DECEMBER 2, 2021 WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 9 Peabody rolls past Saugus on Thanksgiving FOOTBALL By Sam Minton PEABODY — The Peabody football team cooked up a 41-6 Thanksgiving morning win over the Saugus Sachems at Coley Lee Field, closing out the season with six straight victories after just barely missing the playoffs. The game capped a day of firsts for the Tanners, which officially clinched the Northeastern Conference Lynch Division title. The title is the first for Peabody as a conference member and first of any kind since 2001, when the Tanners won a share of the Greater Boston League. This year marked the first time the Tanners ran the table in the NEC, going undefeated in the Lynch Division, and it was also the first year the Tanners posted a perfect road record since 2004. Despite having some defensive struggles to start the year, Peabody head coach Mark Bettencourt said that the 2021 season was a lot of fun. “Obviously you have fun when you win and being on a six-game winning streak with this win, it puts the icing on the cake for the work that the kids put in,” Bettencourt said. “When we were 1-4, it would have been easy to give up, but that just did not happen. They believed in the system. They believed in their coaches. They believed in each other.” It was a milestone occasion for the Tanners, as junior quarterback Shea Lynch threw five toucdown passes, finishing the season with a team record 31 touchdown passes (against only four interceptions). The Tanners capped the drive with a 44-yard strike from Shea to Daviel Canela. The bad news was sophomore Domenic Scalese missed his first pointafter attempt (PAT) of the season. Scalese (44 PAT, 2 field goals) was perfect the rest of the way, finishing the season tied with Marblehead’s Eli Feingold as the Northeastern Conference’s leading kickers with 50 points each. The Tanners forced a three and out on Saugus’ next possession with just under five minutes left in the opening quarter. Batista returned the ensuing punt 33 yards to give possession on the Sachems’ 16-yard line. Lynch wasted no time, throwing a 16-yard touchdown pass to junior Colin Ridley. This time Scalese hit the PAT to put Peabody on top, 13-0. Things continued to go downhill for the Sachems. On the ensuing drive, Peabody senior Jovante Dailey picked off Saugus quarterback Sean O’Rourke (2-11-23 yards-0-2) and returned it 39 yards to the end zone. After another successful point after from Scalese, that the masking guidelines for the upcoming winter season will be the same as the fall. “Student-athletes, coaches, and officials that are indoors shall be masked,” the memo said. Shea drove the Tanners 70 yards down the field in a little less than three minutes, capping the drive with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Dailey, which gave the Tanners a 34-0 lead after a successful PAT. Peabody kept its foot on the gas to start the second half. Starting at its 47-yard line, the Tanners went on a clock-eating drive, capped by a Shea-to-Batista three-yard touchdown pass with 5:30 left in the third quarter that gave Peabody a 41-0 lead. The Sachems showed some fight, thanks to captain Mark MacEachern, who broke off a 48-yard run. But, as it had done all game long, the Tanners’ defense came up with another big play, this one an interception by senior Jordan Thompkins. Saugus finally broke the ice in the fourth quarter on a threeyard touchdown rush from MacEachern with eight minutes to go in the game to cut the deficit to 41-6.
