Although Water Safety Awareness Week

took place a couple of months ago, it’s

still important during the summer months

to be aware of the danger of open water

swimming in remote locations with no

lifeguards present.

On page 43 Andy Dunham, Crew Manager at

Rochdale Fire Station, writes about the work

that some of the crews get up to in the area

and the fact that incidents in these remote

locations can cause a delay in the emergency

response.

There’s another fabulous walk from Geoff

Ogden, leader of the Milnrow Walk & Talk

Group, and designed for those who are keen

to take up walking to improve their health

and fitness whilst enjoying the beauty of the

surrounding countryside.

Reverend Janet Pitman writes about

St Thomas and St James after whom both

Churches in Newhey and Milnrow are named.

– These words mean many

things to many people, and this

is probably the most diverse

area of planning where I am

regularly asked to assist. The

baby boomers have undoubtedly

made asset wealth on property

and some may have inherited or generated wealth.

However, the questions they ask are “Will we run out of

money“ – “Can we pass our wealth to our offspring”.

Initially, simple planning such as Wills* and Lasting

Powers of Attorney, of which there are two – Health

place. Following that start point, it is a matter of

understanding what you are trying to achieve with

all that you have, and then create a bespoke plan

that is flexible to meet any changing circumstances

i.e. cover home fees whilst protecting the estate,

having access to capital and protecting the estate.

Inheritance tax you choose to pay if you don’t use all

of the opportunities to mitigate it. Allowances such

as nil rate bands, Resident Nil rate Bands and annual

exemptions which are sufficient for most people to

achieve their outcomes.

Where more complex situations arise, I will look

to include any number of the following: PETS over

7 years and structures such as Business relief**,

Trusts, Gifting, Loan Trusts, Discounted Gift

Trusts, Charitable donations, The Rysaffe Principle,

Protection, Tenants in Common, Pensions and annual

exemptions. Increasingly we see changes to Gifts

with reservation and Deprivation of assets legislation,

but with careful planning and flexible arrangements

you can have your cake and eat it ensuring that

taxation is not the largest inheritor of your estate,

but your family are.

So you know what to do – Just ASK!

I help individuals, business owners and

Directors make better financial decisions.

I can’t change the events that shape your future,

Water Safety Awareness Week

The week of 25th April – 1st May saw the

annual Water Safety Awareness Week

Campaign, undertaken with partners of

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue

Service (GMFRS).

Paul Ellison had been speaking to local firefighter

crew manager Andrew Dunham from Rochdale’s

White Watch about some of the work the crews

in the local area had been doing the last couple

of weeks. Water Safety Awareness week is a

campaign the National Fire Chiefs Council have

run for a number of years. This is to highlight the

dangers of open water swimming as there aren’t

any lifeguards and the locations are often so

remote, which can create a delay in emergency

service response to the incident as often it is

difficult for those phoning incidents in to try and

pinpoint the locality of the scene and access.

Andrew Dunham is part of a recently formed Water

Safety Partnership group that has been set up

with colleagues from Rochdale Council, The Royal

Life Saving Society, United Utilities, The Canal and

Rivers Trust Authority, Greater Manchester Police,

and the Local Education Authority. The aim of this

group is to educate people and make them aware

of the potential dangers of open water.

There are a few key locations in the local area

that people like to go to cool off, but in reality, they

are exposing themselves to significant risk and

danger, so this is something that Andrew and his

fellow firefighters are trying to address. Crews

from Rochdale have been putting up leaflets and

posters in remote areas with the What3Words

locations on and the QR code so that people can

download the app straight from the poster – this

is a free app that anyone can download which

allows you to pinpoint your exact location to

within 3 metres. What3Words is now used on

every front-line appliance in GMFRS and is used

daily for all manner of incidents from road traffic

collisions to wildfire incidents. Its accuracy is vital

in saving time responding to emergencies allowing

crews to go straight to a specific location rather

than searching for somewhere from often vague

descriptions.

Andy Dunham said, “18 months ago, it became

noticeable that the number of water incidents

crews were attending was increasing significantly.

The majority of these seemed to be in remote

areas away from main roads often not easily

accessible for fire appliances. After the recent

wide area floods across the county over the last

few years, GMFRS has issued its firefighters with

dry suits and personal floatation devices so that

if/when we enter the water to carry out a rescue,

then at least we have the correct protective

equipment and training so that our crews can

carry out their duties safely.

GMFRS policy is that when attending a water

incident, crews have to be part dressed in water

gear before they leave the station. They then

have to try and locate the incident and carry all

their rescue equipment to the scene. Time is of

the essence in these rescue situations so clarity

around locations when phoning for help is vital and

literally does help to save lives. If you can download

and use the What3Words app, should you ever

need to make an emergency call, responders

can use your What3Words location and pass

this on to the appliances attending to make for a

speedy response and quick resolution. If you see

the posters around Norden village or across the

Borough, try the link and help to save lives!”

Milnrow Library Walking Group

PARK AND WALK NO 5

BEAL VALLEY

Here in Milnrow and Newhey we are

so lucky to be surrounded by such lovely

countryside.

Now that summer has arrived what could be more

encouraging than to get outdoors for a refreshing

stimulating short distance walk, designed

especially for those who want to start regular

easy leisurely walks for health and fitness value.

This walk is less than 2 miles (3 km) long, it can

be muddy in places after wet weather, so wear

appropriate footwear.

THE ROUTE

We start from the Bridge Street Car Park opposite

to the Tim Bobbin Pub.

Here the River Beal flows beside the car park,

disappears under Bridge Street to re-emerge from

Milnrow Bridge by the side of old cottages, Nos

2, 4 and 6 Bridge Street, formerly the site of the

original Milnrow Chapel of 1537.

Go down Ashes Lane (signposted public footpath).

On the left is a deep valley, the course of the River

Beal where horses are often grazing on the steep

sided field.

The lane, with a vast array of wild flowers in it’s

verges, leads down to a wide gate prior to the

original Ashes Farmhouse, painted white, before

you on the right.

Here a Memorial of a WW1 Soldier stands in the

foreground and a WW1 Tank is in the small garden

adjacent to Lily Street. Proceed up Kiln Lane past

the Old Vicarage (now St James House) to

Ashes Lane.

Go left through the waymarker signed access gap,

and down the single width path, leading to open

fields on the right where deer can often be seen,

and the River Beal on your left.

Continue along the river bank path, this section

can be muddy and slippery, so take great

care. Look out for wild life, Grey Herons and

Kingfishers, along this stretch of the River, and a

large variety of flora, wild flowers and ferns adorn

the path and river bank. The path ends at a stone

arched bridge over the river.

Keep left along the fence perimeter and head for

the very tall tree in the distance. Pass through the

access gate and onto Halliwell Street (signposted

bridleway).

Continue along the street with the fields to the left

and Thistlefield housing complex right, along a 3/4

mile section that becomes a tree lined lane, then

re-emerges back into Halliwell Street, to the Tim

Bobbin Pub and starting point.

Turn left over the bridge, then immediately first left

up a single width field path which brings you up to

an opening in the fence (and onto Firgrove Playing

fields.

important activities to do to improve your

lifestyle, well being, and stay healthy both

physically and mentally.

We meet at Milnrow Library every Monday

morning from 9.30 am leaving out at 10am

on separate walks around the Milnrow and

Newhey countryside. Our walks are free and

friendly, designed for people of all abilities,

and offer walking in safe and social groups

led by Volunteer Walk Leaders.

New walkers are welcome, as are children

accompanied by a responsible adult.

Update from St Thomas’, Newhey

and St James’, Milnrow

July is a good month for our parish churches here in

Milnrow and Newhey because in July we celebrate

our patron saints. I thought this month I would tell

you a little bit about the people our churches are

named after.

The patron saint of Newhey Parish Church, St Thomas, was

one of the twelve apostles, the closest followers of Jesus,

the ones he eventually called his friends. He acquired the

nickname ‘Doubting Thomas’ after the resurrection because

he was not present when the risen Jesus first appeared to the

disciples and was unconvinced until he met him in person.

He is mentioned by name in John’s gospel several times and

he seems to have been a man who was not afraid to speak up if he didn’t understand.

Thomas is believed to have travelled to India to spread the good news of Jesus to the people

there, he is also reported to have been to China and Indonesia. He was killed with a spear in

Chennai in Southern India in 72AD.

The patron saint of Milnrow Parish Church is St James the Apostle, sometimes known as James

the Greater because there were two apostles called James and he was the elder. James was

one of the fishermen Jesus called, he and his brother John worked in partnership with Simon

Peter and Andrew. When Jesus called them to follow him, they left the boat with their father

(Zebedee) and followed. James and John were known as ‘Sons of Thunder’ because of their fiery

tempers but they were also two of Jesus’ closest friends. James was the first of the apostles to be

martyred, killed in Jerusalem by the sword in 44AD on the instruction of Herod Agrippa.

James is the patron saint of Spain and one of the most famous walks of pilgrimage is that to his

grave at Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. In 2018, there were 327,378 pilgrims who claimed

the certificate declaring that they had completed the official pilgrimage, 62 miles on foot or 120

miles by bike. Happily, you do not have to walk or cycle that far to come to our St James’ church.

The present building was opened on St James day 153 years ago. In times past the church would

hold a service in the churchyard on the closest Sunday, carrying the harmonium out with them

to accompany the singing!

Patron saints are interesting because they are good examples of what the people who chose

them wanted their faith to be like. Whether you are more in tune with the passionate belief of

James or the questioning, truth-seeking of Thomas or some other favourite saint or role-model,

I encourage you to reflect on the way you express your faith (if you have one) or your personal

ethos. You never know who may be influenced by your example.

WI RECIPE

Summer Ratatouille

This month’s offering

is a Summer Ratatouille,

it’s really easy, all in 1 pot

and tasty too!

INGREDIENTS

Serves 5-6

2 courgettes

1 large aubergine

1 large red onion

100g black olives

2 large red bell peppers

1 large green pepper

3 tomatoes

200g Greek feta

Handful rosemary and thyme

2 tbsp balsamic vinegar

2 tbsp basil olive oil

Salt and pepper

METHOD

1. Preheat your oven to 190C/375F or gas mark 5

2. Chop all the vegetables, olives and tomatoes

and place into a baking dish with the vinegar,

oil, salt and pepper

3. Cube over the feta and sprinkle the herbs. Bake

for 30 minutes until the feta has melted and the

vegetables are tender

4. Serve with a fresh, crisp side salad and a warm,

freshly baked baguette

Club. Our guest speaker will be giving us an insight on life as an officer

at Style Prison.

MaD WI. Recent events include 10 pin bowling, a trip to Putstars, theatre visits, wine

tasting, local walks and cocktail making.

LEO SOLOMON & THE ROCHDALE ART SCHOOL

Towns in this country have never

had Schools of Music or Schools of

Architecture but Schools of Art became

an important part of the civic landscape

from the 19th century in the United

Kingdom.

Many evolved from the Mechanics

Institutes, offering social mobility

or recreational education for a wide

population. They were opened at the

same time and in many cases alongside

museums and libraries and this remained

the case until the late 1980’s, 157 of them

in 1959 dedicated to the teaching and

learning of art and design. And this was

the case in all regions. Many Lancashire

and Yorkshire towns had its own school

of art, and these catered for those not

only going into art and design careers but

others with interests in music and poetry.

From the 1980’s though, art schools

were merged between towns or became

part of polytechnics and then university

departments, the majority closing their

doors on many fine buildings.

And one of these fine buildings was

the Rochdale School of Art. It shared

its space with the building of the old

Rochdale Technical School which opened

in 1893 between Nelson Street and Fleece

Street now occupied by a car park. The

building was extended to include the

School of Art in 1906. The area was

locally known as The Gank and its

development improved that part of town,

built as it was with red Accrington bricks

and with many fine features including

stained glass interior windows and

On steep slopes, the whole building had

numerous entrances on Nelson Street,

King Street, and Church Lane.

The first head of the School of Art was

Henry Barrett Carpenter whose book on

colour theory informed the curriculum,

but its heyday was after the second

world war when the country was looking

to rebuild in manufacture and the arts.

The School of Art offered weekend noncertificated

courses as well as foundation

and A level classes in conjunction with

Rochdale College but more than that,

the place caught the zeitgeist of the

1960’s with a vitality and productive

excitement around the place, camaraderie

between students and staff and a sense

of openness and creativity. The building

was a rabbit warren of rooms crammed

with work underway, the corridors like

exhibition spaces covering a wide range

of arts – film, textiles, photography,

sculpture, and fine arts – all represented

across the syllabus with music and poetry

also a part of the experience.

The staff at the School of Art was drawn

from far afield but there were a number

of local artists who also taught there.

Apart from the Rochdale Sculptors

which included Walter Kershaw, Peter

Wolstenholme, and Tony Smart, some

who worked or studied at the Rochdale

School of Art went on to national

and international careers such as the

photographer Elaine Constantine, the

artists Julian Smith and Jack Crabtree,

artist and fashion designer Stuart

McKenzie and art writer and curator

Much of the prominence of the Rochdale

School of Art as a local creative force

and one that lasted for decades, can

be traced back to 1953 when Leopold

Solomon was appointed as Principal. He

took what he had learned as master-incharge

of the Barrow School of Art and

from a low point helped the Rochdale

school flourish, growing it from just eight

enrolled students to 190 full-time and

550 part-time students in a decade, with

twenty-six staff teaching a multitude of

art techniques from painting, sculpture

and drawing to lithography, typography

and silversmithing. Solomon knew Dylan

Thomas from his time in Wales and

became a good friend of L S Lowry, using

his friendship to have Lowry give advice

to the students in Rochdale. But he was

more than that.

but was a notable painter and sculptor

in his own right, casting a bronze bust

of L S Lowry and exhibiting nationally,

being selected for the prestigious Royal

Academy exhibition in the summer

of 1967. Rochdale School of Art, with

Solomon’s lead, established one of the

largest foundation courses outside the

then polytechnics and attracted students

from across the country, Leo Solomon

remaining principal of the college until

his death at the age of 56 in 1976.

The Rochdale School of Art however

met with a sad ending. A fire swept

through part of the building in March

1969, and much was lost although parts

were re-built, and the teaching continued

although later transferred to Rochdale

College. The original building closed in

1989 and was subsequently demolished,

making way for a car park. A terracotta

frieze, depicting spinning and metal

working was preserved and is now

displayed above the car park where once

stood an important part of the cultural

history of the town.

He was an effective and approachable

manager, writing “It is no use being

a demagogue in an ivory tower when

you are dealing with young, intelligent

people whose future is in your hands.”

During his time in charge, he was able

to balance management and his links

with the town’s Education Committee

with creativity, and he not only raised

the status and climate of the institution

A Fundraising Event in

Memory of John Edward Smith

On Saturday 28th May a fundraising event was held at the

Cedar Tree in Newhey for the Brain Tumour Research Fund.

Thanks to everyone who helped and supported this very

worthy cause with gifts and donations, in total a whopping

£3150 was raised. There were cakes and coffee, a bottle

tombola, a mystery tombola, craft, and jewellery stalls as

well as a Grand Raffle.

The event was not only to raise money but awareness of this

dreadful disease which receives so little support from the larger

cancer support funds. The money was raised in memory of

John Edward Smith who recently died of this illness. We hope

that the money we raised will make a difference!

Finally thank you to everyone who came and supported us on the day.

Without your support we would never have reach the amount we did. Not only did we feel

gratified by the huge amount of money we raised but also the fact that this event brought

a small community back together to celebrate after the past couple of years.
