busy knitting andcrochetingitems to be sent to<br />
war ravaged Ukraine.<br />
The churchheld aspecialservice last<br />
weekendwhere all the itemswere on display<br />
andpeople were invited to touch anearby<br />
blanketand prayfor therecipient.<br />
The itemsinclude crochetrugs and blanket,<br />
knitted hats, scarfs andjumpersfor children<br />
andadults.<br />
Reverend Heather Stewartsaidthe project<br />
was part of theMission WithoutBorders,<br />
OperationCover Upinitiative.<br />
OperationCoverUpwas started in 2000 and<br />
sends twoshipping containersofwarm<br />
clothing, blankets, hygiene items and school<br />
supplies to those in need in Eastern Europe<br />
every year.<br />
Rev Stewart said the founder of Operation<br />
CoverUpwanted to give every orphan in<br />
countrieslike Romania, Moldova andUkraine<br />
ablanket to keep them warm.<br />
‘‘It had continued as gifts to families as<br />
orphanagesreduced... butwith the Ukraine<br />
situationthere will be many orphans again and<br />
they haveextremely cold bitter winters,’’ she<br />
said.<br />
Around adozen peoplefrom the <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />
Anglican parish made the woollycreations,<br />
withHakatere Presbyterianand local<br />
Methodists also contributing.<br />
Thechurch made over230knitted itemsand<br />
they will be senttoChristchurch to joinothers<br />
gatheredfrom all over Canterbury, before<br />
being shippedtoEastern Europe.<br />
RevStewartsaid the parish was satisfied<br />
andhappy with the results‘‘folk are already<br />
knitting for next year,itisagood winter<br />
occupation,’’ she said.<br />
It costs around$5per blanket to ship to<br />
Eastern Europe so donations are always<br />
welcome.<br />

Garden Bird Survey which<br />
beginslater this month.<br />
The survey is thecountry’s<br />
longest runningcitizen<br />
science projectand<br />
organised by Landcare<br />
Research.<br />
It takes place over nine<br />
daysbetween 25 <strong>June</strong>and 3<br />
Julythis year and those<br />
taking part areencouraged<br />
to count thebirds theysee in<br />
their back garden, at school<br />
or in the park.<br />
Lastyear more than 7000<br />
people took partnationwide.<br />
The survey askspeople to<br />
listenfor birds forone hour<br />
on oneofthe days andto<br />
recordfor each species the<br />
highest number seen or<br />
heardatone time.<br />

submitted to the NZ Garden<br />
BirdSurvey website<br />
(gardenbirdsurvey.nz).<br />

as an environmental<br />
indicator for the health of<br />
our ecosystems. The<br />
