Welcome back! With three issues to

go before the Christmas break, we

are looking forward to bringing you

the usual great selection of local

as well as news and info about

everything taking place locally.

It’s so encouraging that the churches are

resuming their services and that local clubs

and societies are holding their weekly and

monthly meetings including the Norden

WI, the Norden and District Local History

and Antiques Society. Information about

their future meetings can be found on the

Norden and Bamford Noticeboard

on pages 66 to 68.

Please take a look at page 63 which

highlights how to submit any objections

you might have towards the ‘Places for

Everyone/GMSF’, the deadline of which

is 3rd October. The Save the Bamford

Greenbelt Group have provided a list of

the combined objections on their website

as well as an easy-to-follow guide for those

who want to submit their own personal

objections as these need to be raised in

a particular format for them to count.

There will also be a survey monkey for

residents to submit their name and address

if they agree with the combined objection.

recruit additional drivers to join our

busy premium car buying team in

Rochdale in either a part-time or

full-time Logistics Driver role.

Applicants must be well presented

and customer focused. They must

have a clean driving licence, be

over 25 years of age for insurance

purposes and be able to plan

routes and journeys using their own

initiative. The role involves travelling

anywhere in the UK mainland to

collect premium vehicles that our

active team of buyers purchase on

a daily basis.

We are a very busy organisation

and as such we have a number

of positions available with some

flexibility on days worked as long as

they are agreed at the outset.

As such, this could be one day a

week or up to five days a week,

Monday to Friday, excluding

weekends and bank holidays. Full

appraisal training will be given.

National Insurance (N.I.)

contribution - the 2nd biggest tax

paid by those working, is a social

tax, receipts pay for Pensions

and benefits available to individuals in the community.

Government is expected to announce an increase of

1.25% to N.I. and Dividend Tax April 2022, to cover the

cost of social care reform, providing better care in the

community, seen as critical to reducing the impact on

acute care in the NHS.

N.I. payments are taken from employees’ earnings,

self-employed people’s profits and paid by employers.

They are not paid by those in retirement.

One way to offset your NI contributions is to pay

into a Pension plan and receive tax relief of 20%

minimum on the premium, additionally, salary

sacrifice can reduce your earnings by the Pension

premium, reducing the amount of NI you pay.

In many cases your employer will give up the N.I.

saving they make and pay that into your Pension

plan, further boosting the contribution to your plan.

This makes zero difference to the employer – don’t

Norden welcomes the RHS,

North West In Bloom Judges

for its first standalone entry

North West In Bloom judges were welcomed to Norden on Tuesday 10th August,

which for the very first time had been entered into the Royal Horticultural

Society’s competition as standalone entry.

The village had initially been entered into the large village category but had been

put forward under the ‘town’ classification. Due to its population, Norden is classed

as a town under the RHS national guidelines.

The judges’ Norden in Bloom route began over the hills of Owd Betts to learn more

about the local history, before culminating at Nutters Restaurant, where judges were

served a special In Bloom-grown salad by chef Andrew Nutter, who is the Norden in

Bloom group’s ambassador.

Thirteen sites were visited throughout the day: Owd Betts, Ashworth Valley, St

James’ Chapel, a private garden, Taylor Park, Norden Rockery, the Norden War

Memorial, the village, Norden Bowling Club, Moss Row Community Allotments, Moss

Row Woodland, the award-winning Norden Jubilee Park and Nutter’s Restaurant.

Judges were treated to a wonderous wildflower display at the bowling green,

beautiful large planters at Taylor Park, lovingly tended grounds at St James’ and the

colourful Norden Rockery, sponsored by Amber Pets.

The private garden chosen to represent Norden in

Bloom covers a third of an acre, boasting mature trees,

lawned areas, flower beds, a water feature, plus a

paved patio area with scores of plants and flowers.

The Moss Row allotments have benefited from a

wildlife area and pond, which include a bug house,

floral beds for essential pollinators like bees and

butterflies, as well as overhead bat boxes.

A hedge of indigenous whips have been

planted around the perimeter to replace

the fencing over time.

A community orchard has been planted

adjacent to the allotments at Moss Row

Woodland, with the help from Whittaker

Moss Primary School pupils. The school

has won seven Green Flag awards for its

work in supporting the environment.

Norden’s Jubilee Park is already an award-winning green space, being bestowed a

gold medal for the RHS Park Award twice in a row as well as a national distinction

award at the 2019 North West Britain in Bloom awards.

Contributing to this year’s In Bloom efforts, the Norden Environmental and Economic

Village Association (NEEVA) became the first community group to adopt the

council’s saddle planters in Norden, which will be looked after by volunteers until

the end of 2021.

Other projects discussed on judging day included the annual Keep Britain Tidy

Great British Spring Clean – when approximately 50 volunteers cleared 100 bags

of rubbish from across Norden village, Greenbooth, Ashworth, Birtle, Rooley Moor

and Caldershaw – as well as the problem of fly tipping in Ashworth Valley and the

installation of five CCTV cameras throughout the valley to help curb it, plus the trees

planted during lockdown.

“Volunteers have worked so hard to make Norden a welcoming place, so it’s

wonderful to finally showcase our lovely village and all it has to offer.

“We’re very proud of our first Norden in Bloom entry and are confident we’ve

Rochdale in Bloom shows its roots in

the community on regional judging day

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) North West in Bloom competition was welcomed

back to Rochdale this week, in what will amount to a total of five days of judging.

On Thursday 5th August, RHS judges Bernard Pendleton and Maxine Lord toured the town to examine the

visual presentation and efforts of the local Rochdale in Bloom group.

Going for gold again this year, Rochdale was judged to be the best ‘small city’ and winner of the overall

North West in Bloom trophy in 2019, winning gold for the fourth year in a row.

For the regional competition, entries and features across the town are judged individually, unlike the

national competition, Britain in Bloom, where the route is a ‘snapshot’ of the whole town.

This year, the regional route took the judges on a journey around 20 local ‘in bloom’ projects and impressive

horticultural displays, beginning at Nutters Restaurant in Norden and finishing in Rochdale town centre.

Welcoming their guests, Rochdale in Bloom members, accompanied by local councillors, invited the RHS

judges for a warm breakfast at Nutters before heading to Norden Jubilee Park.

Managed by volunteers from the Friends of Norden Jubilee Park, judges were shown the 16 self-watering

hanging baskets, the wishing tree in memory of Councillor Ann Metcalfe and the general upkeep of the

park. For the fourth year running, Jubilee Park will be judged for a RHS Park Award.

The next stop was a new It’s Your Neighbourhood entry this year: Caldershaw Green. A haven for bees,

insects and birds, this entry boasted three wildflower areas, a new swale, willow fencing created by a local

family, and approximately 30 fruit trees that were planted in spring.

After months of keeping Rochdale in full floral colour, members from the volunteer-led community group

then proceeded to show the judges around the colourful sights at Edenfield Road Alleygate, Rochdale

AFC’s Wonderwall, Castleton Railway Station, Castleton War Memorial, Zen Internet, Springhill Hospice,

and the Growth Project, which aims to support mental health through gardening.

In its permanent location at Rochdale Memorial Gardens, Rochdale in Bloom’s

striking World War I pop-up memorial garden finished the town centre route.

Paul Ellison, vice chair of Rochdale in Bloom said,

“It would be fantastic to retain gold. The In Bloom

contest is something to look forward to and enjoyed

by so many volunteers and members of the public.

“A very special thank you goes to our partners,

H Bell & Sons, Richard Hagan, Angela Collinge

and Andrew Nutter.

“Thanks must also go to Rochdale Borough

Council for helping out our community group. Their

Environmental Management team do so much in the

town centre and on the route. They keep everything

looking so wonderfully tidy and inviting with the

planters and their displays.”

We are rapidly approaching the deadline to submit responses

to Places for Everyone/GMSF on 3rd October.

Save Bamford Greenbelt have ploughed through what feels like 1001 documents of the proposal to

come up with a series of objections and easy guide of points to help those that want to submit against

the plan.

plan is “sound”. Soundness is a technical planning term that in lay

• Are the proposals supported by evidence?

• Can the proposal be achieved?

• Can the proposals be achieved in the timescale required?

• Will the proposals avoid damage to the environment and climate,

and allow the quality of life for future generations

to be maintained?

Denehurst Park Dog Show!

This show came about after Richard

(R Smith Photography), and I were

chatting one evening. We’d had such

a great time running the dog section

at Bury Show in June and so decided

that we’d like to organise something

a little more local before the end of

the summer.

The following morning, I called Carisse

Poole from Merry Mutts Doggy Day

Care who then contacted Lois Barton

from Friends of Denehurst Park and we

organised the show together.

As Friends of Denehurst Park are currently

fundraising for a Zip Wire for the older

children to use in the park, we set a target

of £1000 and agreed that if we reached our

target, any monies over and above would

be spent on pet foods and accessories for

Rochdale Food Bank.

Luckily for us, Lois is good friends with Lisa

Stansfield’s sister Suzy Walton who runs

Happy Dogs dog walking service with her

partner Gary Caldeira. She asked Lisa

to come and judge some of our classes.

We also asked Jess Fallows, a local Pet

Behaviourist, to come and judge.

We decided on a schedule and contacted

local businesses to sponsor our classes. In

return for a sponsorship fee, we had their

business name printed on the rosette tails

for their class. We set up a Facebook group

to promote the dog show and to give our

sponsors some additional exposure. We

also gave them the opportunity to offer a

prize to the winner of their class, most of

them did and other classes were offered

prizes from local businesses who had

missed out on sponsoring classes.

Amber Pets provided goody bags for every

dog, so that nobody went home empty

handed.

In order to reduce queues and alleviate

our workload on the day, we took

advanced bookings via a booking form

and the show was almost a complete

sell out! This also satisfied any Covid-19

Track and Trace responsibilities by having

every competitor’s details on file.

Typically, In the days running up to the

show, the weather forecast didn’t look

good with an 80% chance of rain, but we

were confident it would be a great day

nonetheless. The weather certainly didn’t

disappoint, and we were even blessed with

glorious sunshine!

We had a fantastic day and have received

some excellent feedback from competitors,

spectators, and residents. We had so

much help in the run up from friends and

an army of voluntary stewards who were

amazing. We couldn’t have done it without

everybody’s help.

Plans are already afoot for next year’s show.

Our inaugural event was a roaring success

and monies collected so far are well in

excess of our target!

However, to make the show run more

smoothly next year, we need a bigger team

of stewards to help on the day so anybody

wishing to join us should contact us by

calling into Amber Pets or via our Facebook

group, Denehurst Park Dog Show.

WE ARE BACK HIP HIP HOORAY!

On 2nd September we held our first

face-to-face indoor meeting since March

2020 which was held at our new venue

St. Paul’s Church Hall, Blackpitts Road,

Norden.

This was very much a social evening with

lots of chat, laughter and a few games

thrown in. Everyone was so happy to be

finally back together again as a group

with many familiar faces as well as 12

potential new members.

During the past 18 months we have kept

in touch with our members and residents

through monthly newsletters as well as

regular updates in Streetwise.

Our next get together will take place on

Thursday 7th October and will consist

of tea at The Baum followed by The

Rochdale Ghost Walk.

We are a community church and we have been

saddened that so many activities provided by

us have had to stop, however provision for the

On 31st August, ten of our young people worked

hard and under Addie’s direction produced

a drama which was recorded and will be on

YouTube sometime in October.

With the falling of leaves, we are heading into

the next season. As the trees shed their leaves

many of us are hopeful of putting behind us the

difficulties we have faced due to covid restrictions.

Some of us may be hopeful of shedding a pound

or two we gathered during covid. Autumn is a

much-underrated season. It is a time of bright burning

coppers, deep ambers, and rich golden yellows. It is a time for letting go and clearing back the

busyness of the summer, of life.

If you were to clear back or shed some of the unnecessary things in your life, where would you

begin? What would you let fall to the floor?

The Christian life is about seeking the fullness of life in Jesus. Today when we think of the

‘fullness’ of life we think of full bank accounts and full bellies, but this isn’t what Jesus had

in mind. There is a richness inherent in life and this richness comes into its own when it is in

relationship with God. It is an abundant relationship which pours out its love into all corners of

our lives, soon we find we want and will the best for our family, friends, neighbours and even

strangers. This abundant love also spills into our relationship with creation, helping us to learn

to live within creation with a greater enjoyment and sympathy for the world around us.

But, as with any relationship that is of worth it means we must let go of some things to gain the

deeper and lasting riches. If you’d like to know more or have any questions about this, pop

Local author publishes his first book

My name is Michael Walsh-Rose, and I am a twenty-fouryear-old

from Norden who has just published my first book,

The Island of Palm Trees, which is now available as both

an eBook and a paperback on Amazon. I started writing

stories and scripts during my teenage years and went on to

specialise in screenwriting at the Northern Film School.

Just before the pandemic, I started writing the first chapter

of The Island of Palm Trees, my first novel. When lockdown

began, I found myself with lots of spare time and so I

decided to dive headfirst into the book. I was grateful for

the distraction from everything that was going on in the

world at the time, and because I had so much time,

I managed to get a first draft of the novel done much

quicker than expected.

Reading the positive reviews that have been written

about my book so far has been hugely encouraging and

a great reward for my hard work. I’m currently working

on my second novel, Night Shift, and recently started

throwing some ideas around for a sequel to The Island of Palm Trees.

What’s the price of inspiration? Tom Jennings is about to find out.

With dreams of writing his first novel, Tom travels to the Scarlett Grove Hotel in Roquetas

GARDENING TIPS AND ADVICE

FOR OCTOBER

1. Early Autumn is the perfect time to move trees and shrubs whilst they approach dormancy

and the soil is still warm.

2. Lift and divide clumps of crowded herbaceous perennials. This helps to rejuvenate the plant,

providing more flowers and a better shape for next year.

3. Plant Spring bulbs either in the border as a space filler (Allium’s & Daffodils), in the lawn for

a splash of colour (Snakes Head Fritilleries, Crocus’s or Dwarf Daffodils) or in containers for

a beautiful patio display (Tulip’s).

4. Sow hardy annual seeds in the ground where they are to grow for an earlier

display next Summer. Try Nigella Damascena (Love-in-a-mist) or

Centaurea Cyanus (Cornflower).

5. It’s not too late to have a go at growing some vegetables. Garlic cloves

can planted now as can broad beans in the soil where they are to grow.

These will be ready to harvest from as early as May next year.

6. October is still a good month to lay turf onto prepared, raked ground. Or

to improve your existing lawn, rake up any moss and thatch build up and

improve lawn drainage with a hollow tined aerator.

INGREDIENTS

g ork fillet or loin chos

Salt and pepper

45g butter

2 tablespoons Calvados

360ml cider

120ml chicken stock

3 medium tart sweet apples, peeled

cored and cut into eighths

2 shallots

180g mushrooms, sliced

tbss lain our

120ml crème fraiche or double cream

METHOD

1. Season the meat with salt and pepper. Cut into 6cm lengths.

2. Preheat the oven to 180C/gas 4

3. Melt one third of the butter in a heavy casserole or large frying pan.

Fry the meat until golden brown all over. Add the Calvados, cider, and stock,

bring to the boil and add the apple slices, cover and transfer to the oven.

4. Cook for 20 minutes or until the meat is cooked through.

5. Transfer the meat to a large serving plate and cover with foil. Keep warm.

6. Use the cooking liquid to make a sauce. – melt the remaining butter in a pan

and add the mushrooms and shallots cook for minutes. tir in the our

and cook for a further 2 minutes. Add the cooking liquid a little at a time

and cook for 5 minutes. Finally stir in the crème fraiche or cream and

adjust the seasoning.

7. Pour the sauce over the meat and serve with new potatoes or boiled rice

and vegetables.

Norden Councillors Update

Your Ward Councillors are here all year round to offer help and advice on a wide range of local issues

Whilst most Council meetings stop over the summer our work in the ward

continues and the past few weeks have been a particularly busy time for us.

We have been working with residents to protect trees which were planned to be

cut down near the near the Bridge Inn (nothing to do with the pub). Residents

who contacted us were extremely pleased to see them left in place.

We have had quite a few calls about fly tipping and bin issues, As soon as we

know about problems like these we can ensure that officers from our

Environmental Management team are assigned to clear any mess and look for

evidence of the culprits so please do let us know if you spot anything.

We are pleased to report that United Utilities have been making necessary

repairs to drainage on Elbut Lane in Birtle. This is something that lots of

residents have spoken to us about so it’s good to see this issue being resolved.

The new speed notification signs are ready to be installed on Edenfield Road.

Those with sharp-eyed may have spotted location markings at either end of the

village. We are also extremely pleased to have secured additional funding for a

further driver feedback sign for Elmsfield Avenue. Again this is an are that has

been highlighted to us by residents and we hope that this will help to prevent

the majority of drivers going too fast. We also had a very successful police

operation in the village last month to target fast and dangerous drivers.

Great news too that the car park at Cutgate precinct will be staying under

council control and free for public use. Although not in Norden we opposed

changes that would have made it less accessible because we know how many

of our residents use the car park when visiting shops, church or the doctors.

Your Ward Councillors are here all year round to offer help and advice on a wide range of local issues

It would be remiss of us not start this update without the laces for Everyone

document, and the continued desire the Council is showing to concrete over

the Greenbelt in Bamford. We voted against this plan when it came before

Council in uly and will continue to do so, particularly where the unnecessary

Greenbelt development remains within it.

It’s been nice recently to return to some form of normality and we are hopeful

that this will continue into the winter months. We are starting to consider how

we can make the festive season one to remember. ne of the ways we are

doing this is by allocating funding to install Christmas lights outside the shops

at ulder ill. We can’t wait to see them lit up We have also allocated funding

to community groups at Mayfair Gardens and the ementia caf.

and we regularly walk the ward, meeting residents and council officers to see

where we can help. We’re also delighted to see the cout’s new nearing

completion and we are sure this new building will be a great addition to the

ward.

From The Archives

ROCHDALE AND THE ORIGINAL CRICKET BALL

Rochdale is certainly the town where

the Co-operative Movement began.

It was also controversially at one time

seen as having the widest bridge in

the United Kingdom and it certainly

was the birthplace of some of our

great entertainers such as Gracie

Fields and Norman Evans. But the

town also finds its place in the history

of cricket as the place where the

cricket ball, as we know it now,

was invented.

Hamlet

Nicholson

was born on

Blackwater

Street in 1810.

A cobbler by

trade he began

his professional

life at eight

years of age

as an apprentice to his father Wilson

Nicholson, who had escaped forced

military duty by running away from

his home town of Sunderland and

eventually ending up in Rochdale where

he married Sarah Law from Healey

Stones in 1797.

Their son Hamlet was one of eight

children born next door to the George

and Dragon Hotel on Blackwater Street

and baptised at Rochdale Parish Church.

Following his apprenticeship, Hamlet

worked as a cobbler on Drake Street

and became known for his repair work

with ‘gutta percha’ rubber which had

uses in electrical insulation as well as,

interestingly, the core of golf balls. At

that time trade was not great in Rochdale

and for a short period Hamlet Nicholson

moved to London to seek his fortune,

returning soon without it but with an

idea which would revolutionise sport.

On a domestic note, Hamlet married Ann

who was four days his junior having

known her from childhood, brought

up as they were near to each other on

Blackwater Street. The pair eventually

had a family of five : Ellen, who died in

infancy, Maria, Edwin, Henry and Alice,

and two grand-daughters, Alice and

Annie.

Cricket as a game was thought to have

originated in south-east England and

became popular as early as the 18th

century. Before Nicholson’s invention,

the centre of the cricket ball was solid

but Nicholson changed that by using

pieces of cork (hence it was often

known as the ‘corky ball) bound tight

with worsted thread and hammered

into shape in order to harden it. After

that, a leatherised rubber cover was

fitted. Hamlet Nicholson had been

determined to improve on existing

designs and in his autobiography of

1892 he wrote how he had promised his

wife he would never rest until he had

completed his study of the compound

cricket ball and so persevered with the

idea until he perfected the ball design

with outer sections made by cutting

four pieces of hard leather shapes like a

quartered orange peel and binding them

all together with a seam of six rows of

glued stitching. He was assisted in the

development and manufacture of the ball

by his two sons Edwin and Harry who

were also cobblers, the process being

similar to that of shoemaking. The cork

inner and the rubber/leather outer gave

the ball a great deal of spring, the raised

seam an added attribute whereby the

bowler could vary the bounce on the turf

and the swerve through the air.

Nicholson patented the cricket ball in 1860

following which it was popular enough

to sell throughout the cricketing world

but not without Nicholson publicising

the characteristics of the ball widely. For

example, he placed an advertisement in

the Rochdale Observer on 18th May 1861

claiming that his ball was cheap, durable,

a true sphere and never varied in weight

as it didn’t absorb moisture as other balls

tended to do. It was easy to handle for the

bowler and was less likely to do damage

to cricket bats.

Hamlet presented the ball at the 1862

Paris Exhibition where he won a prize

for his innovative design. So successful

was Nicholson in selling the cricket ball

around the world that he was able to

afford to build five houses on a plot of

land on which he used to play as a boy

at the boundary of Broadfield Park. The

family lived in one of the houses and

there, in Kilnerdeyne Terrace, his wife

Ann died in 1890. Hamlet himself was

to live for a further nine years dying at

the age of 89. His gravestone can still be

seen in the cemetery at St Chad’s where

he lies with other members of his family.

The tombstone stands 10 yards away

from that of Tim Bobbin.

Hamlet Nicholson wrote that ‘I have

cause to be thankful that the idea of

the compound cricket ball became

so implanted in my mind that I was

enabled to bring it to a practical issue,

and that no one has been able to make

one to compete with it, for it is to these

circumstances that I owe the secure

competency for my declining years.’

Cricket has much to be thankful to

Rochdale for and to Hamlet Nicholson

as the essential make-up of the ball,

developed by this cobbler from the town,

is still in worldwide use today.

Recommencement

of face-to-face

Area Forums

Now that life is returning to a more

normal pattern, many will have been

hoping that this would include the

reopening of Area Forums.

The Council’s Township and Communities

Manager has recently provided an update on

this issue.

The advice of the Infection Control Team (IC)

at the Council is that it is not yet appropriate

to hold Forums . There are concerns about a

possible spike in the infection rate coinciding

with the return of schools and colleges .

The advice of the IC team is driven by the

assessment of the science and the potential

risk to Officers and Forum attendees and

in particular the senior members of our

community. It would not be a desirable outcome

for someone to become unwell as a result of

attending a Forum. The situation will be reviewed

at the end of September with a view to resuming

Forums in November.

This is not an ideal situation as Villagers have

been deprived of the opportunity to express

their views on several issues within a formal

setting for more than 18 months. I have asked

the Township Manager to consider using virtual

means to run Forums in the interim.

For instance, there are several planning and

infrastructure issues, including Places for

Everyone (GMSF 3,) which I am concerned that

local residents should be given an opportunity

to express their view on . Go to www.gmconsult.

org to find the current round of consultation on

the subject.

In the meantime, Officers in the Township Office

are still offering the same excellent service to

our community as they did pre-pandemic and

are contactable via the Council switchboard.

Our Local Councillors will shortly be resuming

their own surgeries and are available to assist

on many local issues or concerns.

The property market is currently facing its

biggest shortage in new listings for six years

... with family homes becoming increasingly

difficult to come by.

LISTINGS 26% LOWER THAN LAST YEAR

Property portal Zoopla has reported that the property market is

facing the worst shortage in fresh listings since 2015.

While buyer demand remains strong, stock levels are down

more than 26% compared to last year’s average, which has

left prospective buyers battling it out for the most in-demand

And these supply issues are hitting homes priced up to £350,000
