The Daytripper Now we’ve landed in OIL SPRINGS, WYOMING, CAMLACHIE & FOREST The Winters of My Childhood SHOP LOCAL By Susan Iedema, London “When one door closes another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.” ~ Alexander Graham Bell When I was a kid, the season of winter meant the arrival of fun, new activities only the cold and snow could bring. The house where I grew up was located across the street from the fairgrounds of our small town. A winter carnival used to be held there complete with snowmobiles races. An indoor skating rink was also made in one of the buildings on the site. I remember the year a couple of my uncles arrived with snowmobiles in tow. The carnival was over, but the groomed racetrack remained. I climbed on the back of one of the snowmobiles with my uncle and off we went around the track. As we entered one of the curves, my uncle tried to gain a position higher on the bank. Meanwhile, on the back, I was afraid to look so closed my eyes. Unfortunately, we weren’t going fast enough for the feat and the snowmobile tumbled down, with the eye opening result of the two of us being deposited on the track below. Fortunately for both of us, we walked away unscathed. The track was also utilized by my siblings and me. Initially, my dad obtained a used Polaris Snow Cruiser. A black and white photograph from the sixties shows him at the helm of the beast with my siblings and I seated behind him. The Polaris was eventually replaced by a lighter, sportier model. You could find my brother, sister and I zooming, if you could call it that, around the racetrack at the fairgrounds. Other times, we’d head over to the indoor skating rink. No fee was required and the door always seemed to be open. One outing I recall, my siblings and I had the facility all to ourselves. At one point I fell, but lay there in jest, only to be jolted back to reality when my sister accidentally skated over my finger! But in the end, no real harm was done. My appendage was still attached and not even a scar ensued. In our own backyard other activities occurred such as snow fort or snowman building or snowball fights. The latter were best if an ambush occurred as it gave the instigator the element of surprise. A large mound of snow by our driveway led my brother to carve out a sort of igloo from it. However, no matter how hard I tried, I could not bring myself to pass through the entrance to get inside! I don’t believe I ever succeeded at doing so. The snowfall events that happened obviously left an impression as evidenced by the snapshots I have of those times. One shows my mother in her brown, faux fur, winter jacket making her way along the sidewalk which was bordered by chest high banks of snow. She kept one eye on the sidewalk behind her when my brother emerged from the house in haste, thus coatless, in an attempt to sneak up behind her. But she was on to him as he had a habit of kidding around. Other pictures show the backyard deep in snow with a sole set of footprints leading to the garage. Probably my dad checking on the rabbits housed inside. Now, other than my winter walks, I am usually a spectator of such events rather than the instigator or a participant.
