I’d like to begin by giving a shout
out to Stan and Clare Champ of Dutton.
There were a few years in this magazine’s
youth when our core staff delivered all
the issues and even picked up payment
as we went along. No wonder we’re
feeling older now! Eventually we began
hiring mostly retired folks with minivans
or trucks (and we’re still hiring) and I
think Stan was the first guy to reply to
an ad we ran. That was 20 years ago and
he’s now retiring. Thank you both for
your hard work and friendship!
Please note that there will be
three copies of Daytripping in
2022 instead of five. The first
one will come out in mid-April.
On November 7, just after this issue
is released, the US border will reopen to
vaccinated Canadian travelers. This is
wonderful news for families and friends
who have been separated and unable to
see each other for the past 20 months.
It will also be healthy for people to
experience the freedom to visit another
country, go to a favourite restaurant,
sports event or concert.
Notice however that no one was
pushing for this more than the politicians
in states that border Canada. Businesses
on the American side have been hurting
badly without the usual influx of Canadians
spending millions, if not billions, of dollars
in border communities in the United
States. I do feel for them but also notice
the lack of excitement from businesses in
border towns in Southwestern Ontario.
The pandemic has been the greatest
challenge most of them have faced, and
the ones that have made it through have
done so because so many people (like
you) chose to shop locally and support
small business. Before the pandemic it
was commonplace for some Canadians
to spend virtually all of their money in
United States, and boast about it. Try to
imagine how many more businesses in
Ontario would have closed if the borders
had been open this entire time. Imagine all
that money (including CERB benefits that
in Southwestern Ontario
kindergarten students will be repaying for
decades) simply flowing south never to
be in our hands again. Shopping locally
saved our economy during this pandemic.
You saved it! Your friends saved it, your
kids saved it and our combined “we will
persevere” attitude saved it. And it felt
really good! In a horrible, bleak time, we
found positive things to embrace and this
“shopping locally thing” was one of them.
The question now is... will we
remember? Or will thousands of
Canadians go right back to spending their
entire paycheques in big box stores in
another country, where that money has
no chance of coming back to our local
farmers, neighbours, friends and family?
I don’t know. Will people spend hours
crossing a border to enter a country where
their money is worth 35% less, to save
five dollars on a turkey that they could’ve
bought from a local farmer? And will they
brag about it? We’re seeing friends and
family at odds with each other over the
vaccine requirements (and it’s put a real
damper on this Brady Bunch love-in thing
we all had going on). Is it fair for me to be
upset with someone for how and where
they spend their money? I don’t know.
I’d be the first person to support
cross-border shopping if it was a two-way
street and Americans came over here as
much as we go over there, but I don’t see
that happening in SW Ontario. They’re
probably thrilled in Northern Ontario
where fishing and hunting camps rely on
droves of American tourists. 25 years ago,
this magazine proudly promoted a portion
of Michigan along with Southwestern
Ontario and encouraged that very thing.
I wish them well too, because this has
hurt everyone. So if you do go to Michigan
or another state, shop locally and support
small business there too. And remember,
shopping at your nearest Gargantuamart
isn’t quite what we mean by shopping
local. They have enough money. Also try
to keep in mind that while Amazon might
have enough money to send Captain Kirk
to space, which is really cool, it still isn’t
going to sponsor your kids hockey team.
Shop early and shop locally please.
Take care of yourself, and others, and
Merry Christmas. Thanks for reading.
