The year has been one of historical
whirlwinds and artists have put it into
creative and visual form. From a
political historical perspective, the
United States nearly lost its standing as
a democratic republic Through the
tyrannical efforts of a rogue president
and some of his followers the tradition of
of a duly elected new president was
an attempt at preventing this from
was documented thoroughly by
photography and video but artists also
used their creative ideas to provide their
personal documentation.
Monsters on All Sides”, Her conclusion
that the Biden Administration is also
continuing the bombing in Seria and the
war in the Middle East. The ambitious
painting completed only 8 weeks
part, shows have been delayed and
art marketing has taken a hit. One
artist, John Cerney, has created and
erected a unique mural of multi-colored
eight-foot-high popsicles being held by
hands located on Sunny Dunes Road
after the capital insurrection, shows
aspects of the capital invasion but also
continued warmongering throughout
Locally artists have struggled during the
across from the Tool Shed Bar. Carney
has been a mural artist for a number
of years with installations in California
and other states. This colorful cut-out
mural is a playful contrast to the art of
insurrection.
In the art world of hedge funders and
the uber-rich and those who can
afford art as speculation as well as
for aesthetic purposes the year 2021
found purchases over the 100 million
dollar range. That’s correct 100 Million
dollars being paid for single artworks of
which the following are some examples.
The winner in most expensive is the
purchase of a Picasso portrait painted
in 1932 of Mari-Therese Walter a model
or muse Picasso painted. The official
a Window” the actual sale price sold
through Christie’s New York was, $103.4
Botticelli is the sale of a Mark Rothko
painting rectangular about 6 feet high
with 3 color areas, orange, yellow,
million The colorful
abstract is typical
of Picasso’s work
of that period. The
price paid signals a
renewed popularity
of modernist art
styles.
Contrasting the
price of this abstract
is a Sandro Botticelli
painting completed
between 1470-80,
titled “Portrait of a Young Man holding
a Roundel”. A roundel is not a box of
Skoal but a round plate generally with
an insignia like a family coat of arms.
The representational aspect of this
painting contrasted with the abstract
of Picasso’s demonstrates the different
tastes of collectors. The sale price
of this work sold through Sotheby’s
New York was $92.1 million. Below the
$100million but substantial for an old
master’s painting. Another painting
in distinction to both the Picasso and
and pink titled “No.7, shown with two
attendants hanging it for auction. This is
the kind of minimalist painting you hear
people whispering in a gallery,” I could
do that” However they didn’t do that,
Mark Rothko did and last month it sold
for $82.5 million.
This year has been a year of tragedy
and contrast with artists documenting
the insurrection of the capital of the
country putting democracy in jeopardy
to that of various paintings from different
eras of history selling for enormous
dollar amounts of which the original
artists would be astounded in disbelief.
Possibly some connection between
insurrection and wealth and the
discussion of inequalities The new year
holds out hope that some of this may be
rectified, let’s hope that our fractured
politics can be restructured and social
benefits for all people can become a
reality inviting the artists of the new year
to display greater optimism in the art of
