the Reverend of St James’ Milnrow and

St Thomas’ Newhey so keep an eye out

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, Milnrow held

the Milnrow Calling festival, with over a thousand

locals turning up to enjoy the live music, food

and drink stalls and tribute acts. Thanks to Andy

Kelly for providing a great write up of this event

and Alpha Photography for the fabulous photos.

At 86, Milnrow resident, Gordon Aaron, is truly

inspirational and a local legend and on page 48

he writes about his involvement in the Milnrow

Library Walking Group whose walks feature in

charity walks and marathon runs, he is proof

that it’s never too late to improve your mind and

body! He even managed to squeeze in some

My name is Michael Walsh-Rose, and I am a

twenty-four-year-old from Norden who has

just published my first book, The Island of

Palm Trees, which is now available as both

an eBook and a paperback on Amazon.

I started writing stories and scripts during my

teenage years and went on to specialise in

screenwriting at the Northern Film School.

Just before the pandemic, I started writing the first

chapter of The Island of Palm Trees, my first novel.

Milnrow Calling marks a

More than 1000 turn out for Milnrow music event

August Bank Holiday 2021 will go down by many as the weekend they went back ‘out-out’ in

our village as the first Milnrow Calling festival took place. Over a thousand party goers were

treated to a variety of acts for all the family. I was honoured to be invited to act as the MC for

the day and got to introduce some great acts on two stages on the cricket ground.

Opening the proceedings were Milnrow Community Choir who are always looking for new

members and rehearse at 7.30pm every Monday evening at the Cricket Club, and they were

followed by the highly energetic Loud Elite Competition Team Dancers. Both performances

certainly set the scene for what was to come later in the afternoon and evening. Involving

these two community groups in this way was a wonderful way of giving the participants the

opportunity to show off their considerable talents and gain experience and it also encouraged

their families and the rest of the audience to stay all day!

It’s more usual to see Ellie Sax playing to crowds of partygoers on the beach at sunset

than during the afternoon in a Greater Manchester cricket club! Fortunately, the organisers

managed to secure Ellie and her high tempo sax solos over a DJ backing really got the crowd

going early doors.

There were two local bands performing at the festival, a Celtic Rock band called

The Scattering (check out that bass player!) and 80s covers band New Identity. Both are five

piece set ups and are made up of local lads, but their styles couldn’t be more different.

The Scattering play Irish, folk, and country songs usually with a straight 4 beat and high

tempo, decorated with accordion and fiddle solos on top of vocal harmonies. New Identity are

an extremely tight electric rock pop band with punching synth parts and vocal work and the

80s pop classics allow both the guitar and bass shine with some familiar lines and riffs. It was

brilliant to see local bands celebrated locally.

There was a real family feeling to the day with food stalls, face painting, ice creams

and sweets and there was also a generous helping of cuteness in

the shape of the Disney Duo from Merseyside who treated a young

audience to a medley of classics from “The Mouse.”

Tribute acts are not everyone’s cup of tea, but they are the staple of

small festivals like this, and they certainly work in bringing people

together. Stepping in to cover for a poorly Robbie Williams (tribute)

were the brilliant Runaway Killers, followed by The Courtbetweeners,

who are I’m reliably informed are the only Courteeners tribute act in

the country.

As the sun set, the whole event drew towards the main stage where

Freddie and the Queen experience were the perfect crowning act

to an extremely successful event.

Next year’s Milnrow Calling will take place on Sunday

Update from

St Thomas’, Newhey

and St James’, Milnrow

One of the lovely things about being a vicar is that

there is a rhythm to life in the church which has been

the same for centuries. We celebrate our Harvest

festival at the end of September and then look towards

the season of Remembrance.

In the shops now though, everything seems to be

looking forward to Halloween with witches and ghosts

and pumpkins and all things scary! Now I know what

you’re thinking… ‘Halloween isn’t a Christian thing,

she’s going to be a killjoy and tell us it’s demonic or

something. Either that or she’s going to try and claim it

but take all the fun out of it.’

The word Halloween comes from ‘All Hallows Eve,’ the day

before the feast of All Hallows, which we now call All Saints

Day. It is a time of year when Christians remember those people

who have been faithful to their beliefs, often to the point of being

killed for them. All Saints Day is followed by All Souls Day when we

remember those, we love who have died.

So why is Halloween connected with so much scary stuff?

Some people believe it is due to an old belief that witches

could not cast spells between All Hallows and Christmas

so they would try and get all their wickedness done the

night before. Others think it comes from the pre-Christian

Celtic festival of Samhain when the space between this world

and the spirit world was thought to be at its thinnest. Perhaps it’s

just because, as the nights draw in and the cold weather comes,

people feel more vulnerable and have chosen to gather together

and try to scare their fears away.

Whatever the reason, Halloween has caught the popular imagination

to such an extent that it is now a commercial festival. We don’t celebrate

Halloween in our churches, we prefer to celebrate the Christian heroes and ordinary

loved ones whose days come straight after it, you are very welcome to join us at

Newhey Parish Church of St Thomas or at Milnrow Parish Church of St James

the Apostle.

Whatever you do this season, please be careful, think about those who live

alone and do not want to join in the fright fest. Watch over your children and

don’t encourage them to accept treats from strangers. After the year and a

half we’ve had let’s try to look out for everybody in our community.

Spiced Blackberry Chutney

A great one for the fantastic crop of brambles in the hedgerows this year.

Great with cheeses and cold meats.

INGREDIENTS

2 red onions

Approx. 500g blackberries

About 4 apples

3cm raw ginger (grated)

1 tsp chilli flakes (or a chopped fresh chilli)

½ tsp mustard seeds

170g soft brown sugar

180ml red wine or cider vinegar

WI UPDATE:

METHOD

Bubble all ingredients up in a heavy

bottomed pan for about 50 minutes or until

a thicker, more chutney like consistency is

achieved. Put into sterilised jars and try to

leave for a couple

of months for the

flavours to mature.

- door fee of £3.50. It is likely that we will still be in our temporary venue of Littleborough Cricket Club,

but this will be confirmed nearer the time via our FB page.

Recommencement

of face-to-face

Area Forums

Now that life is returning to a more

normal pattern, many will have been

hoping that this would include the

reopening of Area Forums.

The Council’s Township and Communities

Manager has recently provided an update on

this issue.

The advice of the Infection Control Team (IC)

at the Council is that it is not yet appropriate

to hold Forums . There are concerns about a

possible spike in the infection rate coinciding

with the return of schools and colleges .

The advice of the IC team is driven by the

assessment of the science and the potential

risk to Officers and Forum attendees and

in particular the senior members of our

community. It would not be a desirable outcome

for someone to become unwell as a result of

attending a Forum.

The situation will be reviewed at the end of

September with a view to resuming Forums in

November.

This is not an ideal situation as Villagers have

been deprived of the opportunity to express

their views on several issues within a formal

setting for more than 18 months. I have asked

the Township Manager to consider using virtual

means to run Forums in the interim.

For instance, there are several planning and

infrastructure issues, including Places for

Everyone (GMSF 3,) which I am concerned that

local residents should be given an opportunity

to express their view on. Go to www.gmconsult.

org to find the current round of consultation on

the subject.

In the meantime, Officers in the Township Office

are still offering the same excellent service to

our community as they did pre-pandemic and

are contactable via the Council switchboard.

Our Local Councillors will shortly be resuming

their own surgeries and are available to assist

on many local issues or concerns.

Milnrow Library Walking Group

A walk from Milnrow Memorial

Park to Piethorne Nature

Reserve via Rough Bank.

Some of our Group did this walk recently. It is a

distance of 4 1/2 miles, with some gradual inclines

and stretches of rough stone pathways. Good

walking shoes or boots are recommended. OS sheet

SD 91 covers the walk area.

The Route

Leave Milnrow Memorial Park by the main gates, turn

right pass under the motorway bridge, and proceed

down Royds Street into Butterworth Hall.

Go past Newfield Head House until the lane becomes

a single track path which levels off to reveal a

magnificent panoramic view of the Rochdale and

Milnrow landscape stretching from Scout Moor, Brown

Wardle, Middle Hill and Hades Hill. The M62 motorway,

busy with traffic, extends on your left up to Winter Hill.

Continue along until his path divides, take the right

hand path over stone setts, again slippy when wet.

The path then widens and brings you to the steel

gated entrance of Rough Farm.

Turn right past the popular Waggon Inn (circa 1782)

and follow the Butterworth Hall Brook all the way up

Water Lane.

Proceed through the farm yard, then up the lane,

past cottages on the right and converted residences

Rough Bank Barn and white painted Higher Rough

Bank Farm on the left. However give special

attention to Rough Bank Farmhouse on the right.

On reaching Moy Hill take the underpass under the

M62 motorway, where you can observe an impressive

display of wall art. Continue up Newfield Head Lane,

the stone sett surfaces can be very slippy when wet,

so take great care.

This is dated 1607, it is a grade II listed building of

more than special interest. It is the oldest house, still

occupied, in the region, and was built only four years

after the death of Queen Elizabeth 1st (d.1603)

when King James 1st had come to the throne!

Descend the tarmac lane, round the hairpin bend,

then first left over the stone sett and cobble path, in

the direction of Ogden Reservoir.

Ascend the field path up to the top where there is a

capped mineshaft, and a stile onto the wide bridleway.

Go left, down this rough stone lane, but take care as

the surface has exposed bed rock followed by stone

setts which are very slippy when wet.

At the end of the wire fence take the stile left and

go up the narrow path with the shale mine working

spoil to the left, and the Piethorne Nature Reserve to

the right.

Follow this path between the field wall and Nature

Reserve, though in places, the path is littered with

loose stones and a fallen tree, until emerging at a

stile, with way marker sign, into an open field.

After passing Ashfield Farm, right, and Tunshill House,

left, proceed down Tunshill Lane, over the M62

Motorway Bridge and onto Kiln Lane. Return to the

Memorial Park via Pennine Drive, Butterworth Hall

and Royds Street.

Following a relaxation of the Covid 19

restrictions we are now able to return to our

base at Milnrow Library. We meet every

Monday morning from 9.30 am leaving out at

10am prompt. If you feel you want to get out

more for a walk in the local countryside, then

come along and join us. We have different

walks designed for people of all abilities and

ages, who wish to gain the health benefits ,

both physical and mental, from walking in a

safe and social group. The walks are free and

friendly and lead by volunteer walk leaders.

has now been released for public

consultation which will be for 8 weeks.

You can access it via the Internet on :

If you wish to submit responses to any of the

sites in the Plan then you need to act quickly as

the deadline date is the 3rd October 2021.

The next stages in the process are aimed at

Public Examination by a panel of Planning

Inspectors who will assess whether the plan is

Soundness is a technical planning term that in

lay terms means:

• Is the strategy appropriate for Greater

Manchester and your locality?

• Have all alternatives been taken into

account?

• Are the proposals supported by evidence?

• Can the proposal be achieved?

• Can the proposal be achieved in the

timescale?

• Will the proposals avoid damage to the

environment and climate and allow the

quality of life for future generations to be

maintained?

ITS NEVER TOO LATE TO IMPROVE

YOUR MIND AND BODY

From January to July this year, I walked up on the tops

over Milnrow and achieved a total of 1000 miles to raise

funds for Veterans in the Community.

This is a very worthwhile organisation which helped me

immensely when I lost my wife last year whilst COVID was at its

peak, which included delivering meals to my door even on Xmas

Day! The task I set myself was my way of saying ‘thank you.’

I walked three to four hours every day but enjoyed the challenge

because I am a regular Walker with the Milnrow Library Walking Group. I recently climbed

Snowdon on my 86th birthday and I was over the moon on successfully reaching the

summit. However, it’s a true saying ‘no pain, no gain’! I am now in training to take part in the

Manchester Half Marathon in October.

Even though I walk a lot on my own, I look forward to every Monday morning at 9.30am when

I meet a great bunch of walkers in Milnrow Park including people like Geoff and Gwyneth who

kindly organise the Walking Group.

Once again please remember that if you look after your body, it will look after you and that

it’s never too late to improve your mind and body.

The property market is currently facing its

biggest shortage in new listings for six years

... with family homes becoming increasingly

difficult to come by.

LISTINGS 26% LOWER THAN LAST YEAR

Property portal Zoopla has reported that the property market is

facing the worst shortage in fresh listings since 2015.

While buyer demand remains strong, stock levels are down

more than 26% compared to last year’s average, which has
