On Thursday,19May,GeraldineLibrary
and Service Centre hosted childrens
author AnneKayes who was visiting the
area withtheStorylinesTrust.
The Storylines Trust aims to inspire
young New Zealandersand their whanau
to enjoythe magic of reading, especially
reading books created for them by New
Zealand writers and illustrators.
(storylines.org.nz) Trustee DrLibby
Limbrick, who was part of thevisit, says
thatalthough the trust is Auckland-based,
it organises visits to smallertowns across
the country.
Author Anne Kayes wrote the Tui Street
Tales and The Tui Street Heroes, two
collections of stories following the
adventuresofagroupofKiwi kids caught
up in slightlyfantasticaladventures, and
the more recent In Our OwnBackyard.
She says she finds that it is not only
about introducing children to reading
but also aboutthe craft of writing. Some
of thechildren Italktoask very insightful
questions about building astory so
it flows.
The lockdown experience provided
both the contextand thetheme for Annes
most recent story. Written for young
adults, In Our Own Backyard uses the
societal divisions experienced during
lockdowntoconnect back to thedivisions
of the 1981 Springbok tour. She says that
John Minto helped ensure the factual
accuracy ofthe story and that the
endorsementsonthe backcover include
apiece by Helen Clark.
Fans of the Tui Street series will be
pleased to know that athird book is in
process. More information about the
