8 A 58-year-old businesswoman is undertaking the Great North Run to raise funds for a charity that supports families grieving the loss of a child, stillbirth and miscarriage. Debbie Beardsmore, owner of Debbie’s Tan & Nail Salon on Ormskirk Road in Pemberton, was inspired to enter the Great North Run to raise funds for the 4Louis charity after the loss of her grand-daughter Scarlett Dawber, who was stillborn just before Christmas. Debbie explained how she and the rest of the family felt helpless to support her daughter Fran and husband Aaron through the traumatic later stages of Fran’s pregnancy and the period following Scarlett’s birth. “The twelve-week scan came back fine; it was only later that the bloodwork showed up some abnormalities and it was clear that Scarlett wasn’t going to survive”. Debbie was informed in June that she had a place in the September half-marathon and has spent every spare minute since then building her fitness levels. The 4louis charity provides useful tools, equipment and training to hospital units, hospices and other professionals who have the job of comforting grieving families who suffer a miscarriage, stillbirth or child death. Debbie described how overwhelmed she has been with the response from her customers and other visitors to her salon. “I’ve felt humbled and honoured by the response, one lady brought in an album consisting of the keepsakes from her stillborn granddaughter and we’ve had lots of donations from customers”. Debbie’s other daughter Sarah, who runs The Sanctuary beauty salon, which is based within Debbie’s business, has organised a grand raffle for 4louis and is supporting her mum’s fitness drive by joining Ladybird Gym where her mum is preparing for the run.
