Looking Up!

If you have been down into Town recently,

you may have seen all the new places to

go to eat and drink, along with a very large

construction site.

These works are continuing at pace and involves

the building of a 145 bedroom Hampton by Hilton

Hotel. It’s all part of a £50 million pound mixeduse

scheme of development for the town centre,

which will also see 245 new homes built. This will

comprise of one and two bedroom apartments.

Back nearer home, news of the application for

300 houses on the Fieldhouse Mills site, has

been dropped, much to the relief of the many

businesses that occupy that industrial site.

On the other side of the Ward, plans are afoot

to bring the former school playing fields at St

Wilfred’s back into use. Rochdale AFC Community section have made

proposals to the Council for the recreational area to be brought back into

play to accommodate both veterans football teams.

And talking of play, your local Councillors met up with the Council’s

Environmental Management department at the Coptrod Children’s park

with a view to developing the playground with more equipment and

associated pathways for better access, plus a plan to plant more trees

down at the lower level of this not too well known, green oasis in the

middle of Syke.

Finally, I promised an update from the Christmas and New Year article,

with regard to a Safety Camera. I can report that the funding has been

approved by the Township Committee and the camera will be used to deter

fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour along with a vehicle number plate

recognition facility. The camera will be fixed and powered from a lamppost,

just like the recent Christmas lights in Shawclough Village.

So you could say things are definitely ‘Looking Up!’

Syke Walk & Talk Group

RAMSDEN ROAD WALK

Ramsden road originally ran from

Wardle through the village of

Watergrove to Higher Slack 2 miles

to the north. Here it connected with

the Long Causeway an old pack horse

route to Ramsden and Walsden.

The construction of Watergrove reservoir in

1938 flooded Watergrove village and the

section of Ramsden road which ran through it.

The walk starts from Syke Chapel, is about

6 miles and includes a half mile section

of Ramsden road on the north side of

Watergrove. It mostly follows lanes and

trackways but there are a few sections on

pathways which can be muddy during wet

weather. There also several uphill sections but

nothing too daunting for reasonably fit walkers.

From Syke Chapel head north on Dewhirst

road and at the junction of the road with Ring

Lows lane go through the gate into a small

copse and follow the path towards Wardle.

Beyond Rydings reservoir The path reaches

Clough House Brook. Cross the bridge

and take the path to the left which runs up

eastern side of a small valley. Take care the

path is narrow and can be very muddy in wet

weather. At the top cross two stiles and turn

left heading towards the gate at the north end

of the field. Turn right onto Clough House lane

and follow it to the end at Lower House lane.

Opposite you is a trackway which brings you

to Watergrove reservoir. Turn right following

the road under the reservoir embankment and

through the car park which marks the end of

the southern stretch of Ramsden road from

Wardell.

At the end of the embankment turn left

following the track northwards. The date

stones from some of the buildings demolished

during the building of the reservoir have

been set in the reservoir wall and date to

the 17th and 18th centuries. More than

30 properties were demolished during the

reservoir construction. There are good views of

Watergrove and Brown Wardle from this side.

At the end of the trackway route turns right

onto Ramsden road close to the point where it

emerges from the reservoir.

Ramsden road is paved at this point and

ascends towards the moors above Watergrove

After about 400 yards the paved road stops

and continues as a trackway. Continue to

follow Ramsden road for another 400 yards

where it bends to the right. Take the trackway

on the left which descends towards the north

end of Watergrove. On entering the wooded

area look for a path to the right.

The first section is paved but eventually

continues as a footpath which is rutted and

often muddy. On reaching the trackway turn

left and follow this around Brown Wardle. The

path is undulating with good views across

Watergrove and past several farms demolished

during the construction of Watergrove

reservoir.

The site of Cartridge Nook Colliery is marked

by large spoil heaps. An elevated tramway took

coal as far as Lobden. Follow the tramway

and on reaching Lobden turn left leaving the

tramway. Follow the trackway with the golf

course on your right descending the last mile

along Dewhirst road to the starting point at

Syke Chapel.

Take this path which descends quite steeply

to cross the Higher Slack Brook by the bridge.

Follow the path until it ends at a trackway. Turn

right to enter Long Shoot Clough.

Syke Walk and Talk Group was

formed almost 15 years ago.

The walks are free to attend and lead by

trained walk leaders with a good knowledge

of Syke and the surrounding area. We offer

at least 2 walks each Friday all year round

and attempt to provide suitable walks

for all abilities.

Toilet facilities are normally available at Syke

Chapel who are also able to offer tea/coffee

and biscuits at modest prices after the walk.

Walks leave on Friday’s at 10am. Please

arrive around 9.45am for registration.

Our walks utilise public footpaths and roads

around Syke and we walk in all weathers.

It is important to come properly equipped

From The Archives

Almost every boundary set around a

part of England may be identified as

a parish and most parishes have their

own consecrated parish church open for

Christian worship and the pastoral care

of the people within that boundary.

The parish church in Rochdale is

administered as the Church of St Chad,

Chad being a 7th century churchman

possibly coming from a family of

Northumbrian nobility who had been a

student at Lindisfarne and became Abbot

of Lastingham and for a period, Bishop of

York. Chad died in the year 672 and the

town of Chadderton is most likely named

after him.

As mother church in the parish of Rochdale,

the earliest building of St Chad’s is a matter

of debate. Certainly there was a church on

the site overlooking the town of Recedham

or Rachedale in either the late Saxon period

or just after the Norman conquest, the mid

11th to early 12th centuries, although the

date is open to question. What is recorded

however is that in 1194 land was given by

Adam de Spotland for religious purposes

in order (as Wild in the 1970’s suggests) ‘to

save his soul and that of his family.’ The

current handsome gothic structure standing

up on its lofty ridge is not exactly the one

from the middle ages although the tower is

reputedly the oldest part of the building.

The siting of the church has been the

subject of the ‘fairy builders’ myth whereby

on a number of occasions the stones and

materials that had been assembled by

the River Roch near Newgate where the

church was supposed to be built, were

mysteriously and at night re-gathered at the

top of the hill where the church now stands.

Eventually accepting this supernatural

indication of its proper site required 124

church steps to be laid leading to the

religious place. Less romantically, the real

reason for the site would have been its

prominent place near a raised earthwork

which formed a nearby hill sometimes

called a ‘castle’ which overlooked the

valley and the Roch. Notwithstanding any

supernatural beginnings which would have

almost certainly have been discredited by

him, the first vicar of the church of St Chad

was Geoffrey de Lacey, Dean of Whalley in

1194. On Geoffrey’s death Roger de Lacey

gave the church to the Cistercian brothers

of Stanlow who later moved to Whalley

Abbey. Thereafter the vicars were Sir

William de Dumplinton in 1238, John de

Blackburne in 1250 and Roger de Marland

in 1277.

Structurally the building has been changed

over the centuries although Wild in his

short book on the subject suggests that

the remains of a Saxon wall were found

in the north west corner of the churchyard

as evidence of an early church. However,

re-building was carried out between 1470

and 1480 and, as a gift from Robert Belfield,

extensions added around 1530. It would

seem that the building became dilapidated

in the 18th century to such an extent that

Lord Byron paid for general renovation of

its walls and the roof. In the 19th century

a clock set in the tower was removed and

more recently Canon Nightingale ordered

work costing £40,000 carried out in 1952.

Architecturally there are interesting external

features to the church such as the West

door which has twin angels (one holding a

harp the other a timpani), the carvings of

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on the

tower as well as three fish representing the

roaches in the River Roch. Erected in 1873

the current porch replaced an older one

ordered by Henry Pigot the vicar in 1700

over which stands a fine carving of St Chad

holding up a church with angels to either

side of him.

There are different entrances to the

churchyard leading to the Parish Church,

one is by climbing the 127 steps, another

by the Lychgate and stocks and a third

by the western wall (a private entrance).

Interestingly, this high western wall was

erected by Dr Tunstall vicar between

1757-62 allegedly to prevent his daughters

playing with the local children for fear that

‘they might acquire a northern accent.’

In its interior in 1845 the church was known

to be heated by steam pipes. In the 19th

century Dr Molesworth told Dr Dearden,

both important townsmen, that people

were feeling the cold in church to which

Dearden replied ‘Tell them to drink a quart

of ale before they come to church and they

will noan be starved.’ Looking up from

their pews the cold congregation would

have seen a memorial window in the West

of the church designed by Burne-Jones

and dedicated to the parents of Clement

Royd with glass by William Morris. One

amusing aside concerning the church is an

entry in the churchwarden’s records of 1643

identifying expenses for ‘three hedgehogs,’

these being bought to keep the church free

of insects in the rushes which in those days

were laid to carpet and warm the interior of

the building.

Whitworth in Bloom

Following on from the article in June’s edition of Streetwise, we are pleased to say that the

Whitworth in Bloom volunteers were delighted to be presented with the Silver Gilt Ward by

the North West in Bloom judges who visited the town in July. This is a significant step up from

their Silver Award given in 2019.

The group expanded on the green areas they had previously established by, amongst other

ventures, renovating Healey Corner, taking on board diversity by building a Beasties’ BnB and

making the planters outside the Fudge Factory so much more colourful.

Town Clerk, Melanie Hearn said, ‘The volunteers kick-started

their initiative with serious litter-picking in March which has been

continued as a daily activity by several members of the community.

Plans and ideas for formal and more informal planting soon followed

with individuals and small groups taking the initiative for various

areas within the 4-mile length of the town. All their hard work has paid

off with this well-deserved accolade.’
