Much of this criticism comes from socalled fans who are unhappy that their fave has an opposing view or alternative life experience. But some of it comes from non-celebrities within the cause who wonder if support from the famous is solely for positive press. Netflix’s “The Prom” tries to examine the latter phenomenon in a cheeky, less serious way, however the focus is on the star-studded aspect of the story. This directorial decision, however unconsciously made, gives off a faint whiff of self-importance in an otherwise sweet story about self-discovery and genuine activism. The film, adapted from a Tony-nominated Broadway musical, begins in a small town in Indiana at a Parent-Teacher Association meeting. Mrs. Greene considers the idea to be an abomination and encourages the association to cancel the festivities to be “fair to all students.” When the festivities are cancelled, outrage is felt throughout the LGBTQ community, their allies, and the student body. The latter’s displeasure and anger, however, is directed at Emma (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) who only wants to have a nice evening with her girlfriend and fellow seniors before graduation. While this is happening in the Midwest, outrage is brewing in New York City, but this comes from a slew of Broadway actors mystified that critics don’t love their latest play, “Eleanor! The Eleanor Roosevelt Musical.” Frustrated at being called unlikeable squirming worms, former big-name stars Dee Dee Allen (Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (James Corden) set off to find something to “make their brand more appealing.” Despite consuming a few alcoholic beverages to get the ideas flowing, they come up with nothing to make themselves more marketable or likeable. While drowning in their sorrows, they learn from fellow struggling actors, Angie Dickinson (Nicole Kidman) and Trent Oliver (Andrew Rannells), about the goings-on in Indiana. Being a gay man, Barry emphathizes with Emma’s plight. Being considered one of the great “gay positive icons,” Dee Dee can, too, in her own way. Knowing they can make a difference using their celebrity, the pair, alongside Angie and Trent, set off for small-town Indiana to “change the minds of those bigoted monsters” and snag some positive press. Though the story largely centers around Emma and the challenges she and her closeted girlfriend, Alyssa Greene (Ariana De- Bose), face, the film’s primary focus is the well-known cast of characters played by actors Streep, Kidman, Corden and, to a lesser degree, Rannells. I have not seen the Broadway play in full—I did catch their showcase at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade that, ironically, drew heavy criticism when it featured a scene with the two female leads kissing—I do not know if that is the case in that medium, as well. But the film version feels slightly less disingenuous with its focus on them. Yes, they are the funniest parts of the musical and, yes, to its credit, it does show their characters trying to grow as fully realized narcissistic adults, but the film could have done a better job of balancing the two topically important stories. While “The Prom” is not a perfect film, it is a bright, enjoyable look at two teenage girls finding strength through their love for each other, a mess of adults trying to improve their behaviors to better themselves and the world, and a possible future where Broadway’s lights can shine again. www.madisonmessengernews.com StoryWalk new at Pastime Park December 20, 2020 - MADISON MESSENGER - Page 11 Plain City Public Library, in partnership with the village of Plain City, announces the installation of a StoryWalk at Plain City’s Pastime Park. The StoryWalk is an innovative way for children and adults to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time. Pages from a children’s book are displayed in cases installed along the walking path at Pastime Park. As park visitors stroll down the trail, they are directed to the next page in the story. The StoryWalk installation was made possible through grant funds secured by the Plain City Parks and Recreation Department and a donation from the Friends of the Plain City Public Library. The StoryWalk project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont, and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk is a registered service mark owned by Ferguson. Pastime Park is located at 270 N. Chillicothe St., Plain City. The walking trail is located next to the playground at the main entrance to the park. Amanda Warner, public services librarian at Plain City Public Library, stands alongside one of the panels of the new Story- Walk installation at Pastime Park.
