within our busy premium car buying

They must also have a clean driving

licence.

The role involves organising vehicles

movements, communication and

liaison with our logistics staff and

retail partners. Data collection is

also a daily function. We are a very

busy organisation and as such they

must be flexible and adapt to the

fast pace of daily activity.

We operate 5 days a week,

Monday to Friday; we are not open

weekends or bank holidays. Full

training will be given.

Update from Norden WI

We held a successful Annual Meeting

on 4th November with 13 new members

joining making our numbers up to 49

members with 2 more potentials next

month. One of the highlights of the

evening was a power cut, just as the

Potato Pies had been put in the oven!

(thank Goodness for mobile phone

torches.)

Moving us into 2022, Chris Wolstenholme

was re-elected as President for another

year alongside a new committee and we

can promise you some inspiring speakers

and new ideas.

On Remembrance Sunday, our knitted

poppies were displayed once again in the

Memorial Gardens in Norden. There are

98 names of soldiers from Norden who

lost their lives in both World Wars.

The Outings and Lunch Groups went off

out together for a train ride, shopping

and lunch at The Piece Hall in Halifax in

November.

On 2nd December we are holding

“Ye Old-Fashioned Christmas Party”.

If you fancy coming along as a visitor,

please let us know, you will be very

welcome but Santa’s helpers will need

to add you to their list!

On 6th January 2022 the title of the

meeting will be “Not Guilty Your Worship”

Norden in Bloom lands Gold in

Northwest in Bloom competition

The village of Norden has

landed a gold award plus the

title of best newcomer in this

year’s Northwest in Bloom

competition.

Norden in Bloom, which entered as a

stand-alone village for the very first time this

year, captivated visiting judges claiming a

‘best newcomer’ award and a gold medal for

‘large village,’ which can only mean bigger

things to come for 2022.

Thirteen sites were visited on judging day in

the summer: Owd Betts, Ashworth Valley, St

James’ Chapel, a private garden, Taylor Park,

Norden Rockery, the Norden War Memorial,

the village, Norden Bowling Club, Moss Row

Community Allotments, Moss Row Woodland,

the award-winning Norden Jubilee Park and

Nutter’s Restaurant.

The group was presented with their win by

Bernard Pendleton, chairman of Northwest

in Bloom, at a special awards ceremony at

Number One Riverside, Rochdale on Thursday

4th November.

Paul Ellison, of Norden in Bloom, said: “I’m

speechless; to come out with not only gold but

best newcomer as well for a brand-new entry

is unheard of, especially when you consider we

had Covid to contend with…

“We couldn’t have done it without the great

team we created for Norden in Bloom and

everyone working tirelessly to make this

happen. I would also like to thank our sponsors

and special recognition to our partner,

Rochdale Borough Council, which came on

board despite this being a new entry.”

NEEVA (Norden Environmental and Economic

Village Association) and Firefly Security.

Judges were treated to a wonderous

wildflower display at the bowling green,

beautiful large planters at Taylor Park, lovingly

tended grounds at St James’ and the colourful

Norden Rockery, whilst the Moss Row

allotments benefited from a wildlife area and

pond with an adjacent community orchard

planted by Whittaker Moss Primary School.

Contributing to this year’s In Bloom efforts,

the Norden Environmental and Economic

Village Association (NEEVA) became the

first community group to adopt the council’s

saddle planters in Norden, which will cared for

by volunteers until the end of 2021.

Other projects discussed on judging day

included the annual Keep Britain Tidy

Great British Spring Clean which involved

approximately 50 volunteers clearing100

bags of rubbish from across Norden village,

Greenbooth, Ashworth, Birtle, Rooley Moor

and Caldershaw, as well as the problem of fly

tipping in Ashworth Valley and the installation

of five CCTV cameras throughout the valley to

help curb it as well as the trees planted during

lockdown.

If any of us thought we could sit back for a few weeks after the submission, the recent letter to

houses in the area regarding the consultation for a Sports Hub on the Bamford site reminded us to

keep on our toes.

A series of radio appearances, press releases and articles over recent weeks have highlighted that

the developers are pushing on trying to make the case for the housing, but with promises of sports

development that fail to mention the loss of greenbelt land, 450 houses or impacts on local traffic

and one-way systems.

You will see us out and about over the next few months as we collect our own evidence in

readiness for the next phase - checking traffic levels, traffic pollution, flooding to show that this is a

flawed plan.

We can be represented at that Public Examination and are looking to raise funds to pay for a

barrister to do this on our behalf.

Bamford Councillors’ Update

Covering Bamford Ward including Marland, Brimrod & Sudden

Your Ward Councillors are here all year round to offer help and advice on a wide range of local issues

It has been good to resume our surgery and meet residents face to face at Bamford Chapel on

the first Thursday of the month 10.30 -11.30am during the weekly coffee morning.

We were sorry to hear of the closure of Brimrod Methodist Church where we held a surgery on

the 2nd Thursday of each month. We are currently looking for an alternative venue which is

convenient for residents of Sudden, Brimrod and Marland.

By the time you read this we will hopefully have attended the first post Covid Forum, also at the

chapel, in November. Look out for news of Forums in the New Year; it is an opportunity to speak

to local police officers about local issues such as speeding and anti social parking.

We have been out with Highways officers, following your complaints and suggestions. Hopefully

the speed bumps on Martlett Avenue will soon be in place. Speeding is still a major issue in the

ward, as it is throughout the Borough and we are pleased that there is now a cross party

working group which is meeting with police officers to try to solve this problem.

The In Bloom awards were held early in November and there was good news for the Friends of

Bamford and the gardening group at Bamford Chapel who both gained “Outstanding” awards

for their work. Both areas are a credit to those who have worked so hard on them.

Our battle to prevent building on our Green Belt land continues. Many of you will have

responded to the Places for Everyone proposals, as did our own Bamford Green Belt Action

Group. We now have to wait until the Planning Inspector gives their verdict.

As Christmas approaches we are hoping to be able to meet you this year at the Christmas Fairs

and events which are held across the ward. Look out for new Christmas lights at Oulder Hill

shopping precinct!

The last month has been really busy in the ward with lots of local good news stories to

celebrate. Norden has once again been part of a successful North West in Bloom entry. The first

In Bloom entry featured our village over 12 years ago and it is great to see local features still

winning gold awards today.

We recently welcomed Manchesters High Sheriff to Scout Moor to see the combined efforts of

community, councillors, police and other local stakeholders in tackling the problem of illegal offroading

which has been damaging the moors and causing disruption and danger to other,

legitimate users. She was etremely impressed at just how effective the measures have already

proven to be in preventing unauthorised access.

We have had meetings with our ights of Way Officer regarding the footpath at Black ad and

are hopeful of a positive resolution on this when it comes to Township in the coming weeks.

We have been contacted by a number of residents who have had uestions and concerns about

the change of ownership and proposed remediation works at the TBA Turner Bros. Asbestos

site. Whilst we are pleased that the site is now owned by a company who a looking to engage

with the council we will be keeping a close watch on this important issue and ensuring that

public information and consultation is available to keep residents informed of all that is

happening.

We have begun to resume our ward surgeries where it is safe to do so, so if you have an issue

that you would like to discuss with us please check for available appointments. For those who

prefer we are always available on phone or email - details below.

We hope that the forthcoming Christmas and New Year period is a peaceful one for you, but we

installed in Norden, to reinforce the

message about inappropriate speed.

GARDENING TIPS AND ADVICE

FOR DECEMBER

1. Add some colour and interest to the garden with some winter flowering plants such as

hellebores, winter pansies and violas.

2. Birds need fresh water feeding at this time of year when short days leave them little time to

forage. Deck a garden tree with millet berries, rose hips, dried fruits, fresh apples, nuts and

special bird food.

3. Dig over beds and borders, incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Forking not only

helps prepare the soil for next year, it also helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds.

4. Colourful stems from willows and dogwoods, and berries from holly and ivy

can be cutand collected now for making natural Christmas decorations.

5. Protect less hardy shrubs and trees such as containerised bay and olives

by bringing them under cover in the coldest weather.

6. Protect pots and outdoor taps from frost by wrapping insulation

around them. Bubble wrap is ideal for this.

7. To enjoy fresh garnish in winter bring container-grown herbs such

as mint and chives to a windowsill indoors.

wins gold and outstanding

for five years in a row!

Norden’s Jubilee Park has been

named OUTSTANDING

by Northwest in Bloom for the

fifth year in a row, as well

as winning its third gold medal.

The small and scenic park once again

received the Royal Horticultural Society’s

highest grade of OUTSTANDING at the

It’s Your Neighbourhood awards, as well

as being bestowed with a golden RHS

Park Award accolade.

The Friends of Norden Jubilee Park were

presented with their award by Bernard

Pendleton, chairman of Northwest in

Bloom, at a special awards ceremony

at Number One Riverside, Rochdale on

Thursday 4th November.

Paul Ellison, Chairman of the Friends

of Norden Jubilee Park, said:

“Norden Jubilee Park and our Friends’

group has again risen to the occasion to

bring top marks back to Norden and we

would like to dedicate this award to our

late former chair, Susan Taylor.

This is due to the dedication of our

hardworking volunteers, which means

the park is enjoyed all year round by

residents and passers-by.”

The latest scoop of awards for the

green space – part of the Norden in

Bloom route – means it has achieved

the maximum level five recognition

‘Outstanding’ for five years running

since 2016, plus being a three-times gold

medal winner in 2021, 2019 and 2018.

Norden Jubilee Park also received

a national distinction award at the

2019 National Britain in Bloom awards,

one of just four presented across the UK.

The regional Northwest in Bloom

competition consists of two judging

days. The first is a guided tour taking in

areas of interest around Rochdale; the

second allows for visits to communitybased

projects that include local schools,

allotments, health and well-being

projects and conservation areas.

There was no contest last year due to

Covid-19, with all entrants being entered

into the 2021 Awards.

FESTIVE RECIPES

Spiced Party Nuts

Cheese Nibbles

INGREDIENTS

40g butter

1 tbsp olive oil

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Sprinkle garlic powder

1 tsp paprika

½ tsp cayenne pepper

350g mixed nuts

1 tsp coarse salt

METHOD

1. Heat oil and butter in a frying pan over a

medium heat.

2. Add all spices and mixed nuts.

3. Continue to cook stirring occasionally until

golden brown or transfer to a baking tray

and roast at 190C/ 170 fan or gas 5 for 15

to 20 minutes.

4. Cool and store for up to 1 month in an

airtight container.

INGREDIENTS

150g plain flour + pinch salt

100g butter

50g mature cheddar cheese grated

15g finely grated parmesan

1 egg yolk

1 tbsp water

Milk to glaze and 50g chopped walnuts

METHOD

1. Rub fat into flour to resemble breadcrumbs,

mix in cheeses and stir in egg yolk

and water to bind together.

2. Shape into a roll 2.5cm in diameter and

wrap in foil. Chill until firm.

3. Cut into 6mm slices and place on a baking

sheet. Brush with milk and sprinkle with

walnuts.

4. Bake at 200C/180 fan / Gas 6 for 15-20

minutes until pale golden in colour.

5. Cool and freeze or store in an airtight tin

for 2-3 days.

Rochdale in Bloom

wins gold and best town

centre in Northwest

Rochdale has pulled it out of the bag yet again in this year’s

Northwest in Bloom Awards after judges deemed its floral displays

and outstanding parks the pick of the bunch.

After what can only be described as a tough year, the council and community volunteers

were back scooping eight impressive gold awards across Rochdale, presented by Bernard

Pendleton, chairman of Northwest in Bloom at an awards ceremony at Number One

Riverside, Rochdale on Thursday 4 November.

The Rochdale in Bloom group were judged gold winners in the ‘small city’ category

and ‘best town centre’ in the Northwest.

A new entry this year saw judges visit five Rochdale mosques for the Masjids in Bloom

initiative. Supported by Rochdale Council of Mosques, the five masjids – Neeli, Central,

Golden, Jalalia and Bilal were visited with the Bilal Mosque

taking top spot after judges were wowed by the attention

to detail, environmental efforts and splash of colour.

A special trophy for outstanding contribution was

presented for the very first time to Mr Asrar Ul-Haq,

from the Amaani Initiative.

to him in recognition for his work in

the local community and Masjids in

Bloom.

Councillor Billy Sheerin and Imran Aslam also were awarded ‘outstanding contribution to

Northwest in Bloom.’

The Baum pub in Rochdale and Nutter’s restaurant won gold for the ‘small

accommodation’ award. Healey Dell Heritage Centre and Tea Rooms took the gold top

spot for ‘small tourist attraction’ and Norden’s Jubilee Park claimed gold in the best ‘pocket

park’ category again.

Norden in Bloom, which entered as a stand-alone village this year, captivated visiting

judges claiming a ‘best newcomer’ award and a gold medal for ‘large village,’ which can

only mean bigger things to come for 2022.

There were also awards for delightful displays and high levels of maintenance at

Denehurst Park, taking a silver gilt award in the ‘large park’ category. Kirkholt also took a

silver gilt in the ‘urban community’ award, and Stoney Hill community wildlife area took

the best ‘biodiversity award’.

Zen Internet took gold for ‘best small industrial park,’ and local resident Luca Higginson

won the ‘young bloomer of the year’ prize for his work on the Caldershaw wildflower

meadow.

Rochdale in Bloom chairman Roy Down said:

“Despite all the setbacks during the recent pandemic, our Rochdale in Bloom volunteers

have stepped up once again.

“The original plan for 2021, after all the recent restrictions, was to try and maintain our

standards. But the fantastic efforts by the volunteers and council staff mean we have

surpassed this and increased our gold medal haul of previous years.

“New initiatives like the Mosques in Bloom have really put our town on the map. I am so

proud of what we have achieved, and I work with an amazing group of people.”
