Valentine’s day is commonly associated
with colorful greeting cards usually with
heart-shaped designs included and
sometimes including chocolates for your
partner or a loved one. However,
the history of Valentine’s day has a
darker beginning. Ancient Romans
may actually be responsible for modern
Valentine’s day. Emperor Claudius II is
credited for being responsible for the
name Valentinesince he executed two
Christian men on February 14 however
in different years but both were named
Valentine. The Catholic Church then
martyred both of the Valentine’s

Later Shakespeare and Chaucer
romanticized Valentines’ day in their
work. Chaucer, the author of “The
Canterbury Tales” called the day the
mating of birds day. In England the
month of February was the month of
bird mating and British nobility sent
love notes to their ladies. Handmade
paper cards and other tokens were
used to celebrate the day and soon
entrepreneurial artists and printers
began making and selling cards.

heart-shaped box for chocolates in 1832
The evolution of symbols for Valentines’
day also goes to the Roman god of
attraction and desire, Cupid. He is
usually portrayed as a chubby boy with
wings and a bow and arrow with which
he shoots the arrow at the victim of love.
Beyond Cupid, the heart symbol is the
one most commonly associated with
Valentines day. A popular theory is the
physical and emotional is in the heart
believed by philosopher Aristotle to be
the center of emotions. The shape of
the designed or drawn heart is believed
to be inspired by female breasts,
buttocks, and even the male scrotum as
an upside-down heart.

about 145 million valentines cards are
sent each year. The oldest known
valentine created about 1400 is on
display in the British Museum. The
greeting inside is “From Your Valentine”.
Whatever symbol of valentines day you
may choose to give to your loved one,
your mother, your brother, your cousin,
or your neighbor as long as it is given
with love it represents VALENTINE DAY.

Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center
announces the return of “One Night
Only” for the 16th year on November
9, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. at the beautiful
McCallum Theatre produced by
Michael Childers with returning director
Scott Coulter and music director
Todd Schroeder. This year’s theme is
“New York / New York” in all its glory
from Harlem and the Cotton Club to
Broadway and 42nd Street to Studio 54.
Much of the success of “One Night
Only” is attributed to the continued
dedication of the honorary co-chairs:
Helene Galen, Patti Grundhofer, Garry
Kief, Barry Manilow and Harold Matzner,
and event co-chairs Barbara Fromm
and Terri Ketover.
Past performers have included Tony®
Award winners and nominees including:
