Highland Dancers out of <strong>Ashburton</strong> braved<br />
Dunedin's brisk winter weather at the<br />
weekendalongside New Zealand’sreigning<br />
highland dancechampion, Angus Hendry.<br />

wereamong those competing at the Piping&<br />
Dancing Association of NewZealand Otago<br />
Centre 110th annual championships as<br />
temperatures dipped to single digits.<br />
‘‘Dancing is meant to becold though,’’ Mr<br />
Hendry, of Tauranga said.<br />
‘‘It comes from Scotlandand Ireland.’’<br />
The South Island, particularly the lower<br />
half, wasquite dominant in highland dancing<br />
and the levelofcompetition at theDunedin<br />
championships wasparticularly high because<br />
dancers often used the annual eventasa<br />
warmup fornationals, just six weeksaway, he<br />
said.<br />
Nevertheless, there was afamily vibe among<br />
the120 dancers competing at Otago Boys’ High<br />
School, because manyofthe top dancers grew<br />
up competing against one another.<br />
‘‘You knoweveryone because youall travel<br />
around to different competitions.<br />
‘‘Everyone I’m dancing withI’ve known for<br />
most of my life. Everyone getsalong well it’s<br />
very friendly.’’<br />
