What do you love most about
being a hair and makeup artist?
I love character development. Reading a script
or a treatment and then seeing the
collaboration between all artists behind the
scenes come alive on screen—its exciting.
What’s one beauty trend you’d like to see
disappear this year for good?
The biggest hair or makeup trend I’d like to
see disappear in 2021 is the “lollipop lip.”
What is your 2021 New year’s resolution?
My 2021 New Year’s resolution is to not purchase
an item of clothing for the whole year.
Lockdown plans?
My plans in lockdown are not to expect too
much of myself, keep life simple and read
more books.
MARK TIU
What do you love most about being a
photographer?
I love being able to tell stories with the images
we create as artists. The same images
allow for our imaginations to run free as well
as the imaginations of those who view them.
What’s the secret to taking a great self ie?
Personally, I’m really a “behind the camera”
type of photographer. But as with anything
in photography, great lighting is the key.
What is your 2021 New Year’s resolution?
To be more present in 2021. Last year gave
us so many things to deal with and the
uncertainties were very challenging to wrap
my head around.
Lockdown plans?
Staying safe and healthy while re-investing
my time in more photography education.
TREATMENTS
MODERNBEAUTY MAGAZINE
GET
SCULPTED
EMSCULPT NEO IS THE LATEST
BREAKTHROUGH TECHNOLOGY
FROM BTL AESTHETICS,SIMULTANEOUSLY
STRENGTHENING MUSCLE WHILE
BURNING FAT.
I
t’s rare when body treatments that
over-promise actually deliver. But
such is the case with EMSCULPT
NEO, a new fat-burning and
muscle-building treatment now
available at the TMB practice.
Building on the success of its previous incarnation
(named EMSCULPT without
the NEO), this improved non-surgical
treatment still offers the muscle-building
technology that patients love, with the
added benefit of increased fat reduction.
By combining radio frequency and high-intensity
electromagnetic energies at the same
time, EMSCULPT NEO can help you
build 25% more muscle and lose up to 30%
more fat, anywhere on the body—stomach,
buttocks, legs, back and arms.
Dr. Born was the first in Canada to offer
EMSCULPT at the TMB clinic, and is
proud to be the first provider in Canada to
offer EMSCULPT NEO.
“EMSCULPT was a real game changer
in terms of body sculpting procedures,”
Dr. Born says. “To be able to now offer
patients another effective non-surgical,
zero-downtime option that yields
even greater results is very exciting.”
MODERNBEAUTY MAGAZINE
ONE HALF-HOUR SESSION
ON THE EMSCULPT NEO
IS EQUIVALENT TO DOING
20,000 PERFECT SIT-UPS
The treatment is tailored to your body
to lend definition where you want it
most, with the standard treatment
protocol requiring just four 30-minute
sessions over the course of two weeks.
You simply lie back while a technician
applies the body sculpting pads to
the desired treatment area. The pads
deliver a radio frequency-generated
heat, which targets the deep layer of
subcutaneous fat cells causing them
to shrink—by as much as 30%. At
the same time, the device’s patented
HIFEM electromagnetic waves target
the muscles, prompting a supramaximal
contraction. Think of it like a
sit-up that stimulates all the fibres
of the muscles, perfectly, every time.
One half-hour
session on the
NEO is equivalent
to doing 20,000
of those perfect
sit-ups, resulting
in an average 25%
volume increase in
the muscle fibres.
EMSCULPT NEO is also the
easiest thing in the world to sit
through. You don’t even have to take
your clothes off (although Dr. Born
recommends you do for best results).
And while it doesn’t hurt, you will
definitely feel whatever muscles
you’re targeting working hard.
Visible changes generally appear four
to six weeks after the fourth session
(depending on the patient’s original
body composition) with physical
strength improvement in as little
as one week. The treatment doesn’t
replace the work you do in the
gym—but it can certainly augment
it, particularly in situations where
diet and exercise may not be enough.
“The procedure helps patients get
more lean, sculpted and toned, and
perhaps most significantly, the
EMSCULPT NEO improves physical
strength,” Dr. Born says. “I’ve had
patients tell me they can go longer
at the gym and can lift heavier
weights—myself included.
“It just works, which is why we’re
so happy to offer this treatment to
patients in 2021.” //
SKINCARE
MODERNBEAUTY MAGAZINE
CBD
& skincare
Cannabis is trending on beauty counters across the country, including TMB,
alongside some of the world’s most exclusive product lines.
It can be found in everything from candles to
cookies. And as a medicinal treatment, it’s touted
tohelp reduce anxiety, inflammation and insomnia.
Now, cannabis is turning up in beauty products, as the
novelty of legal cannabis continues to inspire new ideas.
CBD-infused serums, soaps, sunscreen, creams and cleansers,
with claims of health and skincare benefits, are making waves.
At TMB, which offers one of the finest selections of
luxury beauty products in Canada, CBD science has
been taken a step further, with the introduction of the
coveted TresMonet CBD serum now drawing the
ultra-luxury market into the cannabis fold.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical compound that
occurs naturally in cannabis plants. It’s one of the
active ingredients of cannabis that doesn’t make people
high.That’s left to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC),
the other primary active ingredent, which works its
psychoactive wonders.
“Research is still in the early stages, but so far it
suggests that CBD in skincare is an effective
antioxidant, reducing inflammation as well as fighting
free radicals that cause skin cell damage, fine lines and
wrinkles,” says top New York dermatologist Dr. Lisa
Airan, who introduced Dr. Born to TresMonet.
MODERNBEAUTY MAGAZINE
RESEARCH IS STILL
IN THE EARLY STAGES, BUT
SO FAR IT SUGGESTS THAT
CBD IN SKINCARE IS AN
EFFECTIVE ANTIOXIDANT,
REDUCING INFLAMMATION
AS WELL AS FIGHTING FREE
RADICALS THAT CAUSE SKIN
CELL DAMAGE, FINE LINES
AND WRINKLES.
“There is also ongoing research on the use
of CBD to treat eczema and psoriasis, so
this is definitely a promising ingredient in
dermatology at the moment.”
Product labelling remains unregulated as
well, but look for products that list cannabidiol,
broad- or full-spectrum CBD, hemp
CBD or hemp extract on the labels.
TresMonet, with outposts in Beverly Hills
and Paris, combines CBD and mollusk
stem cells to promote age-defying beauty
all around. Molecular technology is employed
to create products that harness the
full potential of hemp extract. The company
has produced a complete CBD-infused
skincare line that extends from moisturizers
and cleansers to lotions and balms, even
to wellness products such as homeostasis
capsules.
TMB clients have raved about the Tres-
Monet Rejuvenating Anti-Aging Serum
with CBD + Stem Cells (below), priced at
$1,500. It’s a super-intense CBD serum,
the strongest on the market, that also combines
vitamins A, B12, C, E and K, plus
plant-based collagen to brighten complexions,
yielding a natural glow within five
days. Best applied at night, it can be used
alone or under a moisturizer and suits all
skin types.
As far as trends go, CBD is poised to
continue its reach into Canadian dressingroom
cabinets. Our skin may just thank us
for hopping on the bandwagon. //
Art is one of the most powerful
ways to set a mood in your
uplifting artwork, it can invigorate
and inspire, so look for pieces that
shift your energy in a positive way.
Doable New YOU
These real-life resolutions will bring you a healthier, happier 2021.
Aspirations that elevate your life—coupled with plans that stick.
What does your life look this
year? While we realize
that’s hard to predict these
days on many levels, the
part of the road you can determine involves
realizing what matters most, making a plan
and tweaking yourself into a whole new
you. With more doable life improvements,
even little ones, you can plot out your 2021
with confidence. These experts have some
easy tips to make this year one of your best.
You—better than ever.
REFRESH
YOUR
HOME
How can we
make our spaces
work better for
us now that
we’re spending
more time
at home?
When it comes to décor, even the small
changes can make a big difference. Try these
simple tips from interior designer Suzanne
Dimma to lift your lockdown home out of the
doldrums.
BRING ON THE COLOUR.
In at least one key room, it’s always fun to
use a tropical colour like a saturated green,
blue, pink or orange—guaranteed to liven
things up. Paint your front door one of these
happy colours and you have a nice, warm
welcome. For something even more daring,
try a patterned or colourful wallpaper (yes,
it’s still trending). Patterns with whimsy or
artful interpretations of natural scenery can
make you feel like you’ve stepped into another
world—great for satiating our lockdownweary
wanderlust. Still nervous to be so bold?
Simply commit to a smaller room like a guest
room or powder room.
BALANCE THE LIGHTING.
Good lighting is crucial for making a space
more liveable. A well-designed room needs
general overhead lighting as well as task lights
for directing light to specific functions.
ADD SOME LIFE.
Plants are living sculptures
as well as natural air purifiers,
so they can literally
make you
feel better.
If you’re
blessed with
a green thumb,
bring home one of
those giant potted
fig plants featured in
almost every living
room on Pinterest. They’re
perfect for filling a bay
window or empty
corner. Eucalyptus
and olive
branches are
also great.
MAKE A
CONNECTION
With the recent confines of the
pandemic, intimate partner relationships
have moved toward
more connection—or conversely,
toward greater conflict.
Renowned psychotherapist Dr.
Leslie Born calls it the “rift or
repair” effect. Try incorporating
the simple strategies she offers
to maintain greater closeness
and harmony in your relationships
all year round.
BE GRACIOUS.
Whatever your specific challenge, remember
that when it comes to pandemic-related
stress, everyone is in the same boat. Use more
kindness and compassion with your closest
people, show affection and express appreciation
for one another more frequently, and try
to be a better listener.
USE THE 3-3-3 APPROACH.
Instead of losing your lid on someone, pause
before saying or doing something you might
regret. I often take three steps back, count a
three-second time out and take three slow,
complete breaths.
BE DETERMINED AND DETAILED.
Instead of complaining about what you’re
not getting, ask for what you want. Be
specific: If you’re feeling lonely, ask your
partner for a new opportunity for more
time together. For example, “Would you eat
lunch with me once per week without our
phones?” or “Which night this week is
date night?”
BE THANKFUL.
Without our usual outlets that give us
personal space and time out, conflicts can
arise. Try to remind yourself how lucky
you are to have people you love in your
life—and offer gratitude to them at least
once a day.
LOOK FOR OUTSIDE ADVICE.
There are some easy-to-access resources
that can bolster relationships during this
pandemic and its recovery.
A few of my favourites include:
• Fierce Intimacy by Terry Real (audiobook)
• Mating in Captivity by Esther Perel (book)
• Modern Love, The New York Times
(podcast)
CHAMPION
A CAUSE
If you would benefit
from talking to a professional,
psychotherapist or
qualified practitioner.
The pandemic has
caused many of us to
consider how we can
help others. Giving
back in 2021 feels like the
right thing to do to help
our families and communities
get back on their feet.
But there’s another reason
that makes regular giving a
win-win. Angela Murphy,
a member of the SickKids
Foundation Senior Management
Team, says research
studies have shown that giving
increases happiness. Humans
are wired to release endorphins
(much like exercising or hugging)
when engaging in the act
of giving. Here are few ways you
can put your plan into action.
MAKE IT A FAMILY AFFAIR.
Take advantage of the extra
family time to identify what’s
most important by zeroing in on
one or two top priorities, such as
supporting health care research,
education or the environment.
Once you have a focus, you can identify
charities that align with your goals. Becoming
a monthly donor is a great way
to make an impact.
FIND A WAY TO GET
INVOLVED.
Volunteering is more
difficult to do these
days, but that doesn’t
stop you from initiating
a food drive in your
neighbourhood or setting
up a fundraising page in
support of your favourite
non-profit.
EDUCATE YOURSELF.
Many charities have launched webinar
series or other virtual sessions covering a
myriad of topics, including how donations
make a difference. Make it a goal
to take advantage of these to learn more
about the causes that are important to
you—and feel more connected.
REFINE
YOUR STYLE
Since the pandemic has pared down
our need for so many clothes, fashion
guru Peter Papapetrou wants
you to take a long, hard
look at your closet.
Which pieces do you
love? Which ones are
you truly excited to
wear? Peter, a stylist
with Plutino Group,
thinks this year
should
be about
loving you
and being fearless
with your style
choices. Here are a few
of his easy tips to step up
your fashion game.
PARE DOWN.
Peter calls this the Tuff
Love Closet Edit—the
hardest thing to do, but
a task that will result
in the foundation you
need to make every
day effortless. All
of us have way too
many things in our
closets and most of
us only wear 20% of it.
Make sure everything fits
your body type and the
size you are now—not five
or 10 pounds from now.
This will make your life
smoother—and you’ll know
what you’re missing and
what to build on.
GO TIMELESS.
Classic accessories are a great way
to make you feel polished. The
right statement ring, earrings or
necklace with a simple sweater or
sweatshirt can easily change your
mood. I’ve also found myself supporting
more local brands who do
some amazing pieces. My favourite
Canadian lines include Dean Davidson,
Jenny Bird, Biko Jellwery and Rita
Tesolin (crystal encrusted cuff, below).
LOUNGE IN STYLE
As we’re all living, working and playing at
home, cool loungewear will give you the
comfort you need along with some elevated
style. So many brands are doing this now,
Pistache Apparel (bottom left) among them.
Try wearing monochrome knitwear
sets and cool runners. This is the
quickest way to feel chic at
home or out to run errands.
MIND YOUR
MONEY
Talking about food and
financial literacy may
seem unconventional, but
food is very tightly intertwined
with the health of not
just our bodies, but also of our pocketbooks.
Aleksandra Jassem and Nikita
Stanley, authors of Get Your $hit
Together: The Rebel Mama’s Handbook for
Financially Empowered Moms (Harper
Collins), have a few pieces of advice on
how to make smarter food decisions
that are kinder to your community, your
planet, your family—and your wallet.
EAT MEATLESS MORE OFTEN.
If you’re looking to reduce your spending
along with your carbon footprint, consider
going plant-based for the majority
of your meals and buying high-quality
but less sought-after cuts for a few meals
a week.
LEARN TO LOVE LEFTOVERS.
When you cook, have a plan in place for
how you will handle leftovers. Make a
quick hash with leftover mashed potatoes.
Turn that leftover flank steak from the
weekend into tacos on Monday.
FORGET BOTTLED WATER.
Plastic containers wreak havoc on the environment.
And in many cities, the water
that comes out of the tap is just as clean
as bottled. If you need the added peace of
mind, though, get yourself a Brita filter
system and call it a day. And if you like
your water sparkly, pick up a SodaStream
and pump out all the bubbles you want.
HAVE A GARDEN PARTY.
We encourage you to stick a couple of
pots on your deck or windowsill and
poke some seeds in there. You don’t need
a ton of space to grow herbs, tomatoes,
peppers or (if you’re fancy)
edible flowers and lettuces.
Plus, this gives
you something to
look after that
doesn’t talk
back!
BEAUTY BY
ANA SORYS
Founder of Cotidien activewear, former lawyer, mother of three
and fitness enthusiast TERI ROSENTHAL is the embodiment of MOTIVATED
and exactly the kind of inspiration we need to kick off 2021.
ModernBeauty: Hi Teri!
As you know, we love sharing
stories of our amazing
patients in every issue. Tell us a bit
about yourself.
Teri Rosenthal: Thank you so
much for the opportunity! I adore
Dr. Born and am super excited to
be featured in the magazine.
I’m from Montreal and have spent
most of my life there, with the exception
of my university years when
I studied civil and common law at
the University of Ottawa.
I practiced family law for 13 years,
but as time went by and I started
having children, the work became
more and more challenging. The
hours were long, I wasn’t at home
as much as I wanted to be. So, after
my third child was born, I decided
to leave law and start a business that
had been on my mind for years—
and this is when Cotidien was born.
I have always been passionate about
fitness, and as a busy mom, I pretty
much live in activewear and loungewear.
I noticed that many of the
more fashion-forward activewear
brands weren’t available in Canada, so
I made it my mission to change that!
That’s quite the change, going from
a law career to founder of a fashion
brand. Do you miss being a lawyer?
I did love my legal career and I’m
still passionate about the law, but
the time came for me to go out on
my own, follow my dream and build
something from the ground up. It’s
been helpful to have the law degree
in my back pocket as we build Cotidien,
a skillset I get to use regularly
and rely on in so many ways. >>
“IN LIFE, YOU’VE JUST GOT TO
SHOW UP EVERY DAY
AND KEEP ON GOING.
AND WHEN YOU DO THAT
CONSISTENTLY ENOUGH,
YOU GET STRONGER.”
Talk to us about your passion for fitness.
What’s your go-to workout?
I’ve loved fitness since I was a young
girl. Sweating, letting out those
endorphins and just moving is so
important for me to feel healthy. My
go-to workout is spinning—we call
it “cycle practice” at the studio where
I train now. It’s so much fun to get
on a bike and get into it with the
music—it’s like we’re dancing. We
really have the best time!
Is there a particular studio or online
class that you recommend?
Whenever I would travel to New
York—which, before the pandemic,
was often—I would go to a studio
there called Aarmy.
I remember the first class I ever
went to. I was really struggling
at the time. When I was younger,
I had an eating disorder, which
I recovered from. Then 14 years
later, around the time I left law and
launched Cotidien, the stress got to
me and I relapsed.
The coach, Akin Akman, used words
that really spoke to me in that moment.
He reminded me that there
will always be struggles in life. The
important thing isn’t to be perfect,
it’s to Keep. On. Peddling. In life,
you’ve just got to show up every day
and keep on going. And when you
do that consistently enough, you get
stronger.
What I try to focus on now is building
that strength—mentally and physically—and
Aarmy helps me do that on
a daily basis.
Tell us more about your family. What’s it
like being a mom of three?
I have two boys and a girl aged eight,
seven and six. They’re all almost a
year apart, which, yes, sounds ludicrous!
What was I thinking?! But for
real: I love being a mom. I remember
when I was working as a lawyer, it
was so hard. I was not home a lot,
and when I was in the office, all I
could think about was “What are my
kids doing? What are they eating?
Are they OK?”
Now that I’m doing my own thing, I’m
definitely still busy, but I’m able to see
them a lot more because I mainly work
from home. They’re great kids for sure,
and sometimes they even help me out
with work: My six-year-old organizes my
paperwork. It’s so cute.
So, what brought you to the TMB clinic
and Dr. Born?
Well… speaking of motherhood,
having kids definitely does something
to your body! After nursing
three babies for three years, my
breasts were... terrible. I remember
getting dressed one day and my
husband, who’s the most uncritical
person in the world, said to me,
“Maybe we should see some doctors
about your breasts?” And I was 100%
in total agreement.
I was referred to Dr. Born in Toronto,
so my husband and I flew in to see
him for an appointment. And when
we met him, we both immediately
fell in love. He understood what I
wanted right away. I am so happy
with the results.. >>
If another mom asked me if she
should do whatever procedure
she’s been thinking about, I’d tell
her without hesitation, see Dr. Born!
There is no other doctor in the world
that I trust more. I will drive the five
hours to come and see him for all
my beauty treatments, no question
about it. He’s worth it!
FITLIST
Let’s face it—working out from home isn’t easy. Staying motivated, interested and committed is a challenge.
So what do you do when you hit that “plateau” and need a little boost? Reinvigorate your routine by adding these simple,
inexpensive accessories to your workout, along with a few choice outfits from Cotidien Activewear.
Let
out your
inner Rocky
Balboa with this
tried
and true favou-
rite of all
the best box-
ers: jumping
rope. Since this exercise gets your heart
pumping fast, it’s great for your cardiovascular
system and heart health. Just 15
minutes of jumping rope burns an average
of 300 to 450 calories and challenges
all of the major muscle groups. Plus,
it improves motor skills and coordination
(which are important to maintain
especially as we age) by requiring several
body parts to communicate in order to
complete the movement.
I
f you’ve taken a Pilates
class or undergone physio
- you’ve probably encountered
resistance bands. The great thing
about them is their versatility. They can
typically be added to any existing workout
routine to help you maximize the use
of all your muscle groups. For example,
try adding a resistance band to a regular
push up: wrapping the band across
your shoulders/ back forces you to fight
against the band on the recovery movement—essentially
preventing you from
using the upward momentum to “cheat”
and make the exercise easier. Or, use a
band to do an overhead press while you’re
doing a lunge. We promise you’ll start to
feel the burn fast!
A
nother allround
fitness
accessory, the
weighted ball or “medicine ball” has been
around for close to 3,000 years, so there
must be something to it! We love this accessory
because it adds an element of play
to workouts while improving coordination,
balance and core strength. You can
add a medicine ball to everything from
sit-ups and chest twists to squats and
more. Or simply throw your ball against
the wall and enjoy the benefits of “functional
movement,” which will help you
perform everyday tasks more efficiently,
like lifting heavy things or passing an
object to another person.
innovations that promise to transform our
TREVOR BORN M.D.NOW
2020
was a challenging year. Our limits were tested mentally,
physically and emotionally many times over. But the tough times
often inspire us to push harder and make change—and 2020
was undoubtedly full of promising and meaningful change for the future.
When it comes to our health and wellness, there were many medical advancements in
healthcare last year that give us much to be excited about in 2021. >>
TELE-HEALTH
BECOMES
A REALITY
For people living in remote communities,
or those with conditions that
prevent them from physically visiting a
doctor, getting access to quality healthcare
has always been a challenge—
until now. telehealth has long had the
potential to transform the delivery
of healthcare services, but it took the
COVID-19 pandemic to finally make
this platform a viable option for both
providers and patients.
With lockdowns in place and the virus
raging in healthcare centres, it became
critical for clinicians to pivot their services
from in-person to online. Suddenly,
telehealth wasn’t just a good idea, it was
a necessity. From April until June 2020,
my practice implemented (for the first
time ever) an entirely virtual model for all
non-urgent care and consultations. The
takeaway: patients liked it. They could
consult with me about everything from
skincare to injectables to surgery all from
the comfort of their home.
By August 2020, the CDC reported that
nearly a quarter of all Americans had
used a computer, an app or a phone for a
telemedicine appointment.
There are even new diagnostic tools
being developed that will allow doctors
to gather information which
typically requires an in-person visit:
the brand new “MedWand” is a USBconnected
device that gives a physician
real-time access to data from 10
examination tools, including a stethoscope,
a thermometer, a pulse oximeter
(for monitoring heart rate and blood
oxygen levels) and an ECG sensor.
The device is pending FDA clearance.
So is telehealth here to stay? Probably
not to the same extent that it has been
during the pandemic.
Doctors will
always need to see
their patients in the
flesh for certain assessments
and procedures.
However,
the shift toward at
least a few virtual
appointments each
year will certainly
ease the burden of
in-office care for
providers, while
allowing greater
access and convenience
for patients.
Everybody wins.
RELIEF
WITH NEW
MIGRAINE MEDS
Vice-like tension, pain, nausea,
aural symptoms including flashes
of light, blind spots and loss of equilibrium…
Migraine attacks are classified
by the World Health Organization
as one of the most disabling
illnesses among humans, comparable
to dementia and psychosis. And
yet, migraine sufferers are an often
underserved part of the population.
While multi-purpose drugs such
as triptans, nerve-blockers, blood
pressure and anti-seizure meds have
been used to treat migraines, these
(often off-label) solutions have
yielded mixed results and numerous
side effects. There has been very little
development in treatment options
specifically for migraine relief.
Thankfully, 2020 saw the addition of
a new class of drugs designed for the
preventative treatment of migraines.
Ubrelvy (Allergan) is the first
FDA-approved “gepant drug,” which
works by controlling the activity of
a pain-regulating molecule called
the calcitonin gene-related peptide
(CGRP). During a migraine attack,
CGRP levels spike—Ubrelvy blocks
the molecule’s ability to bind to its
corresponding receptor in the body,
effectively stopping a migraine from
ever getting started.
mRNA
FINDS
THE SPOTLIGHT
Traditional vaccines, such as the
ones used to treat Polio or measles,
are undoubtedly some of the most
important medical innovations in
human history. They work by teaching
our immune system what a virus
looks like by introducing a weakened
or inactivated version of it into our
bodies. Once the body is familiar
with the virus, the immune system
will fight it off.
fizkes/ Shutterstock.com
26
OTEMODERNBEAUTY MAGAZINE
2020 saw the advent of a new kind of
vaccine. Instead of using inactive virus
material, new mRNA vaccines teach
our cells how to make the virus’s protein
“shell” on their own. In the case of
COVID-19: mRNA teaches the body
how to make a fragment of COVID’s
unique “spike” protein, thus familiarizing
the body with it before it can latch
onto our cells and cause infection.
While the use of the mRNA vaccine
to treat COVID is just beginning, in
fact, scientists have been researching
its potential for decades, and the
applications for these new vaccines are
very exciting. There are currently studies
testing mRNA vaccines against
Zika, Ebola and influenza. Also showing
great promise are mRNA cancer
treatments: Phase 1 BioNTech trials
of an mRNA vaccine were found to
significantly shrink tumors in people
with advanced melanoma.
So, while we may be just learning
about mRNA and thanking it for
giving us some light at the end of the
COVID tunnel, this certainly won’t
be the last time we hear about this
remarkable discovery.
THE 1st
NEW RETINOID
IN 20 YEARS
Retinoid products have rightfully
claimed their place as one of the
most essential, reliable skincare
treatments on the market. Topical
use of retinoic acid encourages cellular
turnover, and can stimulate collagen,
soften wrinkles, fade pigmentation,
reduce acne and give the skin
an overall youthful glow. Patients
love the results, but the redness,
flaking and peeling that can sometimes
occur before getting to that
clear, lit-from-within complexion?
Not so much. Which is why those of
us in the medical aesthetics community
are pretty pumped about the
first new retinoid product to receive
FDA approval in two decades.
Retinoids typically work by binding
to retinoic acid receptors (RAR) on
the skin’s surface, speeding up cellular
turnover and giving way to brandnew,
healthy skin cells. The downside:
the turnover period can be challenging,
with side effects such as itchy,
irritated skin, dryness, and noticeable
peeling of the dermis. A new retinoid
product called Aklief (trifarotene)
works by selectively targeting only a
narrow group of gamma RAR on the
skin, thus reducing the likelihood of
traditional side effects like stinging,
itchiness and dryness.
Also worth noting: the medication is
approved for use on the face and body,
giving acne sufferers a new treatment
option for persistent breakouts on the
chest and back.
So there we have it! Hopefully, this
information gives you a little insight
and inspiration for 2021—a few
pieces of
positive and
promising
news for
the future.
As always,
I’m here to
answer any
questions
you may
have about
these new
medical
developments
and
others, and
I encourage
you to reach out to me or my staff if
you have a concern.
