KNA welcomes the
University of Kentucky
College of Social Work as
an affiliate organization
Removal of CAPA-CS Requirement for APRNs Who Meet Criteria – To
ensure nurse practitioners can practice to the full extent of their education and
training to increase access to underserved populations throughout Kentucky.
Nurse practitioners fill a large gap in access to care. This will not only improve
access, but health outcomes for Kentuckians. Result: SB78 with amendment
considered; bill not passed.
School Nurse in Every School, All Day, Every Day – This initiative ensures
access to health providers for public school children throughout KY. Studies
suggest that schools with a school nurse have higher graduation rates and better
overall outcomes. Result: Not a GA bill in the 2021 session; KNA School Nurse
Task Force members are seeking Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security
(CARES) and Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds
to place nurses in schools for the next budgeted year.

Increase Access to Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) – Sexual
Assault Nurse Examiners are specifically trained to care for victims of sexual
assault. Care by a SANE nurses results in better patient outcomes and higher
conviction rates. Sexual assault nurse examiners have become the gold standard
in care for victims of sexual assault, but Kentucky has a huge deficit which results
in a delay in care. We must ensure that victims have access to this specialized care
to improve outcomes, decrease costs, and improve the safety of our communities.
Result: Introduced, not assigned as a bill.
Evacuation of Surgical Smoke – Surgical smoke contains hundreds of
carcinogens that puts patients and medical providers at risk. The answer, that
many states have already mandated, is very simple. We must mandate the use
of smoke evacuation systems in our operating rooms. We must ensure we are
safeguarding those who save lives. Result: Gov. Beshear signed Kentucky SB
38 into law, requiring hospitals and outpatient centers to use a surgical smoke
evacuation system during any procedure that generates smoke.
