Mothering Sunday
ReviewedbyRowena Hart
Based on a short exquisitely crafted novel by
Graham Swift, this movie is quiteawork of art.
True to modernism’s great subjects — sex and
death — “Mothering Sunday” centers on two
neighbouring couples who have lost boys in the
war.
It’s Mother’s DayinMarch 1924 where servantsget
time off to visit their mothers, and families take
time to celebrate their mothers.
We see one maid who was anorphan with no
family, biking off tohave atryst with the boy next
door.
He should be at his engagement party but
obviously is going tobelate, and the young girl is
abouttobedisappointed.
It is asad story but lifted upby the classy actors.
Colin Firth and Olivia Colman play one of the
couples, their maid is played byOdessa Young ,a
beautiful young actress. Inmany ofthe scenes she
was naked, Ithought they were quite beautiful.
Glenda Jackson plays her part too at the ripe old
age of 86.
Funding for track construction
TheMtSomersWalkwaysSociety has
received agrant of $10,000 from the
NewZealand Community Trust
(NZCT) for newtrack construction.
Funding coordinator Jack Allan
said following rockfalls on the
original Sharplin Falls Track during
and after the 2011earthquakes, the
DepartmentofConservation deemed
it prudent for safety concerns to close
thetrack.
After extensiveconsultationwith
DOC and eminent geologists,the
walkwayssociety had undertaken to
build anew one themselves.
‘‘In view of the fact thatanumber of
walkers are now regularly climbing
over the ‘closed track’ barrierit
illustrates the track's popularity and
that for apurely health and safety
perspectiveitisessential that the
trackisreinstated,” he said.
“The Mt Somers Walkways
members do fantastic work in the
area maintaining other DOC tracks
and weedcontrolinadjacent land.
Despite this,theyare prohibited
from working physically on this
project.
‘‘This grantwill enable significant
numbers of walkers thatusedthe
trackpreviously as well as new
visitors to the area to enjoy ashort
and accessible shortwalk suitable for
awiderange of peopleofall ages,
abilities, and demographicsfor free.
‘‘The trackhas also previously
proved to be agreat introduction for
new walkers to other longerwalksin
theregion.”
In 1983 Mt Somersand Staveley
locals formedthe Mt Somers
WalkwaysSociety,whichled to the
creation in 1987 of what is now known
as the Mt Somers Track.
The popular Sharplin Falls attraction appeals to many sightseers.
The track was officially opened in
1987when management was passed
to DOC.
Since then,aclose associationhas
been maintained betweenthe two
organisations.
The Walkways members also
maintain other tracks in the region,
undertake significantweed control
on the Mt SomersConservation lands,
and work countless voluntary hours
in difficult terrain to provide for a
convenient and safewalking
experience for thepublic.
