NEWS LATEST & GREATEST O’ NATURALE QHA REVIEW | 10 In a time when craft beers and small batch breweries are increasingly seeing their products being served in mainstream venues across the State, it would seem “craft” or “natural” wines could be next. Trying to find a singular definition of natural wine is not as simple as you would imagine. The challenge comes mainly from what level of intervention is allowed in the farming of the grapes through to the fermenting of the wines. Given it’s wine we’re talking about, perhaps the 2020 definition agreed to by the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food is a good place to start. Their new category of wine, Vin Methode Nature, came into being just over 12 months ago. To qualify for the use of the Vin Methode Nature tag, the wines must be made from hand-picked grapes that carry organic certification (produced without chemicals) and can only be fermented using indigenous yeasts – with thermovinification, reverse osmosis, flash pasteurisation and cross-flow filtration banned from use. The French definition allows up to 30mg/l of sulphur dioxide after fermentation. Those that chose to go without sulphur are able to add that to their labels and use the term vin methode nature sans sulfites ajoutes (natural wine without sulphur). Natural wine ferments in the bottle. Without filtration, barrelling or the addition of much, if any, preservative (sulphur dioxide) the wine’s colour and taste can differ from batch to batch, bottle to bottle. While natural wine appears to have be flavour of the month in recent media reports and on social media, in Australia, the natural wine scene is not exactly new. From 2013 to 2017 the annual Rootstock Festival in Sydney attracted wine makers and wine drinkers from around the country keen to celebrate all things natural on the wine scene. When the event ceased in 2018 as finances tightened during the Global Financial Crisis, it’s founders spoke proudly of having raised awareness for a style of winemaking that was now accepted as being part of the broader mix of wine production in Australia. Now, as we all live our lives via screens at home during COVID-19 lockdowns, it’s likely its lack of preservatives and chemical intervention has given it a lift with the “healthy living” social influencers, pushing it into our social media feeds, and its marketing, devoid of classic wine-making terms and associated snobbery have made it popular with the under 30s who are simply looking for something interesting to drink. When it comes to natural wines, the boutique style appears to have hit a note with small scale wine makers across the country. Names to look out for include: Hochkirch Wines (Victoria), Paxton (McLaren Vale, South Australia), Rosnay Garage (NSW), Ngarto and Lucy M wines. Anton van Klopper, one of the original natural wine makers in Australia and producer of the Lucy Margaux natural wine range out of South Australia explains his take on natural wines on the website for his products. “Natural wine is simply wine made from grapes,” he writes. “But it is so much more, because natural is not greed, capitalism, chemical or control. It is a metamorphosis to allow the archetypal beverage to form. “I’m proud to be amongst the makers of these wines. Even though there are high risk of volatile acidity, mousiness, Brettanomyces and lactic acid bacteria fermentation, it is enlivening to learn the skills and walk with nature. “I am thankful for those who support natural wine. It is good for your body and creates a more beautiful world.”
LATEST & GREATEST EMERGING VARIETY WINE CHALLENGE 2021 We’ve all heard of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but what about Tempranillo, Arinto, and Verdelho? The Queensland and Australian International Emerging Variety Wine Challenge 2021 was held on Friday, June 25 in Brisbane to celebrate the best of the best in the newer wine categories with local wines judged against originals from the country’s in which the variety originated. Whilst Pinot Grigio, Verdelho and their ilk are new in Australia, they have distinguished histories in their respective home locations in Europe, prompting the creation of this competition to see how our local winemakers stacked up against the originals.
