Book club
Winter … bed, book and red wine weather!
Finding love, hope and joy in even the darkest moments. In Lucy Diamond’s The Promise,
a young man whose brother has just died is on a mission … a project to help pick up the
pieces and support his grieving sister-in-law Zoe, plus her young children. This is his promise
– to ensure his family’s happiness, and to try and live up to the man his brother was. But
tying up loose ends brings a shocking secret to light, and calls into question everything he
knew about his older brother, and he’s faced with an ultimatum – should he tell the truth
and risk his family’s fragile happiness, or will his brother’s secrets end up becoming his
own? Pan Macmillan. • Oh dear. Get the tissues out. Pippo and Clara by Diana Rosie is set
in Italy in 1938. Mussolini is in power, and war isn’t far off. Clara and Pippo are children, their
family new to the city. One morning, their mamma goes missing, and 10-year-old Clara
needs to find her. She doesn’t know which way to turn. A little later, her younger brother
goes out, looking for his mum and sister. Clara’s turned one way, he turns the other. And
so their lives are changed forever. In a country torn apart by war, siblings are divided by
fate. But there’s an invisible bond that connects us to those we love, no matter which
way we turn. A chilly weekend, a fireplace and soft sofa and a copy of this heart-warming
novel … heaven. Mantle • Not Dark Yet is Peter Robinson’s latest Alan Banks crime novel,
which opens with a gruesome double murder at a property developer’s luxury home.
With a clear link to the notoriously vicious Albanian mafia, it should be an open-and-shut
case for Superintendent Banks and his team. But when they find a cache of spy-cam videos
in the house, the investigation pivots to the rape of a young girl, and the murders are cast
in an entirely different light. Hodder and Stoughton.
Middelvlei Wines winemaker Tinnie Momberg describes this Free-Run
Pinotage 2019 as a wine with complex flavours of raspberries, mulberries and
elegant oak spices, adding that the gentle tannins are perfectly balanced by the
fruit weight with creamy vanilla flavours that linger on the palate. It’s lovely with
a braai, and you’ll find it for R150 a bottle from middelvlei.co.za
Traveller
extraordinaire
Using travel as a form of self-discovery, Vic Naidoo likes to roam the globe. Restricted
by lockdown (for now), he revives his wanderlust by sharing his adventures with us.
Text: BRONWYN FORBES-HARDINGE Photo: PENNY KATZ PHOTOGRAPHY
resh, unapologetic
and inclusive, he’s
the guy who brings
his honest brand
of humour to your
airwaves between 1pm
and 4pm weekdays. As
a presenter on KZN’s
No.1 Hit Music Station,
East Coast Radio, Vic Naidoo is living
his dream. The only thing that’s
missing right now though is the
freedom to travel – something he is
incredibly passionate about and finds
solace in.
“I absolutely love it! I learn so much
about me whenever I travel and I
come back home more connected
to myself.”
If it wasn’t for the pandemic, Vic
would’ve been prepping and
packing for a trip to Greece or Spain
this year. They are at the top of his
bucket list, followed closely by Bali,
New York and India, which is another
mission he’s got lined up.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have
travelled to many places around
the world, with London, the South
of France and Monaco (because I’m
obsessed with Princess Charlene)
being my favourites so far.
The biggest cultural shock I
experienced while travelling was
how well public transport works in
Europe! We could learn a lot. I also
often like to travel overseas around
my birthday – to avoid birthday calls
LOL! And since my mom and I share
the same birthday, I am dying to treat
her to a trip to India for our birthday.”
Reflecting on some of his travel
10 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga July 2021

experiences, Vic recalls his first trip to
Germany as being pretty horrendous.
“I landed in Munich and needed
to find my way to my hotel from
the airport, but people were not
very friendly and I struggled to find
anyone who could speak English.
I hopped from one train to the
next, holding my breath, until well
after midnight when I eventually
got off and walked to a little shop
where I found someone who could
understand and guide me in the
right direction. That was the day I
learnt to read a map!”
On a trip to Thailand with his family
Vic says he had a little too much to
drink on the first night and tripped
and broke his ankle. “For the next 10
days, I was stuck in my hotel room
watching Netflix, while everybody
else got to enjoy the island! Lesson
learnt!”
By far the most enlightening
experience Vic says he has had was in
Paris. “I was going through a breakup,
and took myself off to the Champ de
Mars - the huge green park behind
The Eiffel tower – where I treated
myself to cheese and wine. I spent
most of the day staring at the tower
and eventually woke up to the fact
that life is too short to be sad about
anyone. That changed everything for
me.”
Being more of a romantic and less
of an adrenalin adventurer, Vic loves
anything with history and says a visit
to the Vatican is a must for every first
time visitor to Rome. “The Vatican
Museum and St Peters in Vatican City
are two star attractions steeped in
history and beautiful architecture
that has been so well preserved over
I absolutely love it! I learn so much about
me whenever I travel and I come back
home more connected to myself.
time. This really was a spiritual experience for me.
“Something hair-raising and fascinating at the same time was the four days I
spent in Amsterdam. I can ride a bicycle, but learning to ride one along some
of busiest streets in the world, minding buses and trains and trams on route, is
a completely different ball game.”
As for the best views he has ever seen, Vic says it has to be Monaco for the sea
and its magnificent sunsets. “Monaco Harbour with all its mega yachts...Monte
Carlo Casino, an iconic landmark that was made to be photographed...it is
simply stunning, and of course there’s the royal palace perched above it all!”
When it comes to food, he says, “the best food I ever ate on my travels was a
pea soup I had in Austria. I’m not sure if it was the soup or the cold that made it
so delicious!”
And as for an experience no visitor to France should ever forego, Vic says the
magic of Paris’ most legendary cabarets, The Moulin Rouge is a must.
“It was the end of my holiday, I was on the last of my spending money and the
show cost the equivalent of abut R3 000 at the time, but I didn’t know if I’d ever
return and I didn’t want to regret not going, so I did. The show was excellent,
costumes breathtaking, dancers gorgeous and the acts in-between really great.
This is something that should be done at least once in a person’s life. It was
worth every cent.”
Locally, Mpumalanga is one of Vic’s most loved South African travel
destinations. Otherwise known as the ‘Place where the Sun Rises’, he says
people are drawn to the province by its magnificent scenery, fauna and flora,
and the fascinating remnants of the 1870 gold-rush era.
Being the travel enthusiast he is, Vic’s home is a shrine to all of his wayfaring
adventures. Lots of colour, loads of quirks and plenty of character.
“There’s something to capture your eye in every corner. Comfort is the most
important thing to me and I’ve filled my home with picture frames and
mementos (crockery, TV blankets and art) from some of my favourite travel
destinations to remind me of my journeys.”
The items Vic cannot travel without are his travel wallet to hold his passport,
money and tickets, a good sunblock and a comfortable pair of sneakers.
He’s admittedly not brilliant when it comes to saving, but says he lives
vicariously with the belief that if you want something that much, you will
always make a plan, and that he does!
Extreme adventurer
He’s slept on beaches, in garages and even in drain pipes. He has cycled from Cape
Town to Cairo and run 4000km across Southern Africa … and now he’s bringing his
insane sense of adventure and desire to help others to the North Coast.
Text: Leah Shone
Some people are born with adrenalin
coursing through their veins and
adventure surging through their soul.
Gaven Sinclair is one such human.
A professional adventurer, 48-year-old
Gaven has made it his life’s mission to
help others by embarking on exciting
challenges that allow him to chase
that constant ‘adrenalin high’ that he
says never goes away.
His latest challenge, set to take place
in October, will see him and Ballito All
Saints Catholic Church pastor, Father
Stephen Tully, doing a 1000km beach
walk from Mozambique to Ballito to
raise funds for the Napier Centre for
Healing.
Gaven was born in Johannesburg
and spent his youth taking part in
BMX and motocross races and doing
just about every sport he could. “I got
my first bicycle and my first taste of
freedom when I was 4-years-old. From
then on, my parents always supported
my sporty, adventurous spirit.”
After completing his business
management studies and trying his
hand in the corporate world, Gaven
soon realised it wasn’t the right path
for him. “I never liked to conform and
I just didn’t fit in. At school I suffered
with dyslexia and ADD and it was
very hard. I’m really glad to see how much more awareness there is nowadays in
schools around kids who are different and that they are being taught how to be
self-sufficient entrepreneurs.”
It was in 2015 that Gaven decided he needed a massive shift in his life. Having
always felt a strong connection to Egypt, he decided to ride his bicycle
from Cape Town to Cairo while raising funds for a charity organisation. The
organisation he chose was Missing Children SA and it took him nine months to
complete the trip.
“I’ve always been addicted to adrenalin and endorphins – I chase that feeling
every day of my life. I love bending the ‘fear metre’ and pushing myself beyond
my own perceived limits.”
In true Gaven style, he decided not to train for the adventure (and says his
buttocks were very sore for the first week). He also decided not to go the
traditional route, but rather to make his way up along the East Coast of Africa.
He travelled through Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and
finally, Egypt. “I had lots of media following me along the way, which was great
for the tourism in each of the areas and I met the most fascinating people. I
would say ninety-nine percent of the trip was amazing … but there were one or
two occasions where I had to pedal for my life,” Gaven laughs.
He did the entire trip completely alone. “I don’t think it’s a real challenge if
you have a support vehicle with you. I wanted to do it completely solo and
somehow, I just believed everything would work out okay. I believe in never
allowing the fear of the unknown to paralyse you.”
Gaven’s trip certainly was an adventure and one that, he says, he managed to
complete because of the kindness and support of the people around him. “I
Gaven ran 4000km across
Southern Africa in 2016
never felt lonely and there was always someone to talk to.
It was humbling on so many levels. I slept everywhere –
from hotels to drain pipes and camp sites to garages - and
I always managed to find something to eat.”
After returning home for a short six months, Gaven was
ready for his next adventure. Representing the same
charity organisation, he set out to run 4000km across
Southern Africa.
He started his run in St Lucia, running north towards
Mozambique. He went across to Botswana, Namibia and
down the West Coast of SA, finishing the trip in Cape
Town.
“It wasn’t easy and I really had to listen to my body. I would
sometimes run up to 40km in one day and I had to carry a
10kg backpack with me (mostly for water) at times. Gaven
says he ate lots of spinach and lots of beans and always
managed to find a Coca-Cola!
In the past few years Gaven has embarked on other
challenges, like swimming from an island called Iles de
Mozambique to Mozambique mainland in 2019 and
running 388km along the beach in Mozambique in 2020.
“I just need to do these things all the time,” he says.
Although Covid brought with it some challenges for
Gaven, he has now returned to South Africa and started
his own adventure company called Get Lost Adventures,
which sees him taking individuals, groups and corporates
on adventures. He is also a motivational speaker and life
coach.
He is also gathering momentum for his fundraising walk
in October in aid of the Napier Centre for Healing. The
centre for recovering drug addicts aims to support and
reintegrate addicts back into society.
Asked about his future goals, Gaven says he has many
adventures still to tackle … and he would like to star in a
reality show one day! “So many people have helped me
get to where I am and achieve what I have and I’m really
open to trying anything. I believe everyone should chase
their dreams, no matter how wacky they are!” One day
in the future though, Gaven says, he would like to build
himself a bamboo treehouse and live a quiet, secluded,
simple life.
Being truly healthy is about more
than just losing weight or being
able to run or cycle for hours on
end. It’s about having a strong
immune system and following
a balanced, sustainable lifestyle.
And, according to Kate, it all starts
with knowing how to breathe
correctly.
“I truly believe that stress is the
root cause of almost all health
ailments. Stress directly affects
our gut and poor gut health
leads to all other illnesses. Being
aware of and able to control your
breathing is the very best way to
manage your stress.”
After hearing a little about her
childhood and upbringing, it’s
Just breathe
Good health starts with simply knowing how
to breathe correctly, says Salt Rock nutritionist,
lifestyle coach and yoga practitioner Kate Arnott.
She shares her knowledge and some useful
advice for sustainable, holistic health.
not hard to understand why the
lovely, petite Kate is as passionate
about health and the natural
environment as she is.
“My brother, sister and I were
brought up in a mud house
(also known as wattle and
daub), designed and built by
our mother, in the Midlands.
All of our holidays were spent
camping in the bush in rural
parts of Botswana, Mozambique,
Zimbabwe and South Africa. We
were also always treated with
natural, alternative medication
and I’ve actually never been on an
antibiotic for being sick. I think it
can be hard for parents to remain
true to their beliefs these days,
but my mom did. I definitely got
my passion for health and my
connection to nature from her,”
says Kate.
After attending boarding school
in Hilton, Kate moved to Cape
Town where she did an honours
degree in nutrition science. Her
special interest (and her thesis)
was on stress management and
gut health and the link between
the two. “It was quite a new
concept at the time, but I think
people have a much better
understanding of it these days.”
Although she was always very
active growing up, competing in
multiple Dusi canoe marathons
and doing lots of trail running,
16 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga July 2021

Kate only discovered the benefits
of yoga a little later in life. “I found
yoga to be one of the best forms of
exercise to still give me a really good
workout while also allowing me to
enjoy the profound benefits it has
on stress management.” She is now
an advanced yoga instructor, having
done over 500 hours of teacher
training, and has been teaching for
over four years.
After her studies, Kate found
herself back in the bush, working
as a massage therapist and yoga
instructor at both Phinda and
Londolozi Game Reserves for a
year. Then she moved to Ballito
where she took up a job working at
a health shop. “I knew I wanted to
be in nature and felt a strong pull
towards the ocean. I loved working
with Judy at Lifestyle Health and
learnt an incredible amount.”
Now Kate runs her own nutrition
and yoga practice, incorporating
her knowledge and experience with
her passion for ancient philosophies
and alternative healthcare. During
her yoga classes, Kate puts a lot of
emphasis on correct breathing. “I
cue every breath and my focus is on
helping people manage their stress
through their breath awareness. It
sounds so simple – all you have to
do is breathe – but it is truly such
a profound healing modality. It
improves your immune system and
helps with inflammation, gut health,
chronic pain and your mental state.”
Very often, Kate says, we try to
overcomplicate things and rush
through life to get to our goals. The
key to living a healthy, balanced life
though is learning to slow down
and appreciate more. I think how we
breathe is how we do life. There are
so many lessons that you can take
off the yoga mat and into everyday
life.”
When it comes to nutrition, Kate
also says we can use our food as
medicine, but if we are in a chronic
state of stress, we won’t extract the
nutrients we need from the food
we eat. “I believe in eating a wellrounded
diet and don’t believe in
extreme dieting. There is a time and
place for supplements and vitamins,
but I believe that if you eat for the
environment, and your body is in
balance, you’ll get the nutrients you
need from your food.”
Kate, who is also a qualified Neurolinguistic
programming (NLP)
practitioner, offers packages for her
clients, which can include just the
nutrition side, nutrition and yoga or
just yoga. She offers private, group
and online yoga classes.
“My goal is to identify where the
stress is coming from in your life
and the impact it’s having on your
health. Then I use different protocols
to ‘clean up’ the body, detox and
minimise stress.”
nutritional_alchemy, @kate_arnott_
Kate’s tips for improving
health and managing
your stress:
1. Awareness: Be aware of
how you talk to yourself and
whether your thoughts are
positive are negative. Find
things to appreciate around
you all the times – especially in
moments of negativity (it could
be a flower or a sunset ... just
something small to be thankful
for). The more we practice
doing this, the more we elevate
our state of being and we’ll
naturally make better choices
to match that greater state.
2. Learn to breathe. Be aware
of your breaths and find a
trainer (yoga, pilates or any
fitness trainer) who is breathfocussed
and will help you.
You will eventually carry those
breathing techniques into your
daily life, even when you’re not
exercising.
3. Start slowly. Just take one
step, and one goal, at a time.
We all want to get to our goals
quickly and often our approach
is extreme and not sustainable.
Small, daily changes will
ultimately lead to a sustainable
lifestyle.
4. Get into nature. Nature
is so healing in itself and we
need to realise that the more
we support the environment,
the more it will support us. Eat
for the environment – wellbalanced,
quality-based diet.
Use the produce to make
simple food and don’t get
caught up with fancy recipes
and meals. Simplify.
5. Laugh and have fun. Don’t
become too serious about
your health and over think
everything! Don’t take life too
seriously. Learn a few simple,
good practices and implement
them slowly.
Ballito beauties
The young lady who walks away with the title of Miss Ballito 2021 will need to have more
than just a pretty face. We found out more about the pageant and this year’s top 10 finalists.
During the next stage of the pageant,
the girls will go through an induction
and mentor programme where they
will participate in workshops and be
taught a number of life skills, from life
coaching to goal setting to advice on
healthy living and exercise.
Each contestant has to find two
financial sponsors (all proceeds go
towards Zimbali Rotary and The North
Coast Courier Orphan Fund) and they
have to come up with and implement
their sustainable, community-based
project. There will be a cocktail
evening on 15 July at The Marigold in
Ballito, followed by the final crowning
evening on 6 August at the Simbithi
Country Club. Members of the public
can buy tickets to either of these
events. There is also a prize for the
contestant who gets the most votes
on social media.
A desire to make a difference, being confident and goal-driven and having a
strong passion for community are amongst the criteria that will be considered
when the judges hand over the crown and title of Miss Ballito on the crowning
evening next month.
The Miss Ballito pageant is the biggest fundraising event of the year for Zimbali
Rotary. The contestants not only raise money for the charity organisation
by securing financial sponsors, but they are also required to start their own
sustainable, community-based projects. “Their chosen project is one of the
biggest parts of the judging criteria,” says pageant coordinator Heidie Smith. “The
girls are not only judged on how pretty they look on the crowning evening.”
The initial, interview round has already taken place and Heidie says the judges
chose their top 10 finalists after meeting each entrant individually. This year’s
judges are North Coast Courier publisher and founder Bruce Stephenson,
Enterprise Ilembe acting CEO Cheryl Peters, actress and artist Hannah Grobler,
entrepreneur Ann van Jaarsveld and KwaDukuza head lifeguard, international
surfing judge and surfing SA vice president Bongani Xulu.
“The top 10 finalists were chosen based on how they presented themselves, their
confidence, their goals and passions and their interest in and desire to help the
community.”
The younger you
At Lasersure and Dr Frances Prinsloo Inc, we are often asked if we can stop aging. Unfortunately,
the answer to that is simply, ‘no’. Aging is not just a singular process but has many factors that
contribute to it. Luckily, we can help with slowing the process down and assist in refreshing and
rejuvenating your skin, in order to bring out the best in an already beautiful you!
Due to the aging process being
multifactorial, our approach is a holistic
one, which uses a combination of
therapies to reach our goal. So why
combination therapies? Well, when we
classify aging, we look at the following
features: skin texture and tone, wrinkles,
sagging and volume loss, as well as sun
damage. Therefore, when assessing a
person’s concerns with regards to aging,
we want to address all these signs and
features and use them as a guide for
which therapies are the most suitable to
their specific aging needs.
There are many tools on offer in the
ever-developing aesthetics field and we
are fortunate to be able to offer many
of these to our clients to address their
anti-aging concerns.
These include:
• Injectables: filler, toxin, threads
and mesotherapy. These are used to
diminish fine lines and wrinkles and
to replace volume loss or enhance
features.
• In-house treatments: Microneedling,
PRP, peels (both acidic and alkali),
radiofrequency and various laser
treatments, namely: Limelight for
pigmentation and redness; Laser
Genesis, which is the at the forefront for
antiaging as it has little to no downtime,
is relatively safe in everyone and it can
be used in combination with many
treatments to work in synergy with
them and ND yag Skin tightening.
• Apart from cleansing and moisturizing,
we encourage our patients to use SPF, a
topical antioxidant and retinol for those
in the need.
• Due to our holistic approach, we take
into consideration not only external
factors such as sun and pollution, but
also internal factors, such as hormones.
We can do an in-depth analysis of
hormones and address any imbalances.
Lasersure is an established facility with years of experience in the antiaging industry.
We are a doctor--run facility and our doctors, who have a vast wealth of knowledge
and years of experience in the aesthetic field, are hands-on and involved in getting
your desired outcome. As we are results-driven, it is important to us that we
understand the skin, body and face and what it takes to reach the end goal. Our
therapists are well trained in understanding the skin and its needs and our doctors
and therapists are always willing to answer any questions you may have.
We are proud of the professional environment we have created, where all your
aesthetic needs can be met, but also an environment that is peaceful and nourishing.
So, if you are a ‘toe in the water’ type of person, come and chat to one of our very
knowledgeable therapists (or book a consult with one of our doctors) so they can
assess your concerns and discuss and design a treatment plan that suits your needs
and your budget.
Getting fit … in the garden!
Raise your hand if you’re
a busy, exhausted, unfit
mom who is a little (or
maybe a lot?) intimidated
by the traditional gym
environment? If your hand
is up, then you are exactly
the kind of woman South
African champion athlete
Lauren Cannon wants in
her garden gym.
Mount Edgecombe mother of two
Lauren has gone from being a highperformance
athlete, doing hours
of training every day, to teaching
women who hate exercise just how
amazing the feeling of endorphins
really is and just how much it lifts
your spirit and mental state. And she’s
doing it from her garden!
Lauren was first featured in the Get
It magazine in 2019 when, just six
months after undergoing major foot
surgery and being told that she may
never compete again, she not only
finished first in the KZN Olympic
distance champs, but won the 70.3
Durban Ironman as well.
Lauren loves a challenge and has
learned to weather them well. She
gave birth to her two daughters,
Scarlett and Stella, just 19 months
apart (in 2015 and 2016) and, despite
being told by her doctor that she
would never be able to run more than
5km after her foot surgery, she set
her sights on achieving her goals and
reached them.
But now (like for many of us) her life
has taken a slightly different turn.
Lauren has given up competitive
racing for the time being and has
started a small, intimate personal gym
called Fitness Garden in her garden.
And she absolutely loves it. “It has
been the most incredible transition
and my cup has never been this full.”
22 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga July 2021
Lauren’s aim was to create a gym that offers not only a Covid-friendly
environment, but also a more ‘chilled’ approach to gym. “I believe in working hard
at the gym, but didn’t want to create an environment where people would be
embarrassed about their bodies, fitness abilities or strength.”
During her classes, Lauren says she does absolutely everything with her clients.
She has six identical stations and everyone does the same exercises but with
different weights. “My biggest goal is to show unfit, busy moms the power of
endorphins. There is no better feeling than setting goals and achieving them
– whether they be weight loss, fitness and strength or just enjoying the rush of
endorphins you get after a good one-hour workout.”
Lauren has learned a number of lessons on her journey from professional,
competitive athlete to a females-only gym trainer and has also seen changes in
her own body. “I’ve learnt that looking thin and lean doesn’t mean you are strong
and fit. When I am my strongest and winning events my body is very different to
what it is today. It is very ‘block like’ and, in fact I look much bigger than I look at

the moment. I usually train a minimum of four hours
a day and honestly didn’t look that great in a bikini!
Now doing gym I am much leaner; I hardly do any
cardio, use very light weights and am able to control
my eating as I am not over-exerting myself with
cardio.”
Probably one of the things that stands out most for
Lauren, she says, is how intimidated many women
are by gyms. “They worry that they are not fit
enough, they don’t have the right kit and are very
self-conscious. Those are the people I love getting
in my hands! There is no greater gift for me than to
show them the power of an endorphin-rush!”
While training is an important part of being fit and
healthy and reaching your goals, Lauren admits that
eighty-five to ninety percent of what our bodies
look like starts in the kitchen, which is why she works
closely with a dietician from Johannesburg named
Michelle Hawksworth. “I am not a qualified dietician
(although I have done many many fad diets to keep
myself thin) and I believe this side of the program
needs to be out-sourced. Michelle is amazing.”
Lauren’s biggest focus at Fitness Garden, is ensuring
that her gym is a safe haven for women to come
together - and a happy place for working hard and
having a friendly chat (only after class though!). The
Fitness Garden training days are Monday to Sunday,
R150 per session (your first session is free).
Details: @the_fitnessgarden
There are six identical
workout stations in
Jason Powell is passionate about food.
More than that though, he is passionate
about educating others about good
food. “It doesn’t have to be complicated
or intimidating. It just has to be
made properly with the best possible
ingredients,” says the 41-year old father of
Jason and his wife, Melanie Reeder-Powell,
one of their picnic boxes and find a spot under the trees!)
placements was at a five-star lodge on
a secluded island off of Mozambique
called Vamizi. Jason’s highlight, while
working as the head chef at this
exclusive lodge, was being able to
cook for the late Nelson Mandela
and Graca Machel, who stayed at the
lodge for two weeks.
There were also massive challenges
though, as the island was extremely
remote and even water had to
be brought in on dhows. “It was a
great learning curve. I had to make
everything from scratch, I had to
forage and figure things out. If I
wanted bread, I baked it, if I wanted
veggies, I had to grow them.”
After that Jason got a job as the head
chef at a top hunting and fishing
lodge situated on a fjord on the west
coast of Norway. When Jason returned to South Africa for a wedding in 2007 he
met the woman who would one day become his wife.
Originally from Umtata, Melanie is a qualified and highly experienced magazine
journalist and published author. When they met, Mel was living in Johannesburg,
working as the beauty editor at a top national magazine. “I loved the lifestyle I
was leading in Johannesburg and I loved my job, but I had started to feel like I
needed something different.”
Melanie studied English Literature at Rhodes university and did a post-graduate
degree in Publishing at Wits. After working on some of the biggest magazine
titles in the country, she was commissioned by Penguin Random House SA
to the write the biography of a fascinating KZN-based sangoma named Elliot
Ndlovu, called A Sangoma’s Story.
Jason and Mel got married in 2009 and decided to move to Nelspruit the
following year. “We wanted a fresh start and had heard that there may be
catering opportunities in the Lowveld.”
They opened their first Food Fundi – a coffee shop and deli - with just four tables
in April 2011. It didn’t take long for the cafe and the catering side of the business
to grow.
“People loved our recipes and our approach to food. We make everything, from
the bread to the brownies and the chutneys and relishes, from scratch – and we
still use most of those original recipes today,” says Jason.
The business grew steadily and after a few years, it had transformed into a
140-seater restaurant. They opened a second cafe at the private hospital, where
they were also doing the catering for all the staff and patients. Jason and Mel
lived in Nelspruit for seven years, during which time they had their two children,
Georgina and Samuel.
When an opportunity presented itself – in the form of opening a new Ocean
Basket franchise in Ballito in 2017 - Mel and Jason decided to give it a go. At the
time, they were struggling with both children being constantly ill and in and out
of hospital. Their doctor, who wasn’t able to diagnose the kids, suggested they
simply try moving to a different area.
“We really liked the Ocean Basket franchise and the family-owned business’ ethos
resonated with us. It’s an authentic brand and one we knew we could get on
board with,” says Jason. While they have faced massive challenges (like massive
damage from a raging storm in 2019
and lockdown in 2020), their Ocean
Basket branch has done exceptionally
well and is now considered one of the
restaurant chain’s flagship stores.
During lockdown, the Sugar Rush Park
shareholders asked Mel and Jason
to take over the restaurant. “We were
keen for another opportunity and
it just made sense. People want to
spend time in an outdoor, healthy,
fresh-air environment.” They decided
to open another Food Fundi.
Having revived their timeless, tried
and tested (and loved) recipes, the
couple have successfully run the
restaurant for just over a year – and it
continues to grow from strength to
strength.
Almost everything is made from
scratch. “What I can’t make, I will
source as locally as possible,” says
Jason. The deli side of the business is
also growing and Jason has his own
smoker on site, where he smokes
olives and even cauliflower! He makes
atchar and pestos and they sell
ready-to-go picnic boxes, filled with
beautiful cheeses, parma ham and
homemade relishes!
Investing in their staff is one of Mel
and Jason’s top priorities and they
have spent a lot of time working hard
to fine-tune the service and systems
in place at the restaurant. “We believe
in serving simple, tasty food. We make
sure we get the basics right and don’t
overcomplicate things.”
Perfect chicken & pizza!
Delicious chicken and the some of the tastiest wood-fired pizzas we’ve ever had …
the Get It girls were invited for lunch at Umhlanga’s yummiest new spot!
Text: Leah Shone
Perched on the corner in Umhlanga’s
bustling village centre, the newly
opened Bird & Co store is a great spot
to sit back with a glass of wine or cold
beer and enjoy a delicious meal. We
know, because we tried it!
Owners and long-time Durban
restaurateurs, Derryck Myers and Alan
Lazarus (who also happen to own
the Butcher Boys in the same street)
invited the Get It girls to experience
a selection of tasty treats from their
menu and Alan sat down for a quick
chat with us while we were there.
“I’ve been in the restaurant industry
for 50 years and I’ve never served food
like this. It’s freshly prepared, tasty
and easy going,” says the Umhlanga
franchise co-owner.
With six branches around the country,
four of which are in KZN, the trendy
Bird & Co brand has become popular
on the North Coast. The Umhlanga
branch offers the same, absolutely
to-die-for favourites that the Ballito
store first introduced to our palates.
They also recently just took home the
title of KZN’s best Peri-Peri chicken,
bestowed upon them by the well-known Facebook group, GBN (Good, Bad &
Nasty).
The secret, Alan says, is in the quality of the ingredients ... and those absolutely
delicious sauces! “We don’t skimp on anything and the quality of our ingredients
is very important to us.”
After being served our drinks, our team lunch started off with a few slices of
pizza. We ordered the Capri (mozzarella, bacon, feta, caramelised onion, avo and
rocket) and the Bird & Co (mozzarella, peri mayo, chicken, chorizo, caramelised
onion and rocket). Both of these wood-fired oven pizzas were crisp, fresh and full
of flavour … and paired perfectly with an ice-cold glass of white wine!
Chicken, of course, is the hero of the menu at Bird & Co and Alan took the liberty
26 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga July 2021

of ordering us a smorgasbord of dishes to share. We tried
the deboned chilli-peri chicken, the deboned chicken
thighs on a skewer, chicken wings and the crumbed
chicken strips! Sides included the yummiest lime
coleslaw, fries and rice. Everything was super tasty and
the braver of us even took advantage of the ‘extra hot’
chilli sauce we had on the side!
What blew us away more than anything was the
incredible value for money of each of these dishes. At just
R110, the scrumptious half deboned chicken with a side
is an absolute steal, as is the chicken burger and chips for
just R65 and the three deboned thighs for just R85.
There are veggie options for the non-chicken eaters, such
as the halloumi wrap or halloumi burger and there are
salads for those looking for something on the healthier
side.
Something else we love about Bird & Co is its affiliation
with our favourite locally-made ice cream brand, Scoop.
Bird & Co Umhlanga is the only branch to have a whole
Scoop freezer in the store – so you can enjoy a yummy
scoop or two (or take a tub home) after your meal!
Having been in the Durban restaurant industry for so
many years, Alan says it’s been wonderful to have had
such great support since they opened this store three
months ago. “It is such a great product and, after chatting
to each customer, I know I can always walk away feeling
confident and proud of the food we are serving.”
avo-licious
winter goodness
Celebrate the 2021 avo season by adding an
avo (or two) to your family’s winter meals.
There are the buttery, creamy, green-skinned avo
varieties … Fuerte, Edranol, Ryan, Reed and Pinkerton.
And then there’s the rich, nutty, dark-skinned Hass,
Maluma Hass and Lamb Hass. It’s hard to choose a
favourite, but we don’t have to. While we love the fact
that South African avos are available almost all year
round, we’re fortunate they are in plentiful supply in
winter. Why? Well, besides tasting heavenly, they may offer
immune support in the colder months. Did you know avos
are high in copper, a source of fibre (5.3g fibre per 100g) and
contain antioxidants? Copper is known to support immune
system function. Fibre is essential for good gut health …
around 65% of the immune system is housed in the gut, which
regulates immunity and helps to protect against invading
pathogens that cause disease. Antioxidants are powerful food
components that maintain and regulate immune function, and
avos contain the antioxidant nutrients lycopene and
beta-carotene. So not only are avos delicious, they’re also a
source of nutrients, and they’re versatile and super quick and
easy to add to almost any meal.
TIKTOK BAKED FETA PASTA WITH AVOCADO
Serves 4
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 45 minutes
Ingredients:
1 large or 2 small avocados; 50g assorted cocktail
tomatoes; 4 garlic cloves, crushed; 150ml
avocado oil or extra-virgin olive oil, divided in
half; sea salt and freshly ground black pepper;
1 block (approximately 200g) Greek feta cheese;
½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional);
300g dried pasta, medium-size shape; fresh basil
leaves, for serving.
Method:
Preheat the oven to 200°C. In a baking dish,
combine half the oil, tomatoes, garlic and
seasoning and toss to coat. Place the block of
feta in the centre of the dish and sprinkle with
chilli flakes, if using. Bake in preheated oven for
40 minutes, until the tomatoes burst and the feta
is golden brown.
While the tomato is cooking, boil the pasta in
salted water until al dente, drain and set aside.
Peel and dice the avocado.
Remove tomatoes and feta from the oven, toss
with the pasta and diced avocado and
drizzle with the remaining oil.
Serve hot in bowls and garnish with fresh
basil leaves.
It was their design of this modern, eco-friendly
home that lead to a Ballito-based architectural
firm recently being shortlisted for an International
Design and Architecture award. We chatted to
architect and founder, Gerhard Breedt.
34 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga July 2021

“Every site has a has an essence. A story it wants to tell and a way it wants to be
treated. This site was no different.” Gerhard Architect founder Gerhard Breedt
loves what he does.
He started his company 16 years ago in office which, he says, was so small
that he had to meet clients in the coffee shop across the road! Now his firm
is receiving acknowledgement on an international platform and he is being
recognised for his environmentally-aware, integrated approach to design. We
chatted to him about this incredible Mount Richmore Estate home.
What prompted you to enter this particular property into the
awards? We were actually contacted and asked if we would consider entering
this home in two categories (Luxury Residence - Global Award and Project Value
of 1 - 2.5million Pounds) after a social media post. The fact that the property was
picked up on an international platform and recognised was what prompted us
to pursue the nomination to the next level.
Tell us about this home and the client’s brief to you when you
set out to design this home? This is a permanent family home, but the
owners wanted it to have the feel of a holiday home where one can ‘escape’
to from day-to-day stresses and routine. Our goal was to design a modern but
timeless home with clean design lines, floating planes and integrated, eco-friendly
elements and timberworks. We focussed on creating open plan living areas,
a sense of ‘arrival’ and integrating the sea and forest views. There are four bedrooms
(all en-suite) and an open plan living (kitchen, dining, lounge) area, all of
which seamlessly lead out to the large outside veranda. There is a private study/
office space, a second lounge and balconies off of all the bedrooms. There is
also a massive lap pool and we maximized the beautiful ocean and inland bush
views, while still ensuring privacy.
How did the location and the look and feel of the estate influence
the design? The site has beautiful sea views, as well views of a stunning
forest greenbelt. We wanted it to feel as though you were in the forest when you
enter through the double-volume foyer with floating bridge, which we staggered
slightly to maximise the sea views. Every estate has an ethos and code to
create a ‘standard’ to be upheld. The Mount Richmore Estate architectural code
allows for quite a modern, coastal interpretation and expressiveness.
Architect Gerhard Breedt
How did you achieve the
almost seamless indoor/
outdoor flow of the home?
Integrated inside-outside living was
a non-negotiable directive from the
clients. Large sliding glass panels that
‘disappear’ and a lot of large glass
elements on the view sides blur the
lines between the inside and outside
to a large extent. It also helped greatly
that there was no level change between
the inside and outside.
What are some of your favourite
design elements of
this home? We love the design as a
whole and how every element plays
its part. We do, however, feel that a
home must have a sense of arrival
and just love the entrance detail, from
when you open the massive doors
and then just experience the forest
right in front of you. Strong horizontal
planes and large glass areas further
enhance the integrated feel between
the home and its surroundings.
What does it mean to you to
have been shortlisted for
these awards? As a small, passionate
firm receiving international
recognition means a lot. It’s so great
knowing that your architectural
abilities are not only being recognised
and showcased, but also confirms
our theory that limitations are just
a self-imposed concept … and that
‘David and Goliath’ do indeed fight on
the same battlefield!
Vibrant
winter
We’re planting …Verbena ‘Firehouse’ for vibrant Winter and Spring colour on
the patio and in the garden. It is a spreading verbena, up to 55cm, that works
well as a filler in mixed containers and baskets, as well as a ground cover in
gardens. Start it in a pot for colour on a warm, sunny patio that is protected
from frost. As a garden plant, it needs frost protection and if planted now will
provide Spring into Summer colour. It tolerates heat, grows in ordinary garden
soil that drains well and likes regular, but not excessive watering. Its wide range
of colours makes it easy to add to any garden colour scheme. Also resistant
to powdery mildew. New colours include ‘Blue Fizz’ and ‘Violet Wink’. Details:
Garden tasks for July
• Prune bush roses from 20 July to the first week in August.
Cut back bushes by one-third, removing
dead wood and old stems, criss-crossing and weak growth.
Enrich the soil after pruning with compost, fertilise and
water well.
• In dry areas, water the compost heap once a month to
keep it active.
• Fertilise pansies, violas, petunias, and primulas to keep
them flowering.
• Water veggies once a week and feed once a month with a
liquid fertiliser.
• Cover tender plants with frost cloth if very cold weather is
predicted.
• Water vegetables and herbs in containers twice a week.
• Continue to protect conifers from the Italian cypress
aphid with an organic insecticide or use insecticide
granules sprinkled around the base of the conifer.
Veggie of the month
There is nothing sweeter than eating garden peas from
the pod. ‘Tom Thumb’ is a dwarf bush
pea from RAW seeds that is
fun for the kids to plant in
containers or small spaces.
Plants grow 30cm high and
10cm wide, which means
that you can plant them
10cm apart along a mini
trellis. Pods are best when
harvested young, within 50
days from germination. The
peas are sweet and crunchy.
Tips for garden peas
• Grow in full sun. • Plant in
fertile, compost-enriched soil
or potting soil. • Keep the soil
moist, especially for plants
in containers. • Fertilise once
a month. • Keep on picking,
especially to encourage new
pods. Details: rawliving.co.za
Retirement planning …
an important checklist
A well-planned retirement is key to the comfortable, secure and stress-free life you
envisage. By giving it a great deal of thought ahead of time, fine-tuning your needs
and wants, and exploring the numerous options out there, you’ll be perfectly placed to
find the perfect solution.
For many, retirement is a somewhat daunting concept. The secret is in playing an
active role in the planning – recognising this chapter of life as a reality, viewing it
positively, and celebrating the opportunities it presents. It goes without saying that
financial planning is the most important factor and talking to your financial planner is
a crucial step when looking into the future. It’s not only about the rental or purchase
of a retirement unit or home, living expenses, covering of levies, rates and utilities, but
also factoring in the unknown – any potential health or care expenses. Once you have
a clear picture of your financial situation, you’ll want to compile a personal checklist of
non-negotiable and ‘nice-to-have’ elements. You might want to choose a retirement
village close to where you live now – near friends and familiar places – you’ll certainly
want to be near family. Geoff Perkins of Collins Residential, the developers of Mount
Edgecombe Retirement Village, shares a quick checklist to assist with getting the
planning process started:
• Consider your family: being near them or at least near to an airport is important to
consider.
• Hobbies and like-minded communities: being surrounded by a community who share
common interests and values greatly enhances quality of life. If the idea of neighbourly
activities and events such as gardening, walking or group exercise has appeal, then
planning to settle in a community-orientated estate should be factored in.
• If wanderlust is important: a secure, lock-up-and-go is the ideal solution.
• Pets: For many, finding a pet-friendly retirement solution is at the top of the list.
• Do you enjoy socialising? A retirement community can offer wonderful socialising
opportunities, companionship and ways to meet new people.
• For the active: golf, tennis, a gym. For many, staying fit and active is non-negotiable, so
ensure your estate shortlist gives you access to these facilities.
• Do you bird watch, hike or walk? Similarly, you’d want to live on an eco-estate or near
safe ‘wild’ areas with trails or boardwalks. The North Coast offers a range of estates that
are based on this principle.
• Health matters: whether or not you have existing health care concerns, the option of
having access to a full-service health care facility should be a careful consideration.
• Security is a reality: most villages and estates have good security, but think about your
latter years - panic buttons and response services should be jotted down.
• Facilities: If you don’t drive or have a
car, plan to retire in an estate where
regular trips to local shopping centres
and outings could be important to you.
Similarly, a clubhouse, hairdresser or a
coffee shop on site could be beneficial.
• Family fundamentals: visitor’s parking,
whether you can comfortably entertain
and even planning to ensure your
grandchildren/ friends are able to stay
overnight is often overlooked, so be sure
to add this important item to the list.
You will definitely have a host of
questions and considerations that
pertain specifically to your particular
lifestyle, Geoff says. “Jot them down.
All that information helps you build a
picture of where you’d like to be, and
what facilities you need when the time
TRELLIDOR ESTATE SHUTTER
BEAUTIFUL ESTATE SHUTTER
If your window treatments are starting to look tatty or old fashioned and you’re looking for a fresh approach, consider replacing them with
shutters. They’ll update your home instantly, with their sleek, modern lines and classy look. Shutters do more than just look beautiful. You can
adjust the louvres to get the right amount of privacy, sunlight, and air flow. Or close the louvres to block out irritating noise and to stop
monkeys and baboons from getting inside your home to help themselves to your fruit basket. Louvre shutters vary in design and material, so
do some research and find the type that best suits your circumstances.

From the elegant, stylish décor to the
prime location and flowing indoor
and outdoor living areas, there is
simply nothing not to love about
this home. It is contemporary coastal
design at its best.
Having recently been bought for
holiday rental purposes, the fivebedroom
beachfront property was
touched up and made ‘holiday ready’
by KZN interior design guru, Lee
Moon of Lee Moon Interior Design.
“The previous owner has such
impeccable taste that we really
haven’t had to change a lot,” says
Lee. “She left a lot of the furniture
and décor behind and we simply
‘filled the gaps’ where she had taken
meaningful pieces with her.”
Having been in the interior design
industry for over 30 years, Lee says
it is very important to her to get to
know her clients and understand
their needs before embarking on any
project. She leans towards timeless,
classic furniture pieces, which can
be accentuated with trendy, soft
furnishings.
The kitchen has a lovely, social seating
area with large glass doors that open
up onto the sea-facing patio
There are five bedrooms. Three are
downstairs and an elevator takes you up
to the second floor where the other two
bedrooms and living areas are situated.
Because the home is being used
predominantly for holiday rental
purposes, the new owners wanted to
depersonalise the interior and give it
more of a classic, holiday look and feel.
Mostly, this just meant changing the
odd wallpaper, adding a few soft
furnishings and accessories and lots
of greenery. The kitchen, however, did
get a full revamp.
“We opened the kitchen up and
created a wonderful, social seating
area around the island. The large,
open-shelved pantry is the perfect
place to store all the crockery, cutlery
and table décor, making it easy for
holidaymakers to find what they need.”
The kitchen, lounge and master
bedroom all open up onto the most
exquisite verandah with 180-degree
sea views. Stylishly decorated in the
classic ‘Ralph Lauren blue and white’,
the furniture and décor in this space
fits its location perfectly.
Lee moved the shelving unit that
was in the kitchen and turned it into
a beautiful feature in the living area
between the lounge and dining room.
This is something, she says, she has
become synonymous with. “A a strong
part of my décor ethos and one of my
strengths is using what clients already
have in new and interesting ways.”
The home has five bedrooms, all
of which are en-suite and each is
uniquely and stylishly decorated.
Three are situated on the ground
floor and the two others, including
the impressive main bedroom, are
upstairs. There is also an elevator,
making this a wheelchair-friendly
home.
The open plan lounge and dining
room lead onto a beautiful courtyard
and swimming pool, where the
owners have created a ‘mini beach’,
complete with beach sand and tall
palm trees.
It’s not hard to imagine perching
yourself on one of the built-in
wooden benches with a cocktail in
hand or curling up with a book in
the swinging chair that hangs in the
stunning, roofed terrace leading off
the bar. This home definitely has all
the right holiday feels and is available
for holiday rental through Luxury
Coastal Escapes.
The home offers wonderful outside
spaces both in the front (sea-facing)
and the back of the house
Young musical
prodigy
A young Durban North musician is making waves in the music industry with a song he
wrote and produced during lockdown aimed at helping people focus on the positive.
As his young fingers work the
fretboard and he strums his Ibanez
electric guitar, Ethan Briggeman is a
quiet, ‘no drama’ performer. But still
waters run deep.
The 12-year-old musician attracted a
great deal of attention after writing
and recording his inspiring song,
titled ‘Change Your Mind’, during the
Covid lockdown. The song focusses
on optimism for the future and sees
Ethan on lead vocals and rap, as he
delivers some impressive electric
guitar work. “Like most kids, I had a
toy guitar when I was very young,
but I think my parents must have
seen something more in me than
just a little kid jamming, because they
bought me my first acoustic guitar
when I was just five years old.”
At the age of nine, a family member
gave Ethan his first electric guitar
and from there things just took off!
“I am really passionate about playing
guitar and grateful to be part of a
family of musicians who are also my
biggest supporters. My sister, Emily,
plays the keyboard very well and
my dad, Edwin, plays the trumpet
as a hobby. He was in a cover band
in the Netherlands called Zenith of
Zeal for a few years until he moved
to South Africa. He also played in a
Glenn Miller-style big band before
conducting that band and he still
plays for fun now and then. My mom,
Eloise, is our organiser and greatest
support when my dad, sister and I
sometimes perform as the Briggeman
Band.”
In 2018 Ethan started weekly lessons
at Destiny Music Academy (DMA) in La
The first song I mastered on guitar was
Apache by The Shadows. It’s uploaded to my
YouTube channel along with a number of
other covers I have enjoyed trying my hand at.
Lucia. That same year, he played his electric guitar at a solo jam and was part of a
band in the show, ‘The Greatest Show’, where he played electric guitar and sang
a duet. The Grade 7 Reddam House Umhlanga learner was also recently asked to
sing an inspiring song for their junior executive induction ceremony and he sang
Hall of Fame by The Script.
“The first song I mastered on guitar was Apache by The Shadows. It’s uploaded to
my YouTube channel (which was launched in July last year) along with a number
of other covers I have enjoyed trying my hand at. I really enjoy music that’s catchy
or funky to play like the music from the Beetles. I’m a huge Lenny Kravitz fan
because he does a variety of songs and his technical ability with solos is amazing
and inspiring, so naturally when it comes to the ultimate guitar I’d like to own…
it’s a Gibson Les Paul… because Lenny has one!”
Speaking of inspiration, during the first lockdown Ethan desperately wanted to
inspire the world and encourage people to focus on a brighter future. He began
to play around on the keyboard (yes he can do that too!) and his guitar and
composed the tune to the song he titled Change Your Mind.
“It took only a few hours to match the words with the music, but two months to
fine-tune the song before it premiered on his YouTube channel in December last
year.
The video was choreographed and edited by Patrick Royal and features
appearances by Ethan’s family and a few close friends.
Apart from becoming a successful song writer, singer and guitar player, Ethan,
who has more than just musical talents, would like to be an Olympic champion
for track and field athletics and a successful businessman to show people that
hard work does pay off.
The cross country champ, who belongs to Aspire Athletics, has competed in the
Tinman Triathlon Series Mini and is a two-time SA Judo gold medallist. A big feat
for a little kid!
Change Your Mind is available for download on various platforms and the promo
video can be viewed on Ethan’s YouTube channel: Ethan Briggeman. He can be
PROMOTION
And they can, with RITES, a fuss-free, local brand that’s perfect for boys and girls
Great skin ... in five easy steps
Prevention’s better than cure
Rather than trying to cure acne, teens should rather
preempt it ... starting a skincare routine early to prevent
acne and blemishes. RITES is a small, easy-to-use South
African brand, which is cruelty-free and is brilliant for
boys and girls.
Your 10 minute RITES routine
Being a teenager can be stressful, so the last thing you need
to be worrying about is your skincare regime. To save you the
hassle, RITES has put together the ultimate 10-minute routine
to combat everything from pimples to oiliness. All you need
is five minutes in the morning and five minutes again in the
evening to marvel at your skin! Ready. Set. Go!
Cleanse and Exfoliate: 1 minute
Start your routine off by cleansing and exfoliating your
skin. Gently massage the Foam Fighter foaming face
wash over your skin. It is the ultimate daily face wash that
fights to remove impurities while leaving your skin feeling
fresh, renewed, and matte. You can also combine the
Power Powder exfoliating powder to gently buff away the
unhealthy cells for a noticeably smoother, clearer, and more
refined complexion.
1
2
3
4
5
Cleanse carefully. At least twice a day.
Wash off make-up before bed. Allow your skin
to breathe at night without clogging your pores.
Control oil. Even if your skin is oily, you still
need to moisturise. Think hydration rather than
excessive oil production.
Exfoliate. You need to exfoliate once or twice
a week with a gentle, oil-free exfoliator.
Keep your hands clean. Every time you touch
your face, you are spreading oil, dirt, and
bacteria that can turn into a breakout! Always
wash your hands before touching your face
and regularly clean and disinfect surfaces that
touch your face, like your phone!
Treat: 3 minutes
Next, you will tone the skin with our refreshing toning
wipes. The Fresh Crusader wipes provide intensive
cleaning for problem areas such as the pesky T-zone.
Infused with witch hazel, cucumber and aloe vera, these
wipes help to unclog the pores and provide hydration in
one simple swipe. After toning, apply Disappearing Act
to specific problem areas and allow time for the product
to penetrate the skin. It has been designed to remove
excess oil and bacteria, while using natural elements to
reduce inflammation.
Moisturise and Protect: 1 minute
Whether you are off to school, or getting ready to hit the
sheets, you will want to make sure your face is moisturised.
In the morning, use RITES Control Freak SPF30 to
moisturise and protect the skin. At night, use the Smart
Hydrator to repair your skin while you sleep. Be sure to
apply the moisturiser to the face and neck, starting on the
cheeks and spreading outwards and upwards, and if you are
fast, then you may just have a few seconds to spare!
Get into the habit of following the above steps each day for
a solid and effective skincare routine.
Little reads
Looking for some great books to motivate reading? Here
are a handful of fabulous kiddies reads (with giveaways)
written by local authors that will open the doorway to
turning your little one into a voracious reader.
My Family of Superheroes
“Every child, irrespective of gender or
race, will find themselves in situations
that test their self-confidence and
courage,” says author Zinhle T.
Matthews. “Wouldn’t it be amazing
if they had a fool-proof, lifelong tool
to use in these circumstances? A
potent mantra which could lift them
above self-doubt and fear into a
position of power, well equipped
to take on the world – and win!” Her
beautifully illustrated book, My Family
of Superheroes, focuses on how
positive phrases can help children
realise their inner strength and
potential. It tells the story of Precious
who, inspired by her mother, uses
positive affirmation to overcome her
insecurities and doubts. The book is
available at Amazon, Ethnikids, Book
Circle Capital and other selected
Luna Learns About Viruses
Learning about the coronavirus and
overwhelming for us all, especially
children. With this in mind, Hillcrest
mother of two, Shareez Bagaria,
children Luna (4) and Shay (11). Her
handwritten notes have been turned
book is written in a simple rhyming
style, is easy to read and remember
and is designed to be both a teacher’s
big, bold, beautiful illustrations are
the artwork of Shareez’s niece, Gianna
Gone Little Cat
Gone Little Cat is Blythedale author,
Gustav Preller’s fifth book. But it’s
his first for children. Aimed at 10 to
15-year-olds, the book (which tells
the story of a highly-pedigreed,
pampered cat who gets lost in a
forest and has to learn to live in the
wild) has been very well received by
both children and adults who’ve been
the storytellers to little ones. All the
animals in the story have names and
personalities. They all talk and the
dialogue is great! Their very existence
is threatened by powerful predators
... humans … and the animals
embark on a fateful course of action.
While the environmental theme of
deforestation is contemporary and
relevant, Gone Little Cat is also about
growing up, understanding that one
doesn’t have to be the same to be
friends and, through courage and
resilience, finding one’s self in a world
that contains both good and bad.
It’s beautifully illustrated by a Kenyan
artist, David Wachania, the book is
available at all Ballito book stores and
most book stores nationwide for R195.
Smashing & painting!
Sometimes you just need to let go and have a little creative, expressive fun! This month
The Get It girls excitedly getting
ready to smash some stuff up!
Such a great way to
let go of frustrations!
Smash It
What is it? Everyone’s had that moment … you know the one where all you
want to do is just let loose and smash something!? Well now you can - in a safe,
controlled and super fun environment! The Smash It smash room (and splash
room!) is owned by two Ballito moms who came across the unique concept
while on holiday in Clarens. They had so much fun that they decided to start up
something similar Ballito!
How it works: On arrival you decide if you’re either going to ‘smash it’ in
the smash room or ‘splash it’ in the splash room! Or do both! The smash room
is basically a safe, enclosed area where you can ‘go wild’ and smash up empty
bottles, old, unfixable appliances, unwanted crockery and pretty much anything
your heart desires! Safety comes first, of course, so before you enter the smash
room, the team help you gear up from head to toe with gum boots and full
protective wear. Then you just have to walk in, pick your weapon (a cricket or
baseball bat maybe...?) and start smashing! The music gets turned up loud and
for 10 minutes and you can literally let all your frustrations go! The UV paint
splash room is a little more ‘timid’, but no less fun! After putting on your goggles
The splash room is just as much fun,
with awesome UV paint, loud music
and space to just ‘let loose’!
and protective poncho you enter the
room which is covered from floor to
ceiling in luminous paint. Each person
is given a canvas, paints and brushes.
Again, the music gets turned up and
you can let your crazy, creative juices
flow … even painting your friends if
you like!
Get It girls’ verdict: Yes, yes,
yes we will be back! The smash room
was a massive hit – and frustrations
were definitely released! One or two
of us actually preferred the splash
room even more though – especially
when we started flinging paint at one
another! We had so many laughs and
the entire evening was loads of fun
and just great food for the soul!
laughed as we let our creativity flow.
Choosing a ceramic to paint proved
hard for one or two of us (we wanted
to do them all!) and committing to a
design and colours felt a bit scary for
the less naturally ‘artistic’ members of
the team. But, once we got into it, all
nerves disappeared and we just let go
and had fun! It was like therapy! We
collected our fired pieces a few days
later … and we were all delighted.
We will most certainly be back to do
more!
The Pottery
What is it? If you haven’t yet visited
The Pottery at the Lifestyle Centre
Ballito, then it’s time you did. The Pottery
is a beautiful, arty space that is all about
unique items, creativity and good
coffee! A pottery store with a difference,
The Pottery is both a retail space and a
spot where you can choose a ceramic,
grab a brush and paint your own plate,
bowl or ornament to take home.
How it works: It’s hard not to feel
inspired in this gorgeous, alfresco space.
You can’t help but want to pick up a
brush and just go for it! The process is
easy: simply select an item from the
shelves (they have a wonderful range
of side and dinner plates, mugs, bowls,
platters and little trinkets to choose
from), take a seat, order a delicious
beverage from the menu and get
painting! The Pottery staff (who are all
incredibly helpful) will bring you a box
of paints, brushes and stencils and then
you just have to decide on your design
and get creative! After your work of art
has been completed, you hand it over
to be fired in the kilns (this takes a few
days) and then return to collect your
masterpiece!
We loved choosing and
painting our ceramics together
Discover ... a gem in the city
A Cape escape is always a treat. And even more so when you choose a city-chic hotel.
We’ve just spent a week in Cape Town
… and struggle to understand why
anyone would want to travel abroad
when there’s such an incredible
destination right here in our own
country. It’s a spot that – no matter
how many times you visit – simply
never gets stale.
The basics stay the same … ‘the
mountain’ (only ever said with that
iconic Capetonian drawl), the buzz
along the Camps Bay restaurant
strip, the icy sea only fools and
born-locals enjoy (then again, maybe
we should take a lesson from them
… a 15-minute cold-water swim
apparently has massive health
benefits – from increasing your
metabolism, helping with circulation,
relieving stress, enhancing your
mood, boosting your immune system
and helping you to sleep better).
But once you’ve done the 15 minutes
of hell in the cold water, the cable car,
tried tandem paragliding off Signal
Hill and Lion’s Head, and kayaked
along the coastline looking for
dolphins, there’s always something
new to discover and explore. And it’s
one of the only major cities – if not
the only city – in SA where staying
in the centre of town is not only safe
but also massively desirable. This is
why we booked into, and loved, The
Onyx Hotel.
This cosmopolitan blend of hotel
and residential accommodation sits
proudly on Heerengracht Street, Cape
Town’s oldest thoroughfare, and with
its bold, architectural features and
resemblance to the rare, striking black
sapphire, it’s a real gem … offering
a chic city on par with apartment
offerings around the globe but infused
with authentic South African vibrancy
and authenticity.
What’s there to love? What’s not to?
The rooms are large, spacious and
edgy … with everything you need
to make your stay as enjoyable as
possible. The location is spot on …
it’s on Cape Town’s Foreshore, so
right in the hub of the city’s dynamic
urban lifestyle. There are bright lights
and city vibes, great restaurants on
every corner and bustling bars. Not
that you have to leave the hotel to
find a place to play. The hotel’s YU
Restaurant and Bar on the 4th floor
mixes up Insta-ready cocktails – the
Africa Rising City of Gold cocktail with
its candyfloss and sexy molten gold
surface is particularly photogenic.
Sexy city living … a blend of hotel
and apartments to suit all lifestyles.
You’re in Cape Town … a mountain
view is non-negotiable!
Don’t venture any further for dinner either
… there’s an exotic menu of Asian-style
tapas served with a side of a fabulous
cityscape view.
The hedonistic traveller looking for some
pampering can book an hour or so in the
Sanctuary Spa at The Onyx. Ask, when
you’re there, which packages are on
special … they’re always a treat (and a
well-priced one). Book a massage, order
a bottle of bubbly … and, after your
treatment, relax at the indoor-outdoor
heated pool. Bliss.
For out-of-towners wanting to explore
more of the wine and brandy options
in the winelands, The Onyx’s concierge
team has teamed up with Ilios Tours
and can create individualised day-trip
itineraries. Think a fascinating visit to Van
Ryn’s Distillery in Stellenbosch, KWV’s
House of Fire in Paarl and Oude Molen
Distillery in the Elgin Valley, or a wine
tasting and lunch at the many heritage
wine estates that the Cape has to offer,
including Simonsig.
If a Cape break appeals, The Onyx always
has winter packages and promotions
worth exploring … and the hotel works
equally well for business and leisure
travellers, for singles, couples and families.
