10 | haddonfield.today #109 • APRIL 1 TO 22, 2022Citizen of the Year 2022During the Mayor’s Breakfaston Saturday, March 19,Julie Beddingfieldwas named Haddonfield’sCitizen of the Year for 2022.After moving to Haddonfield in 2006, JulieBeddingfield put the knowledge and experienceshe gained as an environmental and land-uselawyer to use, for the benefit of our community,as a member (2009-16) and chair (2012-16) ofthe Haddonfield Environmental Commission. Avariety of new projects led to the formation ofSustainable Haddonfield, which Julie also served on (2010-18) and chaired (2010-16).She oversaw the work necessary to attain silver-level certification from SustainableJersey and receive a $10,000 grant to develop a Green Building and SustainabilityElement for Haddonfield’s Master Plan. Additional projects included a municipal energyaudit, the addition of bicycle lanes to a portion of Grove Street, and a multi-facetedwater conservation education campaign. In recognition of her work, Julie was namedSustainable Jersey’s first Sustainability Hero in 2014.Julie has been a member of the Haddonfield Civic Association’s board of governorssince 2012 and has served as the Association’s treasurer since 2016.As the owner of Inkwood Books since 2015, Julie has used her store and social mediapresence as a platform for a diversity of ideas and perspectives. The store supportsnumerous literacy initiatives in Haddonfield and throughout the region. During theearly days of the Covid-19 pandemic – the outbreak of which coincided with herdecision to move to larger premises – she inspired other Haddonfield business ownerswith her ability to pivot, adapt, and find creative solutions to the many challenges andobstacles that the pandemic placed before the owners of small businesses.The author of one of the letters submitted in support of Julie’s nomination wrote: “Inall of these ways and so many more, Julie truly embodies the best of Haddonfield. Sheunderstands that Haddonfield is a stronger community when we work together, listento each other and support those who need help. And her contributions to our town havemade it a more sustainable and more welcoming place to live.”MADELINE CASH receives theWilliam G. Hansen Youth of the YearAward for 2022.The president of the Leo Club at Memorial High School,Maddie has organized numerous activities to raise moneyand help people in the community, while providing volunteeropportunities for more than 300 Leos in the school.Sponsored by the Haddonfield Area Lions Club, the Mayor’s Breakfastis held annually in the Presbyterian Church’s Fellowship Hall.This year marked the 50th anniversary of the Citizen of the Year Award.Photo: Colette Oswald

The schedule includes:• Sat Apr 2 at 1 pm in Kings Court – Watch renowned local sculptor JohnGiannotti (who created “Haddy,” among many other pieces worldwide) createa polyurethane casting of “I Sing the Body Electric,” a 22-inch bust of poet WaltWhitman. Rain date: Sun Apr 3 at 1pm.• Mon Apr 4 to Fri Apr 15: “DIY Sculpture in a Box” – Kids age 5 and up canpick up a free bag of supplies at the Public Library to create their ownsculptures, in cooperation with the Markeim Arts Center. Then take a selfie andpost to social media by Fri Apr 29. No judging, no prizes, just fun!• Sat Apr 9 and Sat Apr 23 – Free, professionally-led walking tours leave at 12nfrom “Haddy,” the dinosaur sculpture in Haddy Lane on Kings Highway, led bysculptor John Giannotti. Rain dates the following days (Sun Apr 10 and 24).• All month – Kids can pick up a “Haddy Snack” of pennies to feed the dinosaurat Melange Children’s Boutique, 45 Kings Hwy E. While supplies last.• Self-guided tours with easy walking directions online at HaddonfieldSculpture.org, including the world’s only Children’s Sculpture Zoo at the corner of KingsHwy East and Evergreen Lane, with its life-size bronze sculptures of babyelephant “Ndotto,” Tumi the giraffe, and “Toad,” “Bunny Rabbit,” “Sea Lion.”• Join sculpture lovers in celebrating Sat Apr 30 as International SculptureDay.
