Modest Mid-Century Remodeling

“Mid-century” is the feel for this main floor overhaul that transformed a
1960’s suburban two-story, as small, disconnected rooms were opened
up to each other to create
a better flow, with a focus
on daily ritual. First, the
formal dining room was
sacrificed to create a more
utilized mudroom and
built-in pantry. To achieve
this, the dining table found
a new home in the generous
living room.
A new opening into the
living room was made to create sightlines and a more direct connection to the kitchen. The
kitchen peninsula was replaced by a narrow island with seating at one end, providing storage
and a smoother transition into the family room. This project is an excellent example of how
modest changes on a challenging suburban footprint can have a
major impact on the livability of a house.
