Petition for stockwater race
BY MICK JENSEN
Longbeach residentsSheryl and Hal
Stivens havepresentedapetition
with191 names to Ashburton
DistrictCouncilasking that a
sectionofstockwater raceremains
open.
In March councilapproved the
closure of the race, whichruns
through six propertiesinthe
Longbeach Road/Willowby area.
The other five propertyownershave
consented to its closure.
A280msectionofthe 1.5km race
runs throughthe Stivens lifestyle
property on Boundary Roadand is
used as an alternative water source.
Speaking at council lastweek Mrs
Stivens saidthe creek also provided
drainage thathelpedprevent
floodingonthe road.
Duringlast year’s heavyrain
event (May 31) waterhad been
carriedaway andout tosea and
flooding prevented becauseofthe
creek and extra channelsdug on her
property.
Mrs Stivens said thewater race
provided an essential ‘‘backup’’ on
herproperty andtherehad beena
reliableflowofwater until very
recently.
That recent unreliability was
downtoother landowners, shesaid.
Mrs Stivens said she had map
documentation that showed therace
was on the siteofahistoric
waterway,whichmeantitqualified
forprotectionunderthe country’s
INDIC
fresh water policy.
Shesaid the racewas also
important for local biodiversity.
MrsStivenssaidcentral
government policies werecoming in
that wantedtosavefragmentsof
biodiversity because industrial
farming and short term thinking had
diminished fresh water ecology.
The section of raceinquestion
runsfrom 272 to 344 Longbeach
Road.
Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown told
