It just makes sense tomemorialize those memories by changing the nameto one that is much more meaningful.”The origin on the name “Crows Woods” is not known. A spokesperson forthe Historical Society said it could have been named for an early residentwith the surname of Crow, “Or it’s possible that the area was once home toa large flock of warm-blooded black vertebrates constituting the class Aves /‘eIvi z/, characterized by feathers, toothless beaked jaws, the laying of hardshelledeggs, a high metabolic rate, a four-chambered heart, and a strong yetlightweight skeleton.”The name “Dawgs Woods,” the Alumni Society says, would bestow severalother benefits on the community. “First, the Borough would be able to repealthe ordinance banning off-leash dogs from the playing fields. You can’t verywell have a place called ‘Dawgs Woods’ and not allow both Dawgs and dogs toroam free,” she said. And secondly, the perimeter of the fields could be plantedwith dogwood trees. “They would look spectacular in the spring, just like thecherry trees on Chapel Avenue in Cherry Hill.”The Alumni Society believes that Dawgs Wood could become a huge touristattraction. “Instead of the dog days of summer, we could have ‘Dawg Days ofSpring,’ with dogwood trees in full bloom.” Whatever.Plan ‘B’ for cellphone tower HADDONFIELD – When plans to erect a 120-foottall cell-phone tower at the Borough’s Public Worksfacility on Centre Street became widely known, earlyin 2021, the reaction from neighbors was fast andfurious: “Not in our back yard!”More than 600 residents signed a petition, and itwasn’t long before the Borough scuttled the plan. The need for better cellphone reception inHaddonfield remains, however, without any obvioussolution at hand. Until ...In February, the Borough embarked on aninnovative Dead TREE (Tree Rapid Execution Event)Program that will see the partial removal of 150trees in just three months. “Partial” because thestumps will be left standing for subsequent removal by a contractor. At least, that was the plan. But then a student at Memorial High Schoolcontacted the Borough with a suggestion: Leave the tree stumps in place anduse them as mini cellphone towers. The feasibility of the suggestion was testedwith ten trial towers throughout the town. The results were impressive. Mostresidents in the vicinity of the “tree towers” reported an increase in the numberof bars on their phones from two to four, and in some cases from one to four.“We are excited about the potential of this plan to not only solve the problemof poor cellphone service in Haddonfield,” a cellular company spokespersonsaid, “but to boost reception to an unexpectedly high level all over town.”Some 200 “tree towers” will be required, to ensure that all residents receivethe same high level of connectivity. The Borough plans to manufacture and“plant” about 50 fake tree stumps to supplement the 150 real ones, and willpurchase an extra-large 3-D printer, so the work can be undertaken in-house.
