on Dedicated Education Units and a webinar
hosted jointly by KNA and the KBN that focused
on nursing laws, and how to protect your license
and understand scope of practice and
The Kentucky Nurses Association needs nurse and
nursing student volunteers to help with COVID-19 testing
and vaccinations. Those interested in Louisville, may
the state, contact your chapter leader or reach out to the
KNA at admin@kentucky-nurses.org. As vaccinations are
becoming more available to Kentuckians, remember it’s still
very important to get tested for COVID-19. Visit ky-covidtesting
for a list of testing sites throughout the state.
To date, more than two million Kentuckians have received
at least one vaccine dose.
We thank the more than 560 KNA COVID volunteers and
all nurses across the state who are lending their time and
expertise to help combat the pandemic. Keep in mind that
we provide and require PPE for all volunteers!
• Editorials appeared in newspapers throughout
the state recognizing our profession and once
again, saying “Thank You” to nurses.
Movie Night 6: A Dangerous Idea: Eugenics,
Genetics and the American Dream,” 6:30 -
9:15 p.m., Thursday, June 24. At the end of this
program, participants will be able to:
• Describe the historical basis for viewing
some groups, races and individuals as
inherently superior to others and more
deserving of fundamental rights based off
of genetics;
• Discuss the use of eugenics and genetics
in the sterilization of certain populations
of women;
• Discuss the myth of “racial” health
disparities and how they are based on
falsely interpreted and employed science
and
• Discuss the importance of evaluating all
science, including nursing science, with a
clear eye and willingness to questions its
use in creating inequities throughout our
society, particularly within healthcare.
There is a dangerous idea that has
threatened the American Dream from the very
beginning. It is a strong current of biological
determinism which views some groups, races
and individuals as inherently superior to
others and more deserving of fundamental
rights. Despite the founders’ assertion that
“all are created equal,” this idea was used to
justify disenfranchising women, blacks and
Native Americans from the earliest days of the
Republic.
This film reveals how this dangerous idea
gained new traction in the 20th century with
an increasing belief in the concept of an allpowerful
“gene” that predetermines who is
worthy and who is not. The film reveals how
this new genetic determinism provided an
abhorrent rationale for state sanctioned crimes
committed against America’s poorest, most
vulnerable citizens and for violations of the
fundamental civil rights of untold millions.
