SCIENCE
AND INDUSTRY
MUSEUM
The Science and Industry Museum is devoted to inspiring visitors
through ideas that change the world, from the Industrial Revolution
to today and beyond. Located on the site of the oldest surviving
passenger railway station, in the heart of the world’s first industrial
city – today it is alive with innovative discoveries in science and
technology.
Highlights include; the Textiles Gallery charting the history of the
cotton industry that fuelled the Industrial Revolution complete with working mill machines; a working replica of the
“Manchester Baby” – the world’s first stored programme computer; the Experiment Gallery where families can get handson
with experiments and puzzles; temporary exhibitions featuring everything from the early years of Factory Records to
the major new Cancer Revolution exhibition due to open in October; as well as events throughout the year celebrating
the science around us every day.
The museum is currently undergoing a multi-million-pound restoration programme. As well as the now-complete Special
Exhibitions Gallery, the much-loved Power Hall is being renovated, and improvement works are currently being made to
the historic 1830s Station and Warehouse, the world’s first passenger railway station and the oldest existing railway goods
warehouse respectively.
