TWU calls
FOR PENALTIES FOR
ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

WA’s transport union has called
for tougher penalties to protect
taxi and rideshare drivers after
shocking footage emerged of a
man jumping on to a moving car
in Northbridge.
The footage shows the man
stepping in front of a Swan Taxi
vehicle as it pulled out of the
Aberdeen Street and William
Street intersection before
leaping onto the bonnet and
running across the car.
“There needs to be tougher
laws put in place. Whether it’s
a taxi or bus driver, we need to
strengthen the laws.”
“You can’t use the current laws
around antisocial behaviour, for
(transport workers) there needs
to be separate penalties. It’s the
only way to deter them.”
“If he landed on the taxi and
damaged it, the taxi (driver)
would likely foot the bill — he’d
get a slap on the wrist.”
He said drivers were “on the
front line” and constantly faced
threats just for doing their job
each day.
Friends can be heard laughing
at his dangerous stunt along
with his other antics, which
include stopping drivers to ask
for their driver’s licence.
The footage prompted
Transport Workers Union WA
branch secretary Tim Dawson
to call for an end to antisocial
behaviour towards drivers
and more protection from the
State Government.
“He’s just an idiot. At the end
of the day, think of what could
have gone wrong,” he said.
