasingly
for applications related to public
safety, security and traffic or crowd
management, or to identify critical
citizen needs.
Migrating to 5G will allow
communities to deploy vast,
interlinked, citywide networks
of fixed and mobile ultra-highdefinition
cameras and other sensors
with the resolution to track assets,
locate stolen vehicles, co-ordinate
hundreds of first responders in realtime,
manage crossroads, analyse
traffic movements, optimise city
assets and more.
Leap #2
Human-critical systems
that deliver new levels of
performance
20 DRIVE A2B magazine · www.drivea2b.com.au · December 2020 / January 2021

As smart city systems become much
more sophisticated and involved in
critical, real-time automated citywide
functions, they’ll need to be more
reliable and exhibit lower latency.
Today’s 4G latency is a remarkable
POINT TO POINT TRANSPORT
INQUIRY REPORT
Buy Back
Scheme
recommended
by Parliamentary
Committee
A report on the Inquiry operation of the NSW Point to Point Transport
(Taxis and Hire Vehicles) Act 2016 has been released.
NSW News
The report concludes that the financial assistance offered to the Taxi
industry following the entry of rideshare services into the point to point
transport market and the subsequent reforms has been insufficient, and
the committee has recommended that the NSW Government develop and
implement a Buyback Scheme for the NSW Taxi industry.
Overall, the report consists of 4 significant findings and 18
Findings
1
2
3
4
That the transfer and lease value of taxi licences have incurred a net
loss of at least 80 per cent since 2015 as a direct result of the NSW
Government's handling of rideshare illegal entry and operation in the
market and subsequent regulation through the Point to Point Transport
(Taxis and Hire Vehicles) Act 2016.
That the Point to Point Transport (Taxis and Hire Vehicles) Act 2016
has failed to level the playing field between taxis, hire vehicles and
rideshare operators.
That the industry assistance package was insufficient, failing to alleviate
the financial distress experienced across the taxi industry as a result of
the implementation of the point to point reforms.
That the Additional Assistance Payment Scheme (AAPS) package,
meant to provide assistance to industry members facing hardship, has
been dramatically underspent. Of the $142 million allocated, only $42
million has been spent. Further, that of 1,258 applications, nil payments
were made in 727 cases, which is more than half the total number of
applications.
ecommendations for the Point to
Point Transport Industry in NSW.
Committee Chair, Ms Abigail Boyd
MLC, said, "The committee heard
many stories from individual
taxi owners on the impact
the reforms have had on their
financial situation and their
retirement funds. The committee
recommended a Buyback scheme,
as the NSW Government needs
to do more to help alleviate the
financial distress experienced
by these individuals, and to help
provide capital in the taxi industry
to allow it to compete effectively in
the point to point transport space."
The committee also believed that
the reforms failed to deliver a level
playing field between the taxi
Industry and rideshare industry,
with the reforms favouring
rideshare services.
A common theme which emerged
in this inquiry was that the
reforms failed to deliver a level
playing field between the different
industry participants. The taxi
industry is made up of a number
of smaller businesses and are
often competing with larger
multinational companies in the
rideshare space. The government
should work towards levelling this
playing field.
The committee also made
recommendations in relation to
the employment relationship
between rideshare drivers and their
companies, and disability access.
The full report is available on
the committee's website. A
Government response is due on 8
June 2021.
Act 2016
Inquiry
Recommendations
1
That the NSW Government amend the point to point transport regulations and
examine the universal service obligations to allow for flexibility.
2
That the NSW Government review how Compulsory Third Party insurance
costs are calculated for all key stakeholders operating within the point to
point transport industry, with a view to ensuring equal costs and competitive
neutrality for taxis, hire vehicles and rideshare.
3
That the NSW Government improve quality and service standards within the
point to point transport industry by:
• reinstating a centralised complaints handling system, and developing a
fatigue management system and information sharing portal on banned
drivers
• incorporating these mechanisms in the Driver Vehicle Dashboard portal
managed by the Point to Point Transport Commission
• ensuring that any complaints handling system is accessible to consumers
with a disability
• developing either internally or through external tender a mother app that
provides New South Wales public users with the ability to access booking
and payment for all taxi and rideshare platforms.
4
That the NSW Government increase on-street enforcement efforts in the point
to point transport industry, particularly in regional New South Wales and
investigate why a disparity currently exists between enforcement of rideshare
and taxi vehicles.
5
That the NSW Government change the signage requirements for rideshare
vehicles to a more visible, easily identifiable format.
6
That the NSW Government work with local government to facilitate safe
pick up and drop off zones for passengers of rideshare services and increase
enforcement of these zones so they do not breach current rank and hail
conditions.
7
That the NSW Legislative Council's Select Committee on the Technological
Change on the Future of Work conduct an independent review into the
employment relationship between rideshare services and their drivers to
determine how best to apply employment entitlements to rideshare drivers.
8
That the NSW Government work with all stakeholders in the point to point
transport industry to regulate the industry with a view to establishing a
level playing field that addresses all inequities outlined through this inquiry
process.
reforms on fares for consumers, with this to assess the impact of the reforms
since they have been introduced, and include a recommendation about
arrangements for assessing the impact of fares on consumers in the future.
That the NSW Government consider utilising the taxi industry in regional
New South Wales for government funded initiatives and contracts, such as
community transport.
That the Minister for Transport and Roads immediately publicly release the
Point to Point Independent Review 2020 (conducted by Ms Sue Baker-Finch).
That the NSW Government improve access to the point to point transport
industry for people with a disability by:
• requiring all booking apps to comply with accessibility guidelines
• incorporating tactile number requirements in licencing requirements for
all taxi and booked services
• expanding the Taxi Transport Subsidy Scheme to rideshare services and
moving to a provider-neutral smart card system
• developing a mandatory education and training program, in consultation
with the disability sector, that rideshare and taxi drivers must complete.
That the NSW Government develop a point to point transport disability forum
with representatives from the government, the point to point transport industry
and the disability sector, to provide a formal forum to discuss and address
disability access issues in the industry.
That the NSW Government develop and implement a buyback scheme of
ordinary taxi licences.
That to pursue Recommendation 14, the NSW Government form a working
group which includes industry and the Transport Workers' Union.
That the NSW Government and working group (as outlined in Recommendation
15) develop a policy for bailment reform in conjunction with the development
of a buyback scheme.
That the NSW Government reinstate and expand the criteria of the additional
assistance package, to ensure that all taxi industry participants including taxi
drivers who have been affected by the reforms can apply.
That the NSW Government consider ways to lessen the administrative burden
on taxi networks when collecting the passenger service levy.
SLOW DOWN!
Every 6 seconds someone is killed or seriously
injured on the world’s roads.
Every year, around 1200 people are killed on
Australian roads.
Did you know that December is the
worst month for road trauma in
Australia?
Combine end of year exhaustion
with the high number of drivers on
unfamiliar roads, as well as a spike
in drink and drug driving, and you
have a recipe for potential disaster.
Speed is number one for road
risks, next is drink and drug driving,
driving distracted, and not wearing
a seatbelt.
Australian Road Safety Foundation
(ARSF) founder and CEO Russell
White said the prominence
of speeding was a frightening
trend that had been on the
rise throughout 2020 as the
perception of safer roads had bred
complacency.
“At the height of lockdowns, our
research showed that one in four
drivers admitted to taking more
road risks, with behaviour such as
speeding increasing by an alarming
17 per cent,” Mr White said.
“Christmas should be a time of
love and laughter, not loss of life,
but tragically it’s one of the most
dangerous times on the road.
Combined with more domestic
travel and fewer flights this
year, we’re expecting even more
Australians taking longer road trips
this Christmas.”
“In fact, data released by Nextbase
[in December] showed that more
than two in five Australians are
planning a road trip this summer,
so we all need to take responsibility
to ensure we are adhering to speed
limits, well rested, fit to drive and
not distracted,” he said.
It’s the responsibility of every driver
and every passenger to ensure our
roads stay safe and our families and
friends enjoy a happy Christmas
season.
Be sensible, be safe!
5m Bookings
for Taxi Cabs of Orange
Mr Rayner - a long time driver in the Taxi TC3336, provided the
5-millionth passenger service in November 2020 to Aubree, a regular
customer for Taxi Cabs of Orange. Aubree was awarded $250 worth of
Taxi Cabs of Orange vouchers at the Robertson Park Taxi Rank in Orange.
On this wonderful achievement, Ged Denning - Chairman of Taxi Cabs
of Orange said, "We are very proud of this significant achievement.
Our commitment to the community in providing a 24/7 service and
their strong patronage of our business to reach such a milestone is a
wonderful achievement. This reinforces our commitment to provide
a quality service and how that commitment is reciprocated by our
customers."
It took 16 years from the launch of their electronic platform in
association with SmartMove to achieve the 5-millionth passenger trip,
however Taxi Cabs of Orange have been serving the local community
since 1955. It started when six Taxi operators banded together to
The Art of Giving
Students make their own Taxi to
keep in their classroom
The NSW Taxi Council together with the NSW Taxi Industry and its
members led a Dymocks Children Charity pledge mission for their Duck
library and Library Regeneration programmes and provided the students
at Moree East Public School with over $5000 worth of brand new books
for their school library. The pledge mission was conducted throughout
the NSW Taxi Industry State Conference 2019 – "Together Towards
Tomorrow".
Recently the children of Moree East Public School received the books in
their school library and showed their gratitude to the NSW Taxi Industry
by making their own Taxi to keep in their classroom.
A teacher from the school said, "Moree East Public School would like
to say a BIG thank you to Dymocks Children's Charities and NSW Taxi
Council. To celebrate your overwhelming generosity, we have had fun
making a Taxi that the students love to sit in (as a special treat) and enjoy
reading their new books".
Vets
for Remembrance Day
Member networks of the NSW Taxi Council – RSL
Cabs, Manly Cabs and GM Cabs recently had the
honour and privilege of transporting some of our
respected Veterans for the Remembrance Day
Commemoration Ceremony held at The Sydney
Cenotaph, Martin Place on 11 November 2020.
They transported the Veterans along with their
guests from their respective residences to the
ceremony.
Mr Jack Van Emden, a Veteran who served in World
War II said "This is a day to remember all the friends
who I have not seen after the war. In Air Force, we
were drafted from all over Australia. Some came
from Western Australia, some from Queensland
and similarly from various other States. We never
see them again as they are too far away. Today we
remember them!"
When asked about travelling in a Taxi
for the ceremony, Mr Emden described
the experience as "very good" and that
he was "thankful to Manly Cabs for
providing the service".
In addition, one of the Taxi Drivers
from GM Cabs – London Taxis said,
"These respectful Veterans have
represented the country, protected
it and they absolutely deserve to be
treated respectfully. It is an honour for
me to provide service to our Veterans."
A COVID-Safe service was ensured to
all the Veterans, their family members
and guests, "Helping Heathy People
Stay Healthy". LEST WE FORGET.
Train the Trainer
"New Tool in my Toolbox for
Training WATS drivers! Gave
me empowerment as a WATS
Driver"
The NSW Taxi Council conducted the last WATS Assessor (Wheelchair
Accessible Taxi Services) – Train the Trainer programme for the year on
19 and 20 November 2020 at the Lismore Gateway Motel, Lismore in
Northern Regional NSW. Nick Abrahim - Deputy CEO, NSW Taxi Council
trained previously accredited and new WATS Assessors from our member
networks from Regional NSW towns - Port Macquarie, Casino, Lismore
and Byron Bay.
Nick Abrahim expressed his views on the importance of the programme
and said, "Continued training and learning is key for WATS Assessors in
Regional NSW. This is critical to ensure that those who are accredited to
provide training and assessment continue to receive up to date training
to ensure a best in class training and assessment regime is maintained."
It is crucial that the NSW Taxi Council continues to work with our
members to upskill our drivers and assessors to ensure that the highest
standards are maintained when providing services to members of the
disability sector. Having approved Assessors in the Regions is also
important to ensure that Taxi Drivers can have access to accredited
WATS Assessors undergo a refresher training
to help with the training and assessing process
through a consistent and up to date system.
The training involves in-class as well as practical
outdoor training for existing and new WATS
2020 AGM
Queensland News
The Limousine Action Group
Queensland 2020 AGM was a
celebration of finally being able to
have face to face meetings.
Throughout the pandemic the group
has remained active and continued to
support operators, drivers and licence
owners with emotional, practical and
physical support.
The team triggered the department
to issue free sanitiser to the industry,
helped operators with ideas, advice,
referrals and applications for financial
support.
They also continued to report noncompliance,
advertised licences for
sale and lease, whilst also navigating
the challenges raised by the relief
scheme administered by QRIDA and
acted on opportunities to move the
industry forward.
The group is for Queensland
L-R Tom Bebbington, Michelle Andrews, Natasha Henrichsen, Jacqui Shephard and George Chemali
Licence Owners, Operators, Drivers
and those with an interest in the
industry.
Just four years on from the initial
meeting of the 12 founding
members, the group represents the
majority of the Limousine industry
in Queensland and with their
doors open to Booked Hire, and a
generous free one-year membership
for this financial year, they have a
continually growing membership
base.
What makes this group truly unique
is the new friendships and the
support of each other professionally
and personally. This is a group in
which people understand each
other’s frustrations and personal
challenges.
At the AGM, Natasha Henrichsen
(Policy Director) and George
Chemali (Policy Director)
presented on the MaaS initiative
of the Queensland Department of
Transport and Main Roads. Also in
attendance from the Department
were Suzanne Rose and Kit
McDonald.
The Limousine Action Group has
declared that, for them, 2021 is all
about rebuilding by creating new
opportunities.
At the AGM they discussed plans
to pool knowledge, efforts and
resources at both a state and
national level and not only think
outside the box, but think like there
is no box.
States' choice
Abandon electric car taxes or
abandon 2050 zero emission target?
The Electric Vehicle Council is urging
State Governments to clarify whether
they intend to push forward with
electric vehicle taxes or hold to their
2050 zero greenhouse gas emissions
targets.
New research from the University
of Queensland shows the decision
by the governments of Victoria
and South Australia to slug electric
vehicles with new taxes will prevent
these states from reaching their
goal of net-zero greenhouse gas
emissions by 2050.
Dr Jake Whitehead's research on the
impact of such taxes suggests that
the move will reduce electric vehicle
uptake by 50 per cent. But 90 per
cent of cars on the roads must be
electric by 2050 for zero emission
targets to be viable.
Electric Vehicle Council Chief
Executive Behyad Jafari said
State Governments need to pick a
position.
“You don’t need advanced
economics to understand that
applying a big new tax on something
discourages its consumption. These
proposed State taxes will badly stunt
Australia’s electric vehicle uptake
before it even has a chance to get
started,” Mr Jafari said.
“These taxes are like replacing
declining tobacco excise with a
new tax on nicotine patches. They
are madness. And that’s why a
few Australian States are so far the
only jurisdictions in the world silly
enough to flag this policy approach
at this point in global history.
“What this research makes clear
is that we cannot allow State
Treasurers to continue deceiving the
public. You’re either for an electric
vehicle tax or you’re for a 2050 zero
target. You cannot be for both.”

Australia’s COVID-19 vaccine roll-out:
What we know
March 2021 - First vaccine to be available
Health workers and elderly to be given priority
Australia’s immunisation advisory group (ATAGI) puts three
groups at the front of the queue:
• Those who have an increased risk of developing severe disease
• Those at risk of exposure, being infected with and transmitting
the virus (health workers)
• Those working in services critical to society functioning
Vaccination stages
Jabs are expected to be delivered based on 12 age brackets, with over-70s
first, then 65 to 70-year-olds. Eighteen to 23-year-olds come last, with children
unlikely to be vaccinated in 2021.
Will the vaccine be mandatory?
No.
Will I have to pay for it?
No.
Where will I get my jab?
GPs and nurses will initially deliver the two
doses of the vaccine, so medical help is on
hand if needed. Later on it may be possible
for pharmacies to vaccinate younger and
healthier people.
Which vaccine will I get?
Australia has secured almost 115 million
doses of three leading vaccine candidates,
and is part of an international partnership for
others. A task force of medical experts will
decide how they are allowed once approved.
Health minister Greg Hunt has likened the different options to the flu jab in 2020.
“We had a number of flu vaccines that were available. The Australian public didn’t really notice the
difference. Some were more suited to the elderly; others were more suited to the general population.”
Staying
or
Leaving?
Uber rival Ola says it still has a
future in Australia despite the ride
sharing company closing most of its
local operations and making most
of its local staff redundant.
The company's Australian managing
director Simon Smith, who joined
the company in 2018, has left the
business. Meanwhile, Ola has also
closed its local driver offices and
cancelled its personal accident
insurance program for drivers.
In a message sent to drivers Ola said
the local driver offices would be
closed "until further notice".
One former Ola employee, who
wished to remain anonymous, said
it had been hard for the business to
compete with market incumbent
Uber and Chinese startup DiDi,
which made a strong entry into
the Australian market with heavy
discounting.
The Indian ride sharing company
launched in Australia in 2018 and
employed up to 50 people locally.
About 11 staff remain after the
recent redundancies.
However, an Ola spokesperson said
Australia remained a key market.
"Australia, and in no uncertain
terms, is a key market for Ola and
we are focused on growing our
business in the region."
"As part of our efforts to drive
greater synergies and efficiencies
in the business we have made
some changes in our organisational
structure," the spokesperson said.
The company added it had been
reviewing its requirements over
recent months and had updated its
driver insurance arrangements.
"This means that our previous
personal accident insurance
program for drivers is no longer in
effect," the message said.
"Drivers may choose to obtain
their own insurance according to
what works best for them and their
circumstances."
Ola was valued at over $AU8.1
billion before the coronavirus
pandemic hit, with plans to work
towards an initial public offering
backed by investors, including
SoftBank, Tiger Global Management
and Matrix Partners.
Be
smart
in the
sun
Summer is here, and that means
one thing: the sun! With the
holiday season on our doorstep
and a cap on how many people we
can have indoors, we are bound to
be outdoors, having picnics at the
park and visiting the beach, a lot
more this year.
Stay safe in the
sun, and make
sure your skin
is protected
with sufficient
SPF 30 (or
higher) broadspectrum
water-resistant
sunscreen. The
sun emits two
types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation
– UVA and UVB. UVA rays cause
premature ageing in unprotected
skin (such as wrinkles, fine lines
and discolouration), whereas UVB
rays are responsible for sunburn.
However, being exposed to both
these rays without protection
causes the skin cells to degenerate,
and overtime these skin cells can
develop into sun cancer. Reapply
a generous amount of sunscreen
every two hours or after swimming
or excessive sweating.
Let’s not forget about the eyes!
Wear sunglasses and a broadbrimmed
hat to reduce UV
radiation exposure to the eyes
by 98% – as the damage UVA
and UVB rays do to the eyes can
be extensive – including eyelid
cancers and cataracts.
Next, remember to
keep hydrated with
adequate water!
When hot weather
hits, we easily
become dehydrated
due to our bodies
losing too much
water and not replacing lost water
quickly enough. Believe it or not,
we lose water by exhaling, not
just by sweating. Dehydration can
result in serious consequences
such as heat exhaustion and
heatstroke. If you’re heading
out, remember to bring the right
amount of water, and drink it
regularly throughout the day.
A final tip is to choose locations
that offer shaded areas so you can
take a break from the sun, and to
avoid the warmest parts of the
day if possible. Enjoy, and be sun
smart!
Partition Screens for drivers across
London and UK
COVID-19 has impacted all spheres of society with
unprecedented challenges for countries across the globe.
The crisis has completely changed the face of the global
economy affecting all sectors, including the ride-sharing,
car-hailing, and passenger transportation industry.
As a new variant of COVID-19 was identified in London,
drivers across the UK may be concerned about carrying
passengers every day.
While addressing their concerns, Driver Bubble and
FixiCover have been working together to bring Transport
for London (TfL) approved partition screens and shields
for drivers across London and the UK.The shield meets
the legislative and automotive standards and were
subjected to impact, light, fire and chemical resistance
tests.
contactless payments, does not hinder driver-passenger
communication, nor does it close off AC-airstream flows
completely.
Thomas Kruyne, Director of Driver Bubble, said “we
started offering the partition screens to help protect
drivers and their passengers and to stay connected
to one another. Our screens provide a safer and more
secure way of providing rides and getting people from A
to B.”
Easy to clean, simple to install and affordable, Driver
Bubble allows every passenger and driver to feel safer,
more connected and empowered to travel again.
Driver Bubble FixiCover TfL Shield covers 90% of the
surface area between passengers and drivers, reducing
the potential for disease transmission. The screens are
transparent, and allows passengers to continue to feel
seen and acknowledged while providing peace of mind
for all in the vehicle.
The screen is easy to install (and remove) without causing
any damage to the interior, and the material is 250 times
stronger than glass and is also fire retardant.
The transparent screen is entirely suitable for
Zoox self driving taxi
by Maria Deutscher
Amazon.com Inc.’s Zoox unit has
pulled back the curtains on a
homegrown self-driving taxi that
can cover up to 75m/h (10 km/h)
and drive more than half a day on a
single battery charge.
The self-driving taxi (pictured)
debuted by Zoox this morning is
about 12 feet (3.65 metres) long,
has no steering wheel and can seat
four passengers. A
specially developed
airbag system is
attached to each seat.
Under the hood, an
artificial intelligence
driving system pilots
the taxi with the help
of road data collected
by lidar sensors,
radars and cameras
placed on the
vehicle’s exterior.
Zoox says the
vehicle is wellsuited
to operating in dense urban
environments thanks to a four-wheel
steering capability that allows it to
change direction without turning
around when navigating compact
spaces. It also helps that the taxi is
only 12 feet long, which the Amazon
unit says represents “one of the
smallest footprints in the automotive
industry.”
Zoox is currently testing the
vehicle in Foster City as well as San
Francisco and Las Vegas. The unit’s
announcement of the self-driving
taxi states that it’s working to enable
“rider-focused deployment of the
Zoox vision for urban mobility,”
suggesting it may eventually
seek to make its taxis available to
consumers.
