Honestly. Do you even have to
know what One Step Too Far is
about? It’s Lisa Gardner. You know
you’re going to read it. But in case
... five men head into the woods
for a bachelor party weekend.
Only four return. Years later, he’s
still missing. His friends are still
searching. They, together with a
missing person specialist, return
to the woods and hike deep into
the wilderness. And you know
nothing is going to go according
to plan. Edge-of-your-seat stuff.
Love a thriller with a twist in the tale. And in Sarah
Bonner’s Her Perfect Twin, the twist hits you half
way through the book ... so unexpected and fast it
could give you whiplash. Leah has everything she’s
ever wanted ... fame, fortune, and freedom to do
what she wants. But she’s always wanted everything
her identical twin sister Megan has, too.
And when Megan snoops on her husband’s phone
and finds revealing, provocative photographs of her
estranged sister, it appears Leigh’s after her husband,
as well. What follows is murder, a cover-up, secrets,
abusive relationships and a new romance, and a setback
due to a Covid lockdown. And then
there’s another wowza twist. This is Sarah’s
first novel ... we can’t wait for the next one. Brilliant!
Marizelle, or Maz as she is better
known to friends and family, wasn’t
always the picture of health she is
now. At the tender age of 15, she had
a brain tumour removed. “I was on
treatment for it until the age of 20,” she
says. “In my final year at varsity, I was
diagnosed with fibromyalgia, which
was actually a relief, because I had
been battling with some very strange
symptoms and constant pain,” she
explains. After finishing her matric year,
Maz attended a Gap Academy, which
gives you a year to do a variety
of short courses, helping
you to find your future path.
“This is where I found my
calling,” she says. “I absolutely
adored my health, wellness and
fitness course, which led me to study
kinesiology, a field of health in which
you learn how to assist the body in
healing itself by using muscle testing
to find imbalances.”
Maz soon discovered she had a keen
interest in sports, fitness and nutrition,
and how these factors influence our
bodies to perform better. “I went on
to do a degree in sports science with
the hope of becoming a fitness coach
or personal trainer at the end of it.
However, when that was completed, I
eisty
With her bubbly attitude, ready smile and
beautifully toned figure, Marizelle Grobler is the
very essence of health and vitality. Get it catches
up with her and husband, JP.
managed to get good enough grades
to further my degree with an honours
in biokinetics, and that was where
my passion for helping people with
rehab through exercise modalities and
chronic disease management grew.”
She completed her internship year at
a practice in Ballito, which she loved,
with its laid-back vibe and health- and
fitness-conscious outlook. “I fell in love
with the town, and continued working
there as a biokineticist at a beautiful
gym in Zimbali Estate. I absolutely
Fab, fit &
loved my lifestyle there, and I lived and
breathed work 24/7.”
This mindset unfortunately led
to burnout just before the Covid
pandemic and subsequent lockdown
hit. “I was really in the thick of my
all-or-nothing approach at work,
struggling to find balance, overexercising
and under-eating, and
about 10kg heavier than I am now. My
body just had enough, I suppose, and
I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary
syndrome. It forced me to completely
change the way I eat and how I
exercise, and I started researching selfcare
and finding balance in all areas
of my life. I always say, as crazy as it
sounds, that lockdown was my saving
grace, because in hindsight, although
I loved my job, I really had no balance
whatsoever.”
Maz met her husband, JP, in 2015 at
the gym where they both trained,
but at the time she had no interest in
a relationship. “I had set myself very
high goals,” she says, “and I just didn’t
need complications or distractions as
a student. I laugh at this now. He was
a rugby player - fit, handsome and
seemed to really have his life in order,
and there was no real reason to keep
declining. Then, after a year of this guy
It was very important for me to find
health and lifestyle. Well, after that, the
rest was history.”
Leaving her job and a cute little flat
overlooking the ocean was never
part of the plan for Marizelle, but
‘I feel women
should be given
the tools to really
understand their
bodies’
sometimes life happens and you
have to change direction. “Everything
happened suddenly,” she says. “JP had
been very sick due to Covid, and then
his grandfather passed away, and his
family needed him to help on the
farm. His job had also taken a knock,
although my job was just getting back
on track, and we’d planned to get
married in Ballito. We thought about
it and made the decision to take a
leap of faith, move to Mpumalanga
and start afresh after our wedding.
My husband is in his element here,”
she smiles.
“We have two doggos and they love
the farm. There is so much open
space for them to play in. Now, in my
spare time I like to be outdoors - I love
going for walks, playing with the dogs,
golfing on weekends and connecting
with family over an afternoon braai. We
are home bodies, so we spend lots of
time at home rather than being out
and about. We enjoy going to Marloth
Park and the Kruger, we love doing
self-drives, packing a picnic basket
and just travelling from point A to B,
admiring nature. We also have family in
Mbombela, and we try to visit as often
as possible - it’s just around the corner
now rather than a full day’s trip.”
Living on the farm means that Maz has
had to adapt her training methods,
and she uses various online platforms
to connect with her clients through
her studio, MazBiofit, which includes
biokinetics, Pilates, personal training
and health coaching. She also utilises
kinesiology principles to help her
clients with mental health, mindset and
lifestyle modifications. “How it works is
I do consultations with my client, and
then prescribe exercise or nutrition.
We’ll set up a session, which is usually
30-60 minutes long, where we chat
online using Zoom. From there I draw
up their plan, which includes exercise
prescription, nutritional changes, lifestyle
modifications and mindset work. They
receive the entire plan via an app I
use that allows me to keep track of
everything the client logs. For example, I
can see when they do a workout, which
is great for accountability and keeping
clients motivated.
“We also have weekly check-ins in which
we discuss difficulties or challenges,
just as you would chat to your coach
in person. I continually make changes
to the plan as needs be. The thing
about one-on-one coaching is that it’s
tremendously individualised, so no one
plan will look like another; there’s no
monotony. I also offer live online Zoom
exercise training sessions, Pilates and
final-phase rehabilitation,” she adds.
Two things Maz is especially passionate
about, are holistic health and women’s
JP and Maz
08 Get It Lowveld March 2022
health. She believes that holistic health
is the way forward when it comes to
treating disease, as well as general
well-being and fitness. “A holistic
approach takes into account the
entirety of the person - it isn’t a case
of just looking at certain aspects. It
looks into the patient’s lifestyle, what
they eat, if and how they move, and it
factors in variables like sleep and stress.
All of these lifestyle factors have a
profound effect on how you feel; your
energy levels and your mental health.
I am also passionate about women’s
health,” she continues. “I feel women
should be given the tools to really
understand their bodies, such as why
we experience fluctuations in energy,
mood and weight. I teach all of this in
my one-on-one coaching services; we
adjust workouts, nutrition and
rest according to each woman’s
unique needs.”
Maz’s future plans include growing
her online presence and online health
coaching business, making an impact
via her specific coaching principles,
and leading by example. “We also
hope, God willing,” she says, shyly, “that
we will have a two-legged baby in the
near future. Our four-legged babies are
like our children. Let me just add that if
you’re a dog person, I already like you!”
Maz and JP say their goodbyes on their
way to pick up a young sibling at Curro
Nelspruit. “I hope the traffic won’t be
too heavy,” JP muses, “although we may
as well get used to it - it will be good
practice for when we have our own!”
Inner peace
Certified reiki practitioner
Larissa Mulder-Barnett
knows just how important
a sense of peace and
balance is, and after
having gone through her
own journey of healing,
she feels that the time is
right for her to share that
knowledge.
Text: MELLISSA BUSHBY
Larissa Mulder-Barnett
Reiki is a powerful yet non-invasive
ancient Japanese energy healing
technique that accelerates the body’s
own healing abilities. “The word ‘reiki’
is a combination of two Japanese
words: ‘rei’ which means ‘spiritual
consciousness’ or ‘the higher power’,
and ‘ki’, which means ‘life force energy’,”
explains Larissa, “which flows through
all living things. “Reiki is not part of
any religion or belief system and is
a safe and non-intrusive technique
that balances the chakras or energy
centres in the body and heals on all
levels - spiritual, emotional, mental and
physical. Reiki is one of many tools that
can assist healing and growth.”
She goes on to explain that in order
to heal, people need to truly feel
their emotions, to acknowledge and
observe them. “People often numb and
suppress their emotions by drinking
excessively, eating too much and
working too much, or even exercising
excessively. This won’t solve anything,”
she adds. “Reiki aids in rebalancing the
body that has been affected by years
of trauma or suppression of emotions.”
A reiki session lasts between 45 and
60 minutes and rebalances the mind,
body and spirit. It relieves tension
10 Get It Lowveld March 2022
and stress, increases vitality and energy, and acts as a detox, helping the body
eliminate toxins and strengthening the immune system. “The client lies, fully
clothed on a massage bed, while the practitioner gently puts their hands on or
just above the body and promotes healing by encouraging a healthy flow of
energy and balancing the seven chakras, which are the main energy centres in
the body. When all your chakras are open, the energy can flow freely between
them without any blockages.”
“I would love to help people on their journey of healing,” Larissa smiles. “Having
gone through the process myself, I feel the time is right to share this with others.”
She sums it up with a favourite quote by Debbie Ford: “The purpose of our
journey is to restore ourselves to wholeness.”
Details
To book a reiki session at Dragonfly Reiki Therapy, contact her on 074 149 0309
The benefits of reiki:
• Improves mood
• Enhances overall well-being
• Aids in depression, insomnia,
anxiety
• Reduces stress
• Works on imbalances
• Boosts immune system
• Relieves pain
• Eliminates toxins
• Relaxes and calms the mind
• Assists in releasing negative
thoughts and emotional baggage
• Increases creativity
• Increases awareness of self.
The seven chakras:
1
The
root or base chakra. It
represents our foundation.
When the root chakra is
open, we feel confident in our
ability to withstand challenges
and stand in our own power.
When it is blocked, we feel
threatened and unstable.
2
The sacral chakra. This
chakra helps us relate to
our emotions and those of
others. It governs creativity and
sexual energy. If it is blocked,
it could feel like you are out of
control.
3
The solar plexus chakra.
The solar plexus is where
your confidence lies. If this
chakra is blocked, you might feel
shame and self-doubt. Those
with an open solar plexus chakra
feel free to express themselves
and let others see them for who
they truly are.
4
The heart chakra. This is
the bridge between the
lower and upper chakras. It
can influence your ability to give
and receive love - from others
and ourselves. A person whose
heart chakra is blocked might
have difficulty fully opening
up to people and showing
their vulnerability. If your heart
is open, you experience deep
compassion, empathy and love.
5
The
throat chakra. This
chakra is our voice and
controls our ability to
communicate our personal
power. It allows us to express
ourselves fully, truly and openly.
6
The third eye chakra. It
controls our ability to
connect with our intuition.
It is the eye of the soul and
registers information beyond the
surface level.
7
The crown chakra. It sits
at the top of the head
and enables us to be fully
connected spiritually and feeling
at one with all that is.
Take the #30dayrewild challenge for healthy skin
Here’s a challenge well worth taking up. Esse’s #30dayrewild challenge is all
about cutting out harmful chemicals and getting your best skin back in 30 days.
What’s it all about? Humans have been upsetting the balance in nature for too
long ... the pollution of the environment has had devastating consequences
for ecosystems around the world, and in much the same way, cheap synthetic
chemicals in modern skincare regimes upset the balance of the skin’s natural
microbiome. So rather than healing the skin, the increased use of chemicalbased
product has polluted its ecosystem, leading to a rise in sensitivity and
inflammatory skin conditions.
On top of that, we’re living in an age where dirt has been demonised by an
industry that promotes sterile as healthy. But all those deep-cleansing routines
strip the skin of natural oils. It’s time to end the war on germs. Half of the cells in
your body are ‘germs’ and you need them for optimal health.
The challenge is all about returning skin to its
roots. And to make it easy, there’s an
Esse Sensitive Skin #30dayrewild
Pack, which includes an
ultra-gentle range of
products designed to
strengthen barrier
function and
support healthy
skin microbiome.
There are preand
probiotics, it
is pH-balanced,
but there
are no harsh
preservatives
or synthetic
chemical
ingredients.
Available are a
Sensitive Cleanser,
Sensitive Toner,
Nourish Moisturiser,
Protect Oil, and Resurrect
Serum (and these last two
are game-changers ... the oil
forms a protective layer on
skin, reducing the damage done by
external aggressors such as UV rays and free radicals, and the serum hydrates
and plumps the skin, addressing signs of ageing without initiating an
immune response).
This is more than just a focus on skin health, it represents a lifestyle change that
values the importance of healthy, natural ecosystems, so for the best results, Esse
encourages you to consider a few simple changes that offer long-term benefits
... eat whole, organic foods, get regular exercise and get out into nature wherever
possible. It can even be as simple as buying an indoor plant!
This limited edition package (promo ends April) costs R930 (half the price of the
products bought separately), and you’ll find it at all Esse stockists. Follow Esse on
Instagram for info on prizes for taking part in the challenge, and visit esseskincare.
THE ART OF
BALANCE
Keeping mind, body and spirit
in equilibrium isn’t always easy,
but should be a priority in the
hurly-burly days we live in.
Slowing down, keeping calm
and making time to breathe are
all part of maintaining a healthy
outlook, both physically and
mentally. If there is one thing
we have learnt from the last two
years, it’s that life is precious;
we need to slow down and give
thought to the impact our habits
are having on ourselves and our
Earth. Fitness, meditation, holistic
healing and mindful eating are
the way forward, and once you
start practising a little me-time,
on the side of healthy, you’ll soon
HEALING HANDS
A holistic approach to
the root cause of the
problem and addressing
it. We chat to three wellknown
Text: MELLISSA BUSHBY
JULIE MOSTERT
A down-to-earth holistic health
practitioner, Julie makes use of muscle
testing to access the subconscious
mind, obtaining precise information
about what the body needs to attain
harmony and balance before any
underlying issues turn to illness or
disease.
She uses kinesiology to treat the whole
body emotionally, physically, mentally
and energetically. “This non-invasive,
hands-on, personalised holistic
treatment is used to treat the whole
body,” Julie explains. “Using the art of
muscle testing, I am able to correct the
underlying cause of a problem rather
than simply treating the symptoms. I
have access to a wide range of gentle
yet effective corrections, which activate
someone’s own natural self-healing,
thereby restoring harmony and wellbeing.
You’ll feel lighter, calmer and
clearer, and you will experience an
overwhelming, complete sense of
balance.” She goes on to explain what
a wonderful tool this is for clearing
unconscious patterns and limiting
beliefs, bringing about positive change.
Kinesiology is safe for all ages. “You are
fully clothed and lie down in a quiet
Julie Mostert
and supportive environment,” Julie says,
adding how beneficial the treatment is
for stress, trauma, headaches, anxiety,
insomnia, emotional issues, fatigue,
lack of confidence, physical aches and
pains, fears, and nutritional deficiencies.
“I’ve always had an interest in
alternative healing,” she explains,
“though it wasn’t what I studied after
school. It was only when my children
were very young and keeping them
well-balanced and healthy was a
priority, that I embarked on this
journey in 2000. My word! Is it that long
already?” she laughs. “I guess being
passionate about what I do just makes
time fly! Of course, alternative healing
methods were not as easily recognised
then as they are today, but I’ve always
felt it’s so important to treat the whole
body. I believe this couldn’t be more
applicable in these latter years, where
one’s mental and emotional health
has been challenged greatly, and not
just in the physical ways. While there
isn’t a pill for an emotion, we really
do live in a quick-fix society where
just about every ailment is treated by
20 Get It Lowveld March 2022
pharmaceuticals.”
Julie strives to live in the here and now,
but looking ahead, she hopes she will
still be doing exactly what she is doing
now, making a tangible difference in
the lives of the people who come to
her for help, whether it’s remote or
in-house sessions. “Life is fragile,” she
muses, “and as much as we make plans
and set goals for the future, we need to
embrace the now.”
DESMOND BOWMAN
Desmond understands the significance
of detecting abnormalities in the body
before they become life-threatening.
A practitioner of herbal and natural
medicine, he works with holistic
treatments to identify and eradicate
toxins and negative energy before it
becomes life-threatening.
Fortunately, more and more people
are starting to make the connection
between your thoughts and the power
they wield over your physical body.
“Negative thoughts can manifest as
sickness and disorder in the body,”
explains Desmond. “People who store
negative thoughts such as fear or
anger, are prone to disease. I think of it
as nesting dolls, the principle of adding
layer upon layer, all of which fit snugly
into each other, year after year, until
eventually the body can no longer
cope with it. You need to find the root
cause of the trauma and deal with it,
let it go.”
He helps people to heal by various
means of energy healing. One of
those is the Scientific Consciousness
Interface Operations System (SCIO).
SCIO is a mechanism that makes use
of holistic medicine with advanced
quantum technology, imparting
information about the negative
aspects of someone’s health by
focusing on the electric reactivity
patterns in the body. “I became very ill
around eight years ago,” Desmond says,
“and realised that I needed to make
a drastic change. I started with theta
healing, working to heal myself, and
was overwhelmed by the results. I then
decided to branch out into quantum
healing and SCIO therapy.”
SCIO works in a similar way to a
computer, scanning the body for
anomalies. “In the same way that you
would store files on your hard-drive,
you store negative energy in your
cells. SCIO scans through these to
find out what has gone wrong and
how to fix it.” Desmond goes on to
‘I started with theta
healing, working
to heal myself, and
was overwhelmed
by the results’
explain that SCIO holds the ability to
detect and scan anything from a virus,
deficiency, allergy, weakness and even
food sensitivities in the body. After the
scan is complete, SCIO then measures
Desmond Bowman
vitamin levels, amino acids, nutrients,
food substances, minerals, enzymes,
natural sugars, toxins, hormone levels,
muscle tone, disease, bacteria moulds,
fungi, viruses and the health of a
person’s organs. These aspects are
then measured to determine whether
there are any negative imbalances
within the body. SCIO is non-invasive
and pain-free, using electromagnetic
signals via wrist and ankle straps, and a
headband. Desmond is also qualified in
theta healing, a meditative technique
in which both practitioner and
patient are in a theta brainwave state,
completely relaxed and calm.
“Theta healing helps you to come
to terms with your thoughts and
whichever unbalancing factors are
present in the subconscious, enabling
the practitioner to locate the problem
and address the issue accordingly.
Theta healing lowers stress and anxiety,
minimising pain and discomfort. Theta
healing also helps you to enhance
creativity and increases mental clarity.”
Quantum healing involves a wide
mixture of different spectrums, such
as quantum mechanics, philosophy,
psychology and neurophysiology
combined.
“Quantum healing supports the idea
that a person can heal their body, mind
and spirit by shifting their energy at a
quantum level, using their life force to
bring about change in the body with
the help of the practitioner. Because
ultimately,” Desmond smiles, “everything
is energy, and we need to tap into that.”
LIDA PRETORIUS
Specialising in the enhancement of
physical and emotional well-being, Lida
makes use of bioresonance scanning
and muscle testing to establish various
physical and emotional imbalances in
the body, or in a nutshell, the science of
kinesiology.
Lida Pretorius
22 Get It Lowveld March 2022
Kinesiology works on the premise of
balance on three levels, the emotional,
biochemical and structural. “It changed
my life,” she says. “I was constantly sick
and unable to get well, and in 2006, I
started kinesiology. I was so inspired
by my own healing process that I
decided to further my studies in this
field.” Lida’s passion lies in helping
people to regain their balance and live
a thriving life - her brand is #leefaspris
(live with purpose), and she certainly
does just that. She also employs a bit
of adventure to help people face their
fears head-on.
“We do abseiling out of my office
window!” she laughs, “Along with
swimming in rivers, building rafts, and
bush walks in Big 5 reserves as part of
the healing process.”
By using the body’s biofeedback
system, muscle testing pinpoints
issues that can stem from childhood,
as far back as before you were born.
Using this method, Lida has helped
countless people find the root cause
of their trauma, recognise it, and let
it go. “I love to see people become
whole again,” she says, adding that
apart from eradicating unresolved hurt
and identifying trapped emotional
trauma, kinesiology also helps children
with ADHD, detects allergies, clears
Lida’s passion lies
in helping people
to regain their
balance and live a
thriving life
up energy blockages, pinpoints what
limits your belief in yourself and helps
you to resolve it. It can even identify
why you struggle to lose weight or
stop smoking.
Lida’s sessions include biochemical
balancing, consciousness shifting and
calibration, visualisation for enhanced
future performance, biochemical stress
reduction and support, nutritional
scanning, and meridian and herbal
chemistry balancing, all of which
go a long way towards making you
understand what holds you back and
how to deal with it effectively.
She goes on to explain that it takes
the brain 21 days to get used to a
new idea and 63 days to form a new
pathway. “The neuroplasticity in the
brain allows it to renew thought
patterns, paradigms and belief systems,”
Lida adds.
By addressing people’s physical and
emotional imbalances with the help of
kinesiology, she has helped individuals
ranging from the age of six to 88,
helping them to find the root cause of
a problem, be it a disease, emotional
trauma, or a mental block. Her passion
and love of her work and her field are
evident in the way she speaks, and the
glint in her eye when she talks about
some of her bush trips makes you
want to don your hiking boots and
tag along.
Stick to your intentions
Whether you’ve decided that 2022 is the year you hit your
health and fitness goals once and for all or if you want to
continue your progress from last year, here are some tips
from the Herbalife Nutrition team .... tips to help
you stick to your intentions.
Move to something you love
The great thing about exercise is the
variety. If running around the block or
lifting weights at a gym aren’t your
thing, try dance classes, Zumba, or
yoga. The trick is to find something
you love to keep you mentally
motivated while you move that
body. You can also give your
exercise of choice an extra kick by
adding some uplifting background
music to it. This will help you match
your movements to the beats and
keep you pushing forward. Create a
workout playlist of all your favourites.
Give group activities a go
There’s an African proverb that says ‘if you
want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far,
go together’. Exercising in a group is the perfect way to get
active if you tend to throw in the towel early on. Not only
will a group setting motivate you to keep going and keep
up with your peers, but it can be a lot more fun. Start small
by asking a friend to join you for a weekly walk or jog. For
the more adventurous, you can sign up for group exercise
classes, join a hiking group, try Parkruns, or volunteer for a
sports team at your local community sports centre.
Say yes to dinner parties
Say what? Attending a dinner party can be quite terrifying
... delicious, tempting dishes every which way you look.
But instead of isolating yourself to maintain your goals,
compromise. Your friends will most likely understand your
requests and try to accommodate you. In fact, it may be just
the thing they need to kick-start their own desire to make
healthy changes. And if you’re lucky enough to have a group
of friends who share your passion for nutrition, set up a
dinner club. Each person can host a dinner party and cook
a delicious healthy meal for the rest of the group. It’s a great
way to discover new recipes and share experiences and tips
for better health and wellness.
Even if you mess up here and there, remember the key is not
to beat yourself up about it and get back on the horse. 2022
is a time for transformative change, so make the most of it.
No pain no gain. Work out
with The Crazy Store Pulse
Active range ... yoga ball,
R179.99, fitness AB wheel, R99.99
and Netball R199.99
Get crazy fit
For those of you who’re wanting to get your blood pumping but
aren’t keen on going to a gym, take a look at The Pulse Active
range at The Crazy Store. For yogis, there are mats and balls,
blocks and straps; for gymers there are ab wheels and twist
trainers and pedal resistance bands, multi toners and hand
grips and quick-dry towels. You can grab a pair of gym gloves
and push-up bars, or raise your heartbeat with a high-speed
jump rope. Too much? There’s swimming gear and family-fun
Keep
and meditate
These days, many of us
feel as if we can’t keep
up; there’s always another
deadline, longer hours
and extra projects, not to
mention the hustle and
bustle of the school run,
sports and extracurricular
activities every day. We
constantly feel drained,
emotionally and physically.
Incorporating meditation into your
daily schedule is a simple and fast way
to reduce stress, bringing a little peace
of mind in an otherwise chaotic world.
There are a number of advantages to
this ancient practice of mindfulness.
Meditation is simple; it is merely the art
of focusing attention and awareness to
create a quiet, ordered state of mind.
You don’t need any fancy equipment,
it’s inexpensive, and you can do it
wherever you are and whenever
you feel the need to calm down and
organise your thoughts.
Used for centuries as a way of
connecting with spirit and heightening
our understanding of mystical and
sacred energies, meditation leaves you
feeling relaxed and peaceful, resulting
in an enhanced state of emotional and
24 Get It Lowveld March 2022
physical well-being. Some studies also
show that in certain cases, meditation
may help with the management of
anxiety, depression, chronic pain,
high blood pressure, IBS, disrupted
sleep patterns, migraines and tension
headaches.
Think of your mind as a computer or
phone that is constantly gathering and
sorting through data and information,
filtering what it needs, discarding what
it doesn’t.
Eventually, burnout and overload
become too much to ignore. Whether
you are stuck in traffic, sitting at your
desk, going for a walk or sitting in a
doctor’s waiting room, you can take 10
minutes to focus and bring your mind
back into perspective - clearing away
the overload of information that builds
up on a daily basis, creating stress and
anxiety.
The most important elements to remember
• Breathing - take deep, even breaths,
expanding your lungs and slowing
your breathing rate down
• Concentration - free your mind of
any distracting thoughts and try to
focus on your breathing or a mantra
• Surroundings - in the beginning, try to
meditate somewhere quiet, preferably
where you won’t be disturbed
• Position - you can meditate while
walking, lying down or sitting up - the
key is to be comfortable.
There are many different types
of meditation, and many of the
techniques that are aimed at relaxation
of the body and mind are based on
forms or elements of meditation,
such as visualisation, mindfulness,
Qi Gong, mantras, yoga and Tai Chi.
You can attend classes for any of
these, and there are also a number
of downloadable apps (some of
them free).
Meditating need not be rigid and
formal, and don’t be put off by the
thought of sitting stiffly on a yoga mat
and chanting “ohm” at regular intervals
- unless that is how you want to do it.
You can choose to start or end your
day with a session or snatch a few
minutes during the day when you have
a gap - the key is that time spent must
be quality time. Practising meditation
can be as simple as becoming more
aware of your body and concentrating
on various sensations, deep, focused
breathing, reading sacred texts or
poetry, praying, listening to beautiful
music, writing in a journal or sketching.
There are no hard and fast rules. This
is about serenity and mindfulness,
and anything that makes you feel
stressed or uncomfortable has
no place. Learning how to keep
your mind focused takes time and
patience. Adapt your time and type of
meditation according to how you are
feeling and an easy rhythm will soon
start to form, and you will find that
your emotional, mental and physical
health will thank you.
The emotional benefits
of meditation
• Gaining a new perspective on
stressful situations • Building skills
to manage your stress • Increasing
self-awareness • Focusing on
the present • Reducing negative
emotions • Increasing imagination
and creativity • Increasing patience
and tolerance.

Pack a snack
tempting to grab a quick
While the odd cheeseburger and
fries or icing-slathered doughnut are
never a bad thing, they are not the
ideal meal or snack to indulge in on a
regular basis. Because most processed
fatty food is high in sugar, saturated
fat, salt, trans fats and empty calories,
it can lead to obesity, heart disease
and strokes, constipation, high blood
pressure and increased anxiety and
mood swings, among other things.
A little planning and forethought is all
you need to circumvent this. Doing
some initial prep for home-made,
nutritious snacks to pack in your lunch
box, as well as making sure you have a
stash of nutritious pick-me-ups, is easy
once you get into the habit, whether
you are trying to shed a few extra
kilos, keep your energy levels up, or
give the kids a boost throughout the
day. Bear in mind that if you are in and
out of meetings, something that you
can grab and eat on the go is ideal,
and if you are going to be on the road
for long periods of time, you’ll need
to pack something non-perishable.
Whether you have a hectic schedule
and very little time, need something
more substantial than a health bar,
or just want a few titbits to graze on
during the day (or have ravenous
kids who do plenty of sport), there
is a healthy snack that will suit your
lifestyle perfectly.
First things first, what you
need to consider before you
start:
• Look for wholegrains and complex
carbohydrates, which are better for
you and are also more filling.
• Protein and fibre are what will keep
you going until your next meal, so
make sure you have some of both.
• Be wary of added sugar and salt,
which lurk in many so-called healthy
foods. Natural sugars such as those in
fruit are fine.
• Don’t overdo it. Unless your snack is
replacing a meal (in which case it will
be more than a handful of nuts and
an apple), it should be sufficient to
sustain until your next mealtime.
• Steer clear of junk food. It’s high
in calories and low in nutrients,
and once the habit forms it is hard
to break.
Getting started:
Depending on your schedule, you can
make a list of the nutritious snacks
you want to eat for the week, and
prepare them ahead of time, or you
can make them the night before.
Items like muffins (spinach and
feta, sun-dried tomato and olive, for
example) can be frozen and taken out
as needed, while boiled eggs, fruit
or yogurt can be packed ahead of
time, ready to grab and go the next
day. This goes for adults and kids, and
anything that is packed ahead of time
for the little ones can be put on a low
shelf in the fridge or pantry, ready for
them to grab on their way to school
or their extracurricular activities.
Perishables in the lunch box can be
kept cool in a cooler bag.
Types of snacks:
You can either make or buy healthy
snacks, but remember, home-made
is always better, that way you know
exactly which ingredients went into
Roast chickpea recipe:
• Preheat your oven to 220°C. • Rinse the contents of a 410g tin of
chickpeas, then lightly pat dry on a paper towel. • Spread the chickpeas
out onto a baking sheet. • Drizzle with a little olive oil, then add sea salt
and a sprinkling of spices. • A delish mix is cumin, smoked paprika and
black pepper, but you can add garam masala, dried rosemary, nutritional
yeast or plain salt. • Roast for around 30 minutes, shaking the baking pan
a few times for even roasting, until golden and crispy. • Leave to cool and
add to a trail mix or eat as is. Enjoy!
your lunch box. Fresh and dried fruit,
yogurt, nuts and biltong can be
purchased and added as extras or
incorporated into your menu.
• Trail and snack mixes • Granola •
Fruit bars • Muffins • Sandwiches •
Smoothies • Salad and breakfast jars •
Hard-boiled eggs • Crunchies and oat
cookies • Popcorn • Soups • Crackers
The above can all be made ahead
of time. Sandwiches must be on
wholegrain bread, and there are any
number of delicious fillings - hummus,
tapenade, cold meat, peanut butter,
cheese, tomato and cucumber. Veggie
fingers with a tzatziki or hummus dip
are tasty and nutritious.
Another delicious, wholesome
and nutritious snack to include in
your lunch box is chickpeas, which
become golden, crunchy and moreish
when roasted. Chickpeas are an
excellent source of protein and fibre,
and are an easy, cost-effective way to
up the nutritional profile of just about
any recipe. You can eat them as is, or
you can add a handful of nuts (of your
choice - almond, cashew, macadamia
or peanut, or a mix of all these, goji
berries, pumpkin, sunflower and
sesame seeds, and a scattering of dark
chocolate chips.

WHO’S
THERE?
In 1981, Shakin’ Stevens was lyrical about
the secret hidden behind the green door. He
was onto something for sure. Have you ever
stood in front of a door that wouldn’t open?
Or worse yet, have you been caught inside
a building with one that wouldn’t unlock,
leaving you trapped inside? It sounds like
the stuff of nightmares …
The door is an important part of our
lives, whether literally or symbolically.
One door that is always open is BUCO
Nelspruit’s. And if you are in the market
for a new door, that should be the one
you walk through.
The company boasts a wide variety of
doors that aim to protect while being
aesthetically pleasing. Entrance doors
are our barriers to the outside world.
They keep the right ones in and the
wrong ones out, but should also
provide peace of mind and security to
those inside.
Mariska Hen-Boisen, Shannon
Oldewage or Collen Thibela will help
you choose the best option at BUCO
Nelspruit. If modern pivot doors are
your style, they will be able to show
the way to your ideal ones. They also
have more traditional doors with brass,
satin nickel or black finishes that will
suit your style but also your pocket.
They supply only the most durable
craftsmanship that will provide
you with a door that will welcome
everyone who knocks on it for many
years to come.
Still worried you might be surprised
from the outside? Then come and see
BUCO’s wide range of kitchen and back
doors. Hinges, locks and barrel bolts
are exactly what are needed to make
Mariska Hen-Boisen
sure unwanted guests don’t get to the
heart of the home. The company supplies
stable doors with upper and lower leaves
that open separately, providing the
benefit of a window.
Now that you’re secure from the outside
world, let’s explore some indoor options.
For bathrooms, pantries and dining
rooms, barn doors are all the rage right
now. Excellent for saving space, barn
door rails give an almost boho look to
your home’s interior.
For bedrooms we supply embossed
doors made from pine, mixed timber or
fibreglass. Be sure to have these doors
treated with water-based sealer before
hanging. Also consider glass panel doors
as they transfer light throughout the
interior of your home and you can add
abrasive treatment for an even more
unique and personal feel.
But what is a door without a lock? Also
available in a wide selection from BUCO,
you will find the best advice about the
best lock for your needs. There’s twolever
for internal doors and three- or
four-lever for external doors. If you’re
still concerned about security, ask about
cylinder locks with unique keys. These
locks will add to the look and feel of
the home as they come in brushed
nickel, brass, antique brass and ultramodern
black.
The company also supplies ironmongery
products and accessories, and if you’d
like additional keys to any of your locks,
BUCO offers a key-cutting service.
So whether you want guests to feel like
they’re knocking on heaven’s door or you
have a red door and you want to paint it
black, BUCO Nelspruit will let you in on
its very best deals.

Looking to enhance your sporting performance, recover quicker,
sleep better and prevent injuries? Then you’ll be keen to learn more
about the Hyperice Hypervolt 2 percussion massage therapy gun
... the new must-have device to hit the local market. Whether you’re
a professional athlete, a weekend cycler, or hiker, you should warm
up quickly, stay loose, and accelerate recovery at home. But still, you
could (and often do) end up with tension and sore muscles. Which
is where percussion therapy comes in. But what, exactly, is it, and
how is it beneficial to people who live an active lifestyle? Simply
put, percussive therapy helps muscles recover faster while reducing
muscle pain, muscle fatigue and lactic acid build-up. A massager
gun uses the force of percussive therapy (also known as vibration
therapy) to manipulate your body’s soft tissue, and allows you to
focus on a certain muscle group or muscle knots for immediate pain
relief. Perfectly safe to use, it’s ideal for everyone from CrossFitters
and dancers to gym buffs, home-gymmers or people who just want
to push themselves. The Hypervolt 2 Pro, the strongest percussion
device available, boats a digital dial which delivers 5 speeds of
percussion; a pill shaped handle for better control and a more
comfortable hold and patented technology which showcases how
much pressure is being applied. You’ll find them at Takealot, Gear4U
and EveryShop for R7999.
