Last Man’s Dinner: April 5
On April 22, 1940, during a gathering to celebrate
the 21st anniversary of the formation of Haddonfield
American Legion Post 38, 108 veterans of the Great
War organized themselves into a Last Man’s Club.
They identified four purposes:
• To preserve our memories of 1917-18
• To pay fitting tribute to our departed comrades
• To foster and perpetuate good comradeship
• To eat drink and be merry.
The charter called for “a bottle of rare brandy ...
to remain unopened until our ranks have thinned to
the last three men,” at which time “the bottle shall
be opened and a toast offered to those comrades
who have gone before.”
The 81st Last Man’s Dinner will be held at the
Tavistock Country Club on Tue Apr 5, at 6pm
(social hour) and 7pm (dinner). All are welcome.
The event honors local veterans of all American
wars, in particular those who are members of the
various “Last Man” clubs established by Post 38 in
the wake of various conflicts.
Three members of the World War II Last Man’s
Club remain: Don Beck, John Brownwell, and Tom
Reilly.
Tickets are $50 and include valet parking. To
purchase tickets, call David Tarditi at 609-437-6347
or email drtarditi@verizon.net. (On the double!)
