HIS FIRST BOOK

My name is Michael Walsh-Rose, and I am a

twenty-four-year-old from Norden who has

just published my first book, The Island of

Palm Trees, which is now available as both

an eBook and a paperback on Amazon.

I started writing stories and scripts during my

teenage years and went on to specialise in

screenwriting at the Northern Film School.

Just before the pandemic, I started writing the first

chapter of The Island of Palm Trees, my first novel.

When lockdown began, I found myself with lots of

spare time and so I decided to dive headfirst into

the book. I was grateful for the distraction from

everything that was going on in the world at the time,

and because I had so much time,

I managed to get a first draft of the novel done much quicker than expected.

Reading the positive reviews that have been written about my book so far has been hugely

encouraging and a great reward for my hard work. I’m currently working on my second

novel, Night Shift, and recently started throwing some ideas around for a sequel

to The Island of Palm Trees.

UPDATE FROM YOUR LOCAL GROUP

Friends of Syke

and Cronkeyshaw

Busy Summer for Friends Group

The friends have been busy over the last few months and have

held their first face to face meeting since the group was founded.

Activities over the last few weeks included a walk from the junction of Fieldhouse

Road and Dewhirst Road along the common to Whitworth Road. The group then

crossed to continue on the common to heights Lane. The walks are used by the

group to plan future projects.

The group was delighted to be granted funding from Rochdale North Township

for a spiral herb planter which will in place shortly.

We have also received generous donations from John Horne of Dale Event Hire

and Sam Hopley of Wallpaperbase to help with the set-up of the group. Sam has

also promised to donate tools to the group in the future.

Tricia Ayrton, Chair of the Friends, said:

“It was great to meet face to face again at Syke Chapel. We of course had done

several walks over summer but it was nice to meet as a group. We were very

pleased with the funding grant for the spiral herb planer and we are extremely

grateful to both John and Sam for their kind donations.

“On one of our last walks we discussed the possibility of planting a hedgerow

along a section of the steep banking at Iron Waters. This would be inside the

wooden fencing and slightly lower so that it would not spoil the view. The

intention is to create a long-term solution to the problem of dumping on this

hillside. We met with a representative from City of Trees and she said they could

provide hedgerow plants and a plan for the site. We would need to find funding

for protective fencing to be provided and put in place to protect the plants from

grazing animals.”

The group meets monthly. New members are always welcome.

Welcome back to the Councillor

updates, I hope you have been able

to get a few days away all be it in

the form of a ‘Staycation’.

Council meetings that are open to the

public have returned and are being held

in the Riverside Council offices.

All the Healey, Syke and Shawclough

Ward Councillor surgeries are up and

running, please see our monthly adverts

for details. All are confidential and no

appointment is required.

Unfortunately the popular Council Ward Forums have been

postponed but will hopefully resume in November.

However, several projects have now been or are in the process

of being completed, namely; the new notice board in Shawclough

Village, funding for the new Friends group (FOSAC ) for a herb

garden near to Syke Pond, Christmas lights in Shawclough,

requests for 2 defibrillators and a camera to deter fly-tipping

with the majority of the funding being approved by the Township

and Ward Forum.

Syke Walk & Talk Group

NAR END AND HEALEY STONES

This is a short walk of just over 3 miles

with some hills which can easily be

completed in less than 2 hours.

Starting from Syke Chapel head north along

Dewhirst road for about 100 yards and then

turn left along Syke lane.

Go through the gate in front of you onto a

footpath. Take care in wet weather this section

of the path can be very muddy. Continue west

through the fields keeping the trees to your

right. The path rises slightly and at the crest of

the hill you will see a gate leading onto Road

lane in front of you. Go through the gate and

continue along Road lane passing through

another gate to the end of the lane.

A turn to the left would take you on to

Whitworth road but bear right along Toad

Leach lane. After passing a row of new

houses the lane turns right and climbs steeply

until you reach Nar End. Continue through

Nar End passing the stone set into the wall

on your right which marks the location of

Healey Stones Wesleyan Methodist Sunday

School built in 1822. A short distance beyond

this Toad Leach lane ends. Turn left along a

trackway which leads through the valley at

Healey Stones. A large stone on your left is

inscribed with “If you don’t know where you’re

going any road will take you there”. There a

several more in the inscriptions on the rock

faces in the John Hudson garden which you

pass through later in the walk. Continue along

the track until you see a footpath to the right.

Take this path which rises steeply before

turning left and levelling out. At a junction with

the next path take the left fork. At the next

junction turn right up the hill to reach two

large ponds.

The ponds are flooded quarry pits and are very

picturesque particularly in late summer when

the heather is in flower. Continue to follow the

path to the junction with a trackway.

Follow the path which passes through the

John Hudson memorial garden. On the further

side you turn left descending a flight of steps

by the side of the disused Hamer Pasture

Reservoir. The reservoir leaked and was

expensive to maintain. It was taken out of use

in the 1960’s. Take care when descending

the steps they can be slippery when wet. On

reaching the bottom of the steps turn left

down the hill and cross the stile on to Dewhirst

road where you turn right. From here it is a

short downhill walk back to the starting point

at Syke Chapel.

Turn left here descending with good views

to your right across Healey Dell and the old

railway viaduct.

The trackway brings you to the top of Ending

Rake and by following the trackway to the

left you will retrace your route through Healey

Stones to Nar End. Where the trackway meets

Toad Leach lane a small gate facing you leads

onto a paved pathway which is an old pack

horse route.

Syke Walk and Talk Group was

formed almost 15 years ago.

We offer at least 2 walks each Friday all

year round and attempt to provide suitable

walks for all abilities. The walks are entirely

free. Toilet facilities are normally available at

Syke Chapel who are also able to offer tea/

coffee and biscuits at modest prices after

the walk.

The walks are are free to attend and lead by

trained walk leaders with a good knowledge

of the Syke area.

Walks leave on Friday’s at 10am. Please

arrive around 9.45 for registration. The

meeting point is outside Syke Chapel, Syke

Road OL12 9TF

Our walks utilise public footpaths and roads

around Syke and we walk in all weathers.

It is important to come properly equipped

with boots and suitable clothing.

Syke Chapel has now reopened. Toilet

facilities are available and tea/coffee and

biscuits after the walks.

Covid-19

Whilst restrictions have now been relaxed the

virus still represents a risk. It is advisable to

maintain a safe distance from other walkers.
